3 How I Discovered NVSC Mike Polites and Peggy Bree grew up in the 50 s listening to R&B music on the radio: Mike in St. Louis and Peggy in Baltimore. Around 1980, Mike became interested in ballroom dancing and took lessons; his favorite dance was the jitterbug. His introduction to shag dancing was in Tuscaloosa, AL, where he taught aerospace engineering at The University of Alabama. He joined the local shag group that was called the T-Town Shaggers. After he moved to Reston, VA in 2004 to teach at the University of Maryland and work for the Orbital Sciences Corporation in Sterling, VA, Sharon Geyer invited him to join the NVSC at Rene s. Several years later, Mike and Peggy met and began ballroom dancing together. Peggy lived in Annapolis at the time. She took an early retirement after starting a successful computer training company. Before that, she held key senior management positions at Gould Electronics and Digital Equipment Corporation. Last fall, their good friends, Mo and Pat, suggested they come to the Elks on Wednesdays to shag. After their first visit, they were hooked and came regularly. In December 2013, they took a week s vacation in Myrtle Beach, the birthplace of shag. They liked to dance at Fat Harold s and Ducks and enjoyed the ocean and beach so much that Mike bought a condo at the Beach Cove Resort while they were there. This April, they returned to Myrtle Beach for the spring SOS and had a blast. Why do they like to shag so much? Shag complements their jitter-bug dancing. They like to jitterbug to fast songs and shag to slower ones. They also love the R&B music that they hear when they shag; it is the music they grew up with. Why do they like the NVSC and coming to the Wednesday lessons and dances at the Elks? There are a lot of reasons. The price of admission is reasonable. The dinners served by the Elks are well prepared and fairly priced. Dinner at the Elks is a nice way to start the evening. The shag instructors are excellent and the lessons July Birthdays Lester Dumont 7/1 Kay Worley 7/2 Sandra Ferony 7/3 Andrew (Drew) Griffin 7/8 Dale Hern 7/8 Larry Boyer 7/10 Betty Robey 7/14 Patricia Cote 7/15 Jean Whitman 7/15 Paul Young 7/17 Mary Camp 7/18 Sheila Gant 7/22 Jerry Crews 7/26 Jenni Sammis 7/26 Peggy Bree 7/28 Jo Mozingo 7/28 Vesta Denning 7/29 Vaughn Royal 7/29 Gary Salpini 7/29 Juanita Freeberger 7/30 are very good. There is a lot of room to dance. Most important, the people who come on Wednesdays are great. It is predominantly an over 50 s group with a number of baby boomers; Mike and Peggy fit in well. 6 About Sam and Lisa Sam West Born: July 14, 1972 Sam started shag dancing at age 9 after his mother, Barbara, became interested in dancing. During his school years Sam also enjoyed soccer, baseball and basketball. As a junior shagger, Sam danced with several partners including Terri Alberty, who he won two junior national titles with. Terri's father, Shad, who many consider one of the best shag dancers ever, worked with Sam and was the biggest influence on Sam's dancing career. In 1994 Sam and partner, Melissa Calabrese, won the Non-Pro National title on their way to becoming the Overall National Shag Champions. Then in 1995 Sam partnered up with his sister, Sarah, and they went on to capture 8 Professional Division titles and 4 Overall titles. Sam also won the Pro and Overall Shag titles in 2001 with Jackie McGee, again in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with Jessica McAlhany, and most recently in 2010 and 2011 with Leslie Jennings. Sam is a 6-time champion of the Carolina Shag Division at the USA Grand National Dance Championships and a 3 time US Open Shag Champion. Three times at the Grand Nationals Sam has been named Entertainer of the Weekend, first for his portrayal of super spy Austin Powers, second for a Country/Swing number with his very pregnant wife to Two of a Kind Working on a Full House, and thirdly for just being Sam. He has also been a member, captain and choreographer for the National Shag Dance Championship Dance Team. In November of 2010 Sam and Lisa won their first big title together when they were named the winners of the Sophisticated Swing Division at the US Open Swing Dance Championships. They performed a memorable and creative number to Gene Kelly's Singing in the Rain. Sam has made several appearances on national and local TV and was a featured dancer in the movie Shag and in Alabama's Shaggin' on the Boulevard music video. In 1999 he and his sister, Sarah, were the first inductees into the Shagger's Hall of Fame Keepers of the Dance. Lisa West Born: March 7, 1964 Lisa didn't start her dance career until age 27. During her Jr High and High School days she was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader. She attended the University of Alabama from where she served as a Varsity Cheerleader for four years and was on the 1984 National Championship squad. Lisa's love of dance began on the Country Western dance floor where she learned two-step, waltz, east coast swing, west coast swing, polka, and chacha. She taught dance line dance and couples dance at Dance Connection studio in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She began competing on the swing and cabaret circuit with friend, Barry Durand. They took advantage of her gymnastic and cheerleading background and performed many daring overhead lifts and drops. Some of their more memorable numbers include "The Wizard of Oz" and "Butterfly Kisses." Together Barry and Lisa won the 1997 US Open Cabaret Championship and were two-time winners of the American Swing Dance Championships in the Showcase Division. In 1998 Lisa met Sam at the USA Grand Nationals in Atlanta when they shared the practice floor before competition. Sam says she chased him but Lisa says he wasn't too hard to catch. Together they have been teaching a promoting shag throughout the country and have even held workshops in France, Spain, England, the Netherlands and aboard cruise ships. Humor Czarnicki and McMann went moose hunting in Alaska. They hired a bush pilot to fly them from Anchorage to the moose hunting area. Each shot a moose and dragged it back to the plane. The pilot said: I can take you both and one moose back to Anchorage, but not the second moose, it would be too heavy a load. McMann said: I m surprised at that, because last year we shot two moose and the pilot we had with the identical plane flew us out. The pilot not wanting to be outdone by a competitor hesitantly agreed to fly the two of them and their two moose back to Anchorage. After the plane took off, hard as the pilot tried to stabilize it, he just couldn t control the aircraft and it crashed. Everyone survived, but were quite dazed as they climbed out of the wreckage. Czarnicki said to McMann: You have any idea where we might be? McMann replied: Not exactly, but it sorta looks like the same area where we crashed last year. Northern Virginia Shag Club Page 12
