We even about great parties in 2014 especially the 2014 Capital Classic in July! Inside this issue: When and Where to Dance 2, 4 Price Increase on Wednesday Night Dancing The 2014 NVSC Board has decided that we need to raise the cost of dancing on Wednesday nights at The Elk s Lodge. The Board is very committed to maintaining the great location we have and to keep the cost down as low as possible. Two things have happened recently that has forced the decision. The Elk s Board is also facing Revenue deficits. Therefore, they have had to raise our cost to cover their costs. We negotiated the increase down, but we couldn t eliminate it. In addition to the Elk s increase, the National Fast Dance Assn has raised the ASCAP royalty fee that we are obligated to pay. So, beginning February 5, 2014, member costs will increase to $5.00, and guest costs will increase to $6.00. That s still quite a bit less than other dance club costs, but it is an increase. IMPORTANT SOS SPRING SAFARI NOTICE A note from Helen Still regarding SOS Spring Safari: I want to share something important with each of you. If you haven't made your reservations for SOS Spring Safari, which will be April 4 13, 2014, you will want to go on and make them as soon as you can. We have been informed that the City of North Myrtle Beach will have a big Quidditch game going on with college students coming in from many of the major colleges around the US. You can go to YouTube and pull up Harry Potter Quidditch and watch the animated videos. Now how they will really play the game would be interesting to see. We don't want this to become a problem with our folks staying in their normal places, so we encourage you to go on and make your reservations now for our SOS Spring event. 5 Volume XX, No. 2 Page 5 Recruiting NVSC business cards are available on the entrance table for our dances. Take a few and use them to recruit others to join NVSC. One way to do that is when you attend other dance venues and you are asked what type of dance you prefer, you can tell them and give them one of our cards. For example, at Bobby s Promotions dances which are held at the same Elks Lodge as our dances, people show considerable interest when you tell them y o u d a n c e t h e r e o n Wednesday nights for $5.00 ($6.00 for non-members); they have paid $22.00 in advance or $27.00 at the door (includes a skimpy buffet). And don t forget to tell them that our ratio of male to female is usually about 50:50, and that we are averaging 100 persons in attendance. Send your opinions, favorite recipes and humor to the editor, Jim Scanlon, jamesscanlon@me. com Humor For those who love the philosophy of ambiguity as well as the idiosyncrasies of English One tequila, two tequila, three tequila... Floor. Atheism is a non-prophet organization. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes? The main reason that Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "where's the self- help section?" she said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. What if there were no hypothetical questions? If a deaf child signs swear words, does his mother wash his hands with soap? If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation? Is there another word for synonym? Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?" What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant? If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages? Would a fly without wings be called a walk? Why do they lock gas station toilets? Are they afraid someone will break-in and clean them? If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked? Can vegetarians eat animal crackers? If the police arrest a mute, do they tell him he has the right to remain silent? Why do they put braille on the drive-through bank machines? How do they get deer to cross the road only at those yellow road signs What was the best thing before sliced bread? One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people. Does the little mermaid wear an algebra? Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? How is it possible to have a civil war? If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown too? If you ate both pasta and antipasto, would you still be hungry? If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done? Whose cruel idea was it for the word 'lisp' to have 's' in it? Why are hemorrhoids called "hemorrhoids" instead of "assteroids"? Why is it called tourist season if we can't shoot at them? Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? Can an atheist get insurance against acts of god? Why do shops have signs, 'guide dogs only', the dogs can't read and their owners are blind?

P e r f o r m i n g R i g h t s organizations from the Founder/President of the N a tional F a s tdance Association. In working with the leaders of the ACSC and SOS over the last 3-4 years, I ve come to organizations. Along with the ACSC and SOS leadership, the leaders of the local dance admire (maybe even clubs need to also be As I look at the overall picture of the national fastdance community I sometimes wonder if any particular individual/ dancer has any idea at all of how much work, effort, DEDICATION and love goes into, and is required by leaders within our national fast-dance scene in order to ensure that envy) the results of the d e ci s io ns of their respective leaders. I have to wonder if the Shag c o m m u n i t y r e a l l y a p p r e c i a t e s t h e dedication of the ACSC and SOS leaderships and the work that they do on behalf of their member clubs. I believe that most commended for their decision to affiliate with t h e N F A, t h e r e b y protecting their clubs from violating Federal Copyright Laws dealing with the presentation of copyrighted music at their events or club dance venues that is saving them potentially a heck of a lot of unnecessary grief. their particular fastdance Shaggers, not all but I w o u l d s t r o n g l y style survives, prospers most, do know and encourage the dancers and is passed along to appreciate the results of e s p e c i a l l y i n t h e the next generation of the leaderships efforts. 8 Page 8 Editor s Note: The ancient Greek name Nepentha is used here to give anonymity to the opinion s author. Then Helen, daughter of Zeus, took other counsel. Straightway she cast into the wine of which they were drinking a drug (Nepenthe) to quiet all pain and strife, and bring forgetfulness of every ill. The Odyssey, Book 4, v [2]. If you have a different opinion, send it to Nepentha c/o Editor at jamesscanlon@m e.com. Opinion Shag Basic vs. Crossover Basic: I don't think we are teaching the newcomers the proper shag basic. When I recently took individual lessons, the first thing I was taught was to always use the crossover basic because it looks better. After that lesson, at the next Wednesday dance I was all set to use the crossover basic. However, as soon as I started dancing I went back to the old Op Ed From Loren style because it was muscle memory. We teach the crossover basic in the intermediate lessons, not the beginner lessons. some reason for that? Is there Why not teach crossover basic initially. Like a faulty golf swing, learning how to swing properly after you have been swinging improperly is extremely difficult because of the old habit. If you learn from a pro how to swing the golf club properly when you first decide to play golf, you don't have to "unlearn" the swing you started with. I believe the same logic should be applied when we teach our newcomers. Nepentha In the January opinion column Nepentha cautions us about using too large of a step when line dancing. While taking big steps is typical when learning new dance steps this tends to cure itself if one keeps dancing. Sooner or later one learns that dancing is more about rhythm than the steps and that when one dances with rhythm one s steps will naturally become more compact. There is, however, another issue occurring in our recent line dancing which is -- not following the directional pattern for that particular line dance. As an example, in the Biker s Shuffle, during the first 16 counts Walkie to your right, now move it on up, move it on up; now walkie to your left, now bring it on back, bring it on back there is a pronounced tendency for many of us to do the walkie to your right (and walkie to your left) on a forward diagonal. This is not the way to do it according to Big Mucci (the creator of the Biker s Shuffle.) The walkie to your right (and left) is begun by walking to the side, *not* walking diagonally forward. Consider the two diagrams below. If we dance by walking diagonally forward (right diagram) we cover much more area. Multiply this by doing the pattern against all four walls and we end up traveling all over the dance floor much more than if all we were doing was stepping too large.

NVSC Shagger Adele Robey Article in The Washington Post We are pleased that one of our members not only has established a playhouse in Anacostia, but was recognized for doing so in an article in the January 12, 2014 edition of Washington Post Magazine. First Person: Adele Robey, CEO, Anacostia Playhouse Interview by Robin Rose Parker I went to Wilson High School, and to the best of my memory they had no theater program. But I joined the rec department up the street, and they used to have a one-act play festival here in D.C. I actually didn t do anything for a long time until our daughter, Julia, went to her first movement class at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. So we kind of threw in with them, and it became our second home. My husband was a musician he played the trumpet in the pit orchestra and I would be onstage and Julia would be onstage when it was a kids show. The best thing was when we did Annie ; she was Annie, I was Miss Hannigan and he was playing the trumpet. It really doesn t get better than that as a family. When we bought the French s restaurant on H Street, my husband, with lots of volunteer help and our retirement money which wasn t much and was way less when we finished made a black box theater. For 11 years, we were there and had just untold numbers of theater companies come through and produce amazing work. It was wonderful. And then my husband sadly and very suddenly passed away, so I sold the building and kept the lease for three years, trying to figure out with my daughter what to do. We sort of said, Okay, do we want to? And we decided we did want to. Off and on, I d go to Anacostia my whole life. My husband was born here, and so he had roots here. He loved to come over and do our trips down memory lane. I came over here one day, and as I came over that bridge at the crossroads of Good Hope [Road] and MLK [Avenue], it felt very welcoming to me. I thought, This is gorgeous. We came over and looked at the warehouse, and I said, That s what we want. I like to work hard. I also like being in the background so that you can let other people shine. I don t want this project to be about me. I mean, obviously, it s got my name attached to it and, yes, we re making it happen, but it s a building. We ve figured out where to fit the walls, but doing this building allows for such interesting stuff to happen. In sort of the hardest times of my life, one of which was right after my husband died, I threw myself into the production of Black Nativity and stage-managed it and produced it. When you are doing theater, you can walk in and close the door and you are in this dark room, and nothing else exists. Everything else drops away, at least for three or four hours, and you are part of something that you are creating with people who have great ideas. And that sharing of ideas and creativity, to me it s just thrilling.
