April 14, 7:30 p.m., Highland Park High School by Eric Molho, Corps Director It only happens once a year! Individually, each of the Minnesota Brass ensembles has a full calendar of performances to entertain fans. The evening will begin with a fun and lively performance by the Swarm Band! This exciting, high energy ensemble has entertained fans of the Minnesota Swarm (a professional lacrosse team based in Saint Paul) since January, During this, their debut season, the Swarm Band performed in front of crowds of over 8,000 people in the Xcel Center at each of the Swarm s home games. Next up, Minne-Brass will debut selections for their 2010 production: Animated Adventures in Brass II: The TV Show. This musical trip revisits the hit cartoons of the 1960s, featuring music from the Jetsons, Dick Tracy, and Spider-Man, plus a host of other special surprises. If you can recall the time-honored ritual of Saturday morning cartoons, you ll love this year s edition of Minne- Brass. The music is driving, the antics are zany, and the attention span is short. 2 Member Spotlight: Nick and Heather Moreno By Susan Fisher The member spotlight shines on Nick and Heather Moreno a very special young couple who contribute to the success of Minnesota Brass season after season! If you have been around the corps for any length of time, you would think that Nick and Heather spend all of their time devoted to Brass activities. While they do devote many hours to the corps, each is a busy professional as well - Nick as a Communications Project Specialist for Home Federal Bank and Heather as an art teacher at Cottage Grove Middle School. Nick and Heather carry on the traditions of the Moreno family tree with deep roots in drum corps and Minnesota Brass legacy. returned to Minnesota Brass after his junior corps experience and has been Joel Matuzak s right hand man over the last decade both with Brass and as assistant director of the Vikings Skol percussion line. In addition to instructing the MBI battery, Nick also serves as director for Minnesota Brass Indoors, the corps winter drumline, and teaches the percussion sections at Park Center and Woodbury High Schools. If that is not enough, Nick also has been a member of the Minnesota Brass Board of Directors for the last two years. Nick and Heather first got acquainted in July, 2001, during the corps participation in Fourth of July parades and the Drumcorps Midwest Championships, in DeKalb, Illinois. Their relationship flourished over the years and they were married in April, While Heather did not grow up with the corps, she also has Brass family connections. Her brother, Mike Amundsen played the baritone and euphonium during the early years of the last decade and worked on the visual staff in Nick has been a member of the Brass family from his very earliest days. From 1984 through 1987, Nick s dad, Matty Moreno, was the Corps Director. Additionally, the corps has been peppered with many talented musicians and supporters from Nick s family over the last thirty years. His mom, Beth Jeager Kantola helped out on the support staff; his brother Matt Moreno was a bass drummer; his uncle Mike Lee was a soprano player and his aunts Ruth Ann and Jackie Moreno performed with the colorguard. More recently, Nick s aunt Bea Erskine Jeagar was a featured mellophone player and a horn instructor, and his uncle Sam Jeagar was a baritone player during many seasons in the 1980s and 1990s. Both are currently members of Minne-Brass. The Jeager name may sound very familiar to current marching members since their son Joe is currently a snare player in the percussion section of the full corps and also the winter drumline. Long-time supporters of the corps recall the many years that Nick s cousin, Joe, was watching Nick and other fabulous drummers from the sidelines. During rehearsal breaks, Nick always had a sweet spot for the budding young drummer on the sideline, helping and encouraging him and others to develop their talents. Nick and Heather epitomize the spirit of the Minnesota Brass family and generously share their endless energy and notable talents. Heather has been active with the corps in the colorguard section since 2001, both as a performer and an instructor of the full corps and the Winter Guard squad. Heather also gained valuable junior corps experience during the last decade by performing with the Carolina Crown colorguard. She serves as a board member of the Northstar Guard Circuit and also instructs the Woodbury High School colorguard. What inspires Nick and Heather to spend so much time and energy for Minnesota Brass? They say that they want to help propel the corps into the next chapter of its history by passing along the wonderful experiences and education they have received in drum corps over the years. Since 1995, Nick has play just about every percussion instrument possible with Minnesota Brass including bass, tenor, and snare drum. He was section leader in 1999 and Nick also spent a year with Santa Clara Vanguard and was part of the Santa Clara high percussion drumline at the DCI World Championships. Nick Heather and Nick Moreno in 2009 Reach out to 2000 MBI friends and fans With this issue, Quarter Notes has started accepting advertisements from MBI alums and friends. These advertisements provide an opportunity to connect with nearly 2000 friends and fans of the corps. They also help offset some of the cost involved in printing and mailing Quarter Notes. If you are interested in advertising in Quarter Notes, send an to Qnotes@mnbrassinc.org. How Important is MBI to YOU? Has Minnesota Brass positively affected your life? Your education? Your family? How about your musical career? Quarternotes would like to hear your stories. If you re willing to share, please send an to quarternotes@mnbrassinc.org. 2

3 Changes to Sideliners will involve more alumni and fans by Paul Mordorski A core group of Minnesota Brass alumni and supporters have been meeting this winter to start the process of reorganizing the corps support organization, Sideliners. Sideliners will promote fellowship and corps related activities to help strencthen Minnesota Brass. Ten individuals, including former MBI Board members, Brassy Award winners, recruiters, promoters, and some who truly are on the sidelines have had three meetings to discuss what type of direction Sideliners should have in the future. The core group agreed that Sideliners should continue to promote alumni- and fan-related activities to support Minnesota Brass, Inc. This may include: producing the Sideliners newsletter concurrently with Quarter Notes, recruiting alumni and fans to directly participate in corps general operations, promoting various fund raising and social events, and continuing to take an active role in promoting MBI s sponsored show, Sounds of Minnesota, scheduled for August 22 (see page 5 for details). Sideliners will appoint officers to meet on a regular basis to plan events, activities, and involvement with MBI. Officer positions that will be announced at the first annual social event meeting, scheduled for April will be: Chairperson(s) Treasurer Secretary Communications Director Membership Coordinator Historian General Officers The Sideliners core group voted to meet every third Wednesday of the month at the MBI outdoor rehearsal site near Industrial Boulevard in NE Minneapolis: May 19, June 16, July 21, which will feature the Northstar Ford Galaxie Classic Car Club, and August 18. Sideliners will publicize their annual social event as soon as a date and location is confirmed. If you have interest in being involved in committee meetings or the annual event, contact Paul Skinny Mordorski (skinnypaulm@yahoo.com or ) or Sherry Duggan (sherryduggan@juno.com or ). Sideliners core group is committed to finding ways to help alumni and fans feel more a part of the corps after they are no longer active marching members.
