1 FROM HASA PRESIDENT: NEWSLETTER October 2013 I do want to thank all the HASA officers and members who set up and prepared food for our September party. The southern style barbecue chicken, potato salad, banana pudding, all the food prepared by volunteers Mike & Jean Hale was superb. Thank you all that work is appreciated, and a big shout out to all those members and guests who brought complimentary dishes & desserts. The Harnett Area Shag Association party will be on Friday, October This is special party with the band NORTHTOWER and DJ Butch Halpin. We will have pork barbecue cooked by volunteer Ashley Holland!!! Also, slaw and baked beans. Please bring your favorite appetizer, salad or fruit dessert to compliment this barbecue menu. Free line dancing & shag lessons at 7:00; food served at 7:30 p.m. The admission is $15.00 each for Oct 11 th that includes entertainment and barbecue, and lots of fun. Music, dancing, entertainment, food a very nice night out on the town for only a small amount of money. Where can you go for $15.00 and receive the same entertainment value? Raffles to include the following: 1) $ /50 HASA Raffle- Drawing is held the night of HASA party. See Joe McCorquodale for ticket 2) $1.00 HASA Blanket Raffle Ticket. Purchase ticket to enter drawing to win HASA #1 customized blanket - one of a kind. 250 tickets will need to be sold so we can have raffle the blanket. Go to admissions desk to purchase your ticket. I know it appears that we have a lot of raffles. The raffles help someone to win a prize but these raffles also assist us in donating money to charities at the end of the year. In 2012 HASA was able to donate $3, to charities from memberships, member & guest attendance and raffles.
2 During SOS, on September 19 th, HASA sponsored a pre-sos party along with Twin Rivers, Atlantic Beach, ENCSC, Sugarfoot, and Cauesweay clubs a private SOS party at Pirate s Cove, Ocean Drive, SC. There were free pitchers and appetizers. Overall with the combined clubs, we had approximately 150 in attendance. The dance floor was full with DJs Chuck Clodfelter and Robbie Leggett playing everyone s favorite music. This was free to our HASA members and guests! Ken Aiken, ACSC Chairman, ACSC VP Robin Morley, and SOS Board Chairperson Helen also attended the party and met quite a few of the members. HASA sold 100+ Fun Monday tickets. Unfortunately, no one from our club won the big pot, but the positive is after all the bills were paid for Fun Monday there are proceeds donated to Caring For Kids. Both Fun Sunday & Fun Monday are funded solely by sales of Fun Monday raffle tickets. There was surprise visit from singer, Eddie Floyd who provided excellent entertainment with the Craig Woolard band. Ann & I visited all the clubs and saw The Band of Oz, Jim Quick, Craig Woolard, Smoking Hot, Carolina Breakers + more entertain. A great week! We met new, interesting people from out of state and saw old friends. We met some people from the Cincinnati Bop Club now that might be an interesting place to visit. They do a lot of the Swing and Shag. On October 17, 2013, the NC Music Hall of Fame, Kannapolis, NC will have their annual induction ceremony. This is the event where only North Carolina based entertainers are inducted and given a place in the NC Music Hall of Fame museum. I submitted Willie Weeks name for consideration over one year ago to the NC Music Hall of Fame. It took a few weeks/months, to do the research and gather the information for the needed nomination criteria. Willie is a bass player, originally from Salemburg, NC. Proud to say, Willie will be inducted at this ceremony. We had the problem of locating Willie since he was on the road so much with Eric Clapton, it was difficult to make contact to let him know he was inducted! With the assistance of Dr. Steve Proctor and Mr. Eddie Ray, curator of NC Musuem Hall of Fame the contact was made. Willie has played guitar for the past five years with Eric Clapton and has just completed a CD with Boz Scaggs. You can go on line to NC Music Hall of Fame to see new and past inductees and history of the museum. There are NC artists in the museum such as Charlie Daniels, Andy Griffin, Ronnie Milsap, Roberta Flack, James Taylor, Maceo Parker, General Johnson, Billy Scott and many others. A nice trip to visit the museum and see our NC history in
3 entertainment. I think there are still some tickets available for the ceremony if you are interested in attending the ceremony. We need sponsors for the planned Shag-O-Ween party to be held Saturday, Oct 26 th at the Dunn Shrine Building. This party is a joint effort of HASA, Sugarfoot & Johnston County Area shag clubs. HASA has $ from sponsors to date. HASA needs $ from sponsors We are $ short. You can sponsor $50.00 on up personal or business and your name will be displayed on and Facebook announcement of the event.
