1 Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music A Proud President s Corner by Dave Bushey Volume XIX, No. 10 Dave Bushey NVSC has been chosen to host the 2015 ACSC Summer Workshop! It s October! The weather has chilled (yay!), SOS Fall Migration has ended (boo!), and the Northern Virginia Shag Club has been awarded the 2015 ACSC Summer Workshop and Party. WHAT?? Yes, I repeat: NVSC has been chosen to host the 2015 ACSC Summer Workshop! This is a huge honor! There was a lot of doubt that we could do it. NVSC has bid on Workshops in the past, but the Carolina Clubs were always chosen. Not this time! Pam Hamer, Marcia Conway and I negotiated hard with several hotels, and your Board chose the Hyatt Dulles as the hotel to be presented. Hyatt stepped up and provided a package for the Workshop that is extraordinary! This will be a Party to remember! So, all of you out-of-town NVSCer s who haven t been back to NoVa in awhile, put the weekend of July 9-12, 2015 on your calendars and MS Outlook. You know who you are!! Enough of the hyperbole, Bushey! Yes, I am still on Cloud 9. SOS Fall Migration was wonderful. Good, crisp, warm weather. Great dancing! The streets were crowded, and the clubs were packed. If you re new to the Shag World, ask your new friends on Wednesday about this week- and- a - h a l f - l o n g Party! And read the pair of a r t i c l e s t h a t w e r e published in the Care Free Times (the quarterly SOS newspaper) about NVSC. They have been republished right her in our. Lots of people were making comments about us! So, now it s October. What s going on with NVSC? Well, the next two months are extremely important to our Club. It s election season, and the Nominations & Elections Committee will contact you soon to determine your eligibility to run and your desire to help lead this club into On October 16, candidates will be officially nominated for 4 officer positions and for 5 Directors-at-Large. Those candidates will introduce themselves to you at the General Meeting on October 23, 2013 at The Elk s Lodge. Elections will follow on Wednesday, November 13th. In between the Elections hoop-la, we will have a Saturday evening Party at the Fairfax Hunt (yep, another return visit!). C h e c k o u t or the Front Desk at the Elk s Lodge for details. And, I ll add a November Party here, too. The 15th Annual Shag-a-Thon is Sunday, November 3. Folks, this is similar to a Walk-a-Thon in which you get sponsors and then d a n c e f o r t h e i r contributions. Get your Donor Packets at the Front Desk at the Elk s. We have raised over $250,000 for Capital Caring over the past 14 years. This year, The Rick Strickland Band with Lesa Hudson will again provide the music. They are nominated many times for the 2013 Carolina Beach Music CAMMY s, so the show will be special! AND, it s upstairs at the Elk s Lodge this year!! Come by, bring your friends AND your Pledge Sheets. The Entrance Fee is $10 100% of which we are donating to Capital Caring, the premiere hospice program in Northern Virginia. 5 Volume XIX, No. 10 Page 5 Beach Music Language Acronyms and Explanations CBMA = Carolina Beach Music Association [similar to the Motion Picture Academy that awards the Oscars, this group organizes the process of awarding the Cammy s ] ACSC = Association of Carolina Shag Clubs [the governing body and business side of the shag clubs, and the three SOS events each calendar year; has a Chairman and Officers, Board of Directors, SOS as a business corporation is a subsidiary of the ACSC] SPA = Shag Preservation Association [organizes dance contests throughout the year, judges determine points awarded to each couple that dances, different levels of competition] CSA = Competitive Shaggers Association [organizes dance contests throughout the year, judges determine points awarded to each couple that dances, has different levels of competition; yes, this is a second competitive dance structure, most dancers choose either SPA or CSA to compete in, but a very few do dance competitively in both organizations] JSA = Junior Shaggers Association [runs Junior SOS each July, organizes dance contests for Juniors during the year; a Junior is a youngster up to the age of 18] SOS = Society of Stranders [now used to name the major social events of the shag dance community, SOS is held in January, April and September] OD = Ocean Drive [reference to general area, not an actual street or road currently] HOTO s = Harold s On The Ocean [2nd location of Fat Harold s, located in Cherry Grove area of North Myrtle Beach] ABSCDJ s = Association of Beach and Shag Club Disc Jockey s ETF = Ellen Taylor Foundation [a primary resource of Junior Shaggers and their families to assist the youngsters participating in shag dance; provides hundreds of gently used and re-conditioned dance shoes to youngsters during Junior SOS each July] There s a lot of acronyms that get used in shag club conversations, so here s a handy guide to aid in understanding some of the lingo. This is most likely just a start, so when you hear other words-initialsphrases used, never hesitate to ask the speaker for a translation of the beach music language. The Horseshoe = area at the beach end of Main Street (in North Myrtle Beach), between OD Resort and the OD Pavilion [concerts and gatherings are held here, frequently designated as a meeting spot] NMB = North Myrtle Beach, SC [city where SOS convenes each January (Mid Winters), April (Spring Safari) and September (Fall Migration)] NVSC = Northern Virginia Shag Club The NVSC logo is now in stone at North Myrtle Beach

6 Page 6 Humor A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale.' He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. 'You talk?' he asks. 'Yep,' the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story? The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so... I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.' 'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running... But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.' The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. 'Ten dollars,' the guy says. 'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?' 'Because he's a liar... He's never been out of the yard.' What do Ghosts dance to?? Soul music! Why did the Skeleton not go to the dance? He had no body to dance with! RECIPE PUMPKIN PIE CAKE (From Mary Ann Davis) 3 eggs 1-12 oz can evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed) 1-15 oz can pumpkin (or fresh equivalent) 1 cup sugar (or 1/2 cup dark brown sugar and 1/3 cup regular sugar) 3 tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice (or mix your own) 1 box yellow or spice cake mix (2 layer size) 1/2 cup melted margarine or butter 3/4 + cup chopped pecans or walnuts Beat eggs and milk together; add pumpkin, sugar and spice(s). Mix until well blended. Pour into a 9x13 greased pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over mixture. Drizzle with melted margarine. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes or until done. Serve (warm or cold) with topping or whipped cream. Enjoy! OPTIONAL IDEA: Let cool and flip over so the crisp is on the bottom. Mix cool whip, cream cheese and powdered sugar, cover the pumpkin part and refrigerate overnight. (The nut layer gets crunchy.) Do You Remember Drew and Molly? It's been hectic to say the least for Molly and I. She's currently into the 3rd phase of her CPA tests and work/ travel for me has been nonstop it seems like. Hopefully, we'll be able to get back out to dancing one of these days but I mainly wanted to let you know we're still kicking :) Also, please tell David & Nancy hello and sorry we haven't been back to see them since their return to Florida. - Drew P.S. Molly and I got engaged recently too, still can't believe she said yes!!

10 Page 10 Editor s Note Maryann Lesnick Publisher In the past month I have received plaudits from many of our members about the new format of t h e S h a g R a g. Responding, I have had to explain to them that the principal architect of the newsletter is Maryann Lesnick. The old-timers know Maryann, but many newer members do not because her paying job has kept her away from many of our activities. M a r y a n n s j o b i s demanding of her talents, in fact, most of her f o r m a t t i n g o f t h e information we provide to her is accomplished while she is away on business travel. You most likely will see her at our special events on weekends, such at the upcoming October 12 dance at the Fairfax Hunt Club and the Shagathon at the Elks Lodge on November 3 rd. When you see her, please extend your appreciation. - Jim Scanlon White House Ornaments Do you collect the White H o u s e C h r i s t m a s o r n a m e n t s? 11 Volume XIX, No. 10 Page 11 Still More Great Feedback about the Classic Hey everyone! I hope you all are having a great summer. We went on another trip, this time to the Northern Virginia S h a g C l u b ' s R e u n i o n Weekend, the 2013 Capital Classic and WOW what a weekend it was! This was this club's 20th. Anniversary. On Friday night the theme was to wear or rather layer all the shag club party shirts or hats and beach club shirts or hats you have ever danced in. I think the winner had over 40 shirts and hats. I had never seen this done before, but it was a lot of fun. Go on the website and see all the pictures. There were great DJs all weekend long with several dance workshops. T h e r e w a s s p e c i a l entertainment both nights by the Junior Shaggers and they were awesome. There was hospitality hours each day and the Saturday evening meal was out of this world. We were inspired with their Past President's reception and listening to each one of their experiences as President. It confirmed to us how dedicated all of them were to their club. Everyone was so friendly and welcomed us from the time we arrived to the time we departed. We met so many new friends and several that we knew already. If you ever have the chance you should visit this club, you will be welcomed with open arms and friendly faces. This was definitely worth our trip up to Fairfax, VA. and we plan on visiting it again. 12 Page 12 Shagtime 2 -Juniors Keeping the Love for Shag Alive & Well A note from Sam and Lisa West Many thanks to Kyle for writing this wonderful article about the teams trip to Washington. Not only did the kids have a great time but they were wonderful ambassadors of shag. This trip was partially funded by the donations they received from individuals, shag clubs, and during Spring SOS as they bar hopped Ocean Drive and performed for everyone. Thank you so much for your generosity. We are continuing our fund raising efforts for our Thanksgiving trip to California. If you would like to make a donation of cash, air miles, or Marriott points please contact us and we will put it to good use. Sam s cell , lisaswing@aol.com. Hi, I would like to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about a team I am a proud member of and some of our great experiences we have been having as junior shaggers.. My name is Kyle Sellers, I am thirteen years old and I am a member of the new junior shag group called Shagtime 2. This is the newest junior shag team featuring dancers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Our team members range in age from Our team s c h o r e o g r a p h e r s a r e champion dancers, Sam & Lisa West. Most of the team members met through our numerous years of attending an event called Jr. SOS but didn t become a team until the fall of last year. We have been working hard this past year to raise money to help our team travel to W a s h i n g t on, D C t h i s summer. The team was invited by the Northern Virginia Shag Club to come and do an exhibition for their annual party. While we were there we were also able to see all the sites in Washington, DC. The Northern Virginia Shag Club was very excited to have us there at the 20th anniversary party, The Capital Shag Classic. For many of the team members this was our first trip to Washington, DC and seeing first hand some of America s historical landmarks. Our group was able to tour a r o u n d a n d s e e t h e Washington Monument, Ford s Theatre, the White House, the US Capitol and several other interesting places like the Smithsonian Museums of American and Natural History, the Smithsonian Air & Space M u s e um a nd A rl in g ton Cemetery. Riding the city tram system- The Metro, was an adventure in and of itself. We even performed our team routine in front of the Capitol building! While at The Capital Shag Classic party, our team Shagtime 2 performed as couples on Friday night, we did our team performance routine on Saturday night as well as dancing for dollars with the party participants and then finally helped Ms. Lisa teach a line dance workshop on Sunday. Our team started working together less than a year ago. We had our first practice this past October and danced just a few weeks later on the stage of the Alabama Theatre at the Carolina Beach Music Awards Show. We have also been to numerous shag club parties throughout the South this year. We, Shagtime 2 competed in the Team Division at the USA Grand National Dance Championships in Atlanta and placed 3rd. We plan to continue showcasing our dance not only throughout the South but other parts of the United States; in fact, we are going to compete in Burbank, California this November in the US Open S w i n g D a n c e Championships. This is going to be by far an awesome experience for us all. So if you see any of us around, be sure to wish us luck as we travel across the United States representing Shag. We invite you to the OD Resort Ballroom Saturday, September 14, from 8-10pm to meet, mingle and dance with the kids. The team will be performing at 8:30 and 9:30. Come out and show your support for these talented, hardworking kids. Like us on Facebook at Shagtime 2 Fan Page. We are proud to be continuing the heritage of this wonderful classic dance. We hope to pass on the enjoyment of Carolina Shag to other kids and adults as we share our passion for shagging at various dance and charity events. The above article was written after NVSC s Classic at which they performed. During the Classic, Rick Hendrix led the effort to support these youngsters by obtaining donations from NVSC members and local businesses. Here is a list of those businesses that donated, all of which are home improvement contractors: BMS Roofing Corporation AT Pro Construction Exterior Medics Dryhome Roofing and Siding Marco Sales & Associates
