PLEASE REMEMBER TO ASK NEW MEMBERS AND RED-DOT BEGINNER DANCERS TO DANCE. ALL IT TAKES IS PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE TO BE A BETTER DANCER! IT S ONLY THREE MINUTES We all love to dance or we wouldn't be going to a dance event. So if someone you don't know comes up and asks you to dance, say YES. We all dance at different levels. Those less experienced need to dance with the more experienced or they will never get better. So if you re asked, say YES. Or better yet ASK someone you don't know to dance, it will probably make their day! Want to know a Classic secret? Well not really a secret but a benefit for those who purchased a Classic ticket this year. The Dance Committee plans to provide a special free workshop to review the steps that Holly & Jason teach at the Classic! Workshop scheduled August 22 at Fast Eddie s.
4 Born into a dancing family in Eastern North Carolina, Holly was exposed to dance at a very young age. Her parents have been shag dancing since the early days of the dance and were inducted into the Myrtle and Atlantic Beach Shag Hall of Fames. Holly studied jazz, tap, & ballet from the age of three until graduating from high school. She furthered her dance studies by majoring in dance at East Carolina University where she was a member of the East Carolina Dance Association. Holly continues to dance competitively and travel the country teaching - she has recently performed at the Palace Theatre, USA Grand Nationals, and even on "Good Morning America." HOLLY CAGLE Holly brings to the classroom 25 years of dance experience and 15 years of instructional experience at various studios in the Carolinas. She has choreographed award-winning routines for several Little Miss North Carolina & Little Miss Mecklenburg County winners and countless dance competition teams including the East Carolina Dance Association Team. In addition to her awardwinning lyrical, hip-hop, and tap choreography, Holly is a member of the National Shag Dance Team and 2007 National Shag Dance Champion in the NonPro Division. SHAGGING WITH THE STARS Capital Shag Classic Instructors JASON CAGLE Jason grew up nearby in Concord, NC where he attended NW Cabarrus High School. He began shag dancing at an early age and danced in various shag competitions throughout high school. Jason graduated from NW Cabarrus High school in 1994 and migrated north to attend Harvard University. He continued dancing at Harvard where he introduced shag to many New Englanders through the "Southern New England Shag Club." Graduating Cum Laude from Harvard in 1998, he returned to Charlotte and continued his hobby of dance as the Sunday night shag instructor at Boppers from in conjunction with Susan Pate Funderburk. He and Holly won the 2007 National Shag Dance Champions in the NonPro division and now compete in the Pro division of the CSA/SPA shag dance circuit as well as are members of the National Shag Dance Team. In 2009, Jason was inducted into the "Keeper of the Dance" an annual award granted by the Shaggers Hall of Fame to one male and female who were former Junior Shaggers and continue to promote the dance. Jason is on the board of the National Shag Dance Championships, the Shag Hall of Fame Foundation, and The Ellen Taylor Foundation for Junior Shaggers. NVSC is honored and privileged to have these two amazing dancers and champions as our guest instructors for the weekend. PLEASE GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO HOLLY AND JASON!

6 TOOTIE BROWN I first heard the style of music that we dance to at the Ocean Plaza in Carolina Beach, NC while on vacation in July The Ocean Plaza was a dance hall located on the second floor with what seemed to be the longest stairs in the world. Being only seven years old and having no guts, I didn t go up, but I hung around on the sidewalk out front and listened to my heart s content. There had to be some young shaggers up there having a ball. Six years later, I learned to shag at the O. D. Pavilion to the jukebox. I began my DJ career in 85 in Statesville, NC, at the Landmark Italian American Restaurant (we nicknamed it the LIAR s Club). As a member of the Association of Carolina Beach & Shag Club DJ s, I have DJ ed all over the two Carolinas and from Baltimore to Sebring, FL, and from North Myrtle Beach to Memphis. I was inducted into the Association of Carolina Beach & Shag Club D J Hall Of Fame in March My wife and I are members of The Sand Flea Living Legend Association and The National Living Legends of Dance. We have been married for 42 years. I m really looking forward to the Capital Shag Classic. Shag-a-Thon News Congratulations to our Shag-a-Thon dancers and to all our members, family and friends who supported them. On May 5, Northern Virginia Shag Club presented Capital Hospice checks representing $9,525. Jacqueline Hawkins and Caroline Kuo from Hospice joined us for the presentation. When we combine this year s donation with past years, we have contributed a total of $190,000 to Capital Hospice. Northern Virginia Shag Club rocks! REMINDER GET YOUR CLASSIC TICKETS NOW!! Time passes quickly. Take advantage of the $85 ticket price before JUNE 30 th. Your registration and ticket money can be mailed to NVSC, P.O. They will have many popular styles of dance shoes to choose from and they will be bringing many of them to the event. Unfortunately, they cannot bring all styles and all sizes. Be sure to let them know you are from Northern Virginia Shag Club and will be attending the CLASSIC. They will be happy to accommodate your request with no obligation to buy. Happy shopping!! DONATE ITEMS FOR THE CLASSIC It s re-gifting time. Do you have something really nice that you don t use or need? No problem, donate it to the Silent Auction or for Door Prizes at the CLASSIC. It s fun! What makes it fun is giving and seeing someone enjoy what you have donated. It also helps our Club. See Robbi or Gary Mann on Wednesday nights at Rene s.
