4 DEAR NORTHERN VIRGINIA SHAG CLUB MEMBERS What one thing does our club need to keep dancing in the DC area? Well other than us shaggers, why a dance venue, of course. As part of our efforts to make our dance venue more enjoyable and available, members of the Board met recently with Rene s owner, John, to explore ways to make the dancing experience more enjoyable. We expressed the need to have the floor in better shape for dancing and John stated that his revenues are way down for Wednesday such that he can barely afford to open his doors on Wednesday night. We discussed reasons for the drop in revenue, some of which we have no control but others for which we felt that the club and Rene s could work together for our mutual benefit. One area that once was a source of revenue for Rene s on Wednesday night was food. Hardly any shaggers have been dining at Rene s for quite some time. John admitted that the food offerings had not been too appealing to us but he informed us that he had hired a new cook who can prepare foods that we should find to our liking. John has invited the Club to make recommendations for a value-priced menu ($6.95- $7.95 range) that he will make especially available for us on Wednesday night. So now is your chance to let us know your culinary preferences. We will tally up the responses and give Rene s the top three-four ideas and John will make them available within reason. (For these prices, whole Maine lobster and chateaubriand will be nigh out of reach!) Send your recommendations to Tim Farris (tfarris11@yahoo.com) by April 15th. John also said he would keep a better eye on the dance floor and apologized for letting it get into too bad a shape. He also said he would like to plan a welcome back meal at Rene s expense some time soon with the new menu items being showcased. We know that for some of our members, these times are tough but we also know that there are no free lunches so we do encourage our members to support the ongoing ability to have our club dances on Wednesday night by helping to support our venue at Rene s. Thank you in advance for responding and keep on shagging! Your NVSC Board HEY SHAGGERS HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE YOUR IDEAS AND HELP WITH OUR BIG WEEKEND PARTY - COME JOIN US FOR LUNCH WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR IDEAS! SUNDAY BRUNCH, 12:30 PM April 11, 2010 JW & FRIENDS, 6531 Backlick Rd., Springfield, Va HELP US PLAN THE CLASSIC EVERYONE WELCOME!! We need your ideas!! Great Brunch Menu & Reasonable Prices Reservations aren t required, but JW s would like a general headcount. So please contact Sue Young at suey@theaeap.com or see her at Rene s. See directions to JW s on the following page.
5 DIRECTIONS TO JW S NOTE: Mapquest isn t always right for central Springfield. Directions below. From the Beltway, or from I-395 inside the Beltway. Take the Springfield exit and stay to right on this long exit ramp. At end of exit, take immediate right on to Brandon. Take next left on to Bland. At 2 nd light, turn left on to Amherst and go up & across the bridge. At bottom of bridge (traffic light), take immediate left on to Springfield. Street dead-ends into Backlick Rd. (You can see JW s, slight diagonal across the street). Turn right on to Backlick and then turn immediate left into JW s parking lot. From the west and I-66, avoid the Beltway and take Fairfax Parkway (east/south) Fairfax Parkway eventually will turn into Springfield/Franconia Parkway. You will follow parkway almost as far as going to Springfield Mall. You ll be about 1.5 or 2 miles short of Mall when you need to exit Parkway. Take the Backlick Rd exit. At end of exit ramp, turn left on to Backlick. At the split, bear right and keep going straight. Look for Five Guys on your right. JW s is the next building. Turn right into JW s parking lot. Coming north on I-95, from Lorton area. Just past Newington, take the Backlick Rd north exit. This is a confusing exit. Have faith and just follow the arrows that say Backlick Rd. north. After a few miles on Backlick, stay in right lane and keep going straight at the split. Look for Five Guys on your right. JW s is the next building. Turn right into JW s parking lot. SHAG-A-THON CHUCKLE Before the start of the Shag-A-Thon, I was talking to a young lady (late 20's) at the Information Desk next to Center Court. In the course of obtaining information from her about the bathroom locations, etc. I explained the purpose of the Shag-A-Thon and the club's sponsorship. So she naturally asked me what was the shag dance. I always try and make my answer simple to this often asked question, "it is a variation of the well known jitterbug or swing from the ole rock 'n roll days." She then looked at me puzzled and said, "I know the jitterbug, it's the simple to use cell phone." After a constrained chuckle from me, I replied, "not exactly." "The jitterbug I am referring to is a dance originating from the lindy hop in the 1930s" and so forth. "Take a look at our dancing when we start and you'll get the picture." Then I said, "maybe your parents might have heard about it." But, then she said her parents were born in so who knows....barry Newman
