Send them a card, phone them, visit them in person, contact them on Facebook (FB) or all of the above. I know I will remember my Mom (Louise Logue Rigg) in my heart. Memorial Day is Monday, May 28. This is a day to remember the men and women who died while serving in our armed services. Thanks to them for defending our country and our freedom. This is not to be confused with Veteran s Day which celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans SOS Spring Safari was such a blast. Hope everyone that attended the April 24 NVSC Backroom Party at Fat Harold s had a good time especially the NVSC members that enjoyed one free drink of their choice because of their NVSC membership. NVSC members that were not able to attend the Backroom Party had a Left Behind Party at the Elk s Lodge on April 25. The attendance was good and (again), NVSC members were able to enjoy one free drink of their choice because of their current membership. Joe Peoples, Jason and Jeanne Potter, John and Donna Romito, Linda Trader and Joe Miante, and I represented NVSC as the Pittsburgh Steel City Boogie Club hosted their 20th Boogie in the Burgh April 5-8. A good time was had by all. Kathy and Loren Kropat and I attended the Virginia Gentlemen s Spring Dance and Beach Party on April 14 at the Fredericksburg Elk s. The Entertainers played and the dance floor was full. The Beckley Area Shag Club (BASC) will be hosting their 24th Annual Mountain Boogie Walk May at Hern s Hangar in Beckley, WV. Guest instructors will be Sam and Lisa West. The DJs will be John Smith and Ed Timberlake. This is always a fun party so see the flyer here in the Shag Rag or pick one up from the front desk at the Elk s Lodge on Wednesday nights. ATTENTION: NVSC will be having a planning meeting at JW & Friends located at 6531 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA on Saturday, May 19 at 12:30 p.m. for the upcoming 2018 Capital Classic. The food is good and reservations are not required so come on down and help us plan NVSC s biggest party of the year. The 24th Anniversary Grand National Dance Championships (GNDC) will be held May in Atlanta, GA at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. NVSC member Craig Jennings will be one of the DJs and he and Heather Jennings (also a NVSC member) are sponsors of the Non-Professional Shag Division. The Capital Shag Classic will be held July at the Westin Dulles Airport. Our guest instructors will be National Junior Shag Champions Jackson and Lizzie Batten. Their mother is Jennifer Duke Batten and their grandmother is Judy Duke. Dana Grubb and Butch Metcalf will spin the records for our dancing pleasure as we dance on the large dance floor. There will be two Free Pours, shag and line dance workshops, heavy hors d oeuvres on Friday night and a plated dinner on Saturday night, 50/50 drawing, ELVIS will be in the building Friday night, and there will be special entertainment on Saturday night. 4 Continuing Shag Education Course (non credit!) If you are new to shag (or maybe just on the young side) you might not have heard of the Tams or had the pleasure of seeing them in concert and dancing to their music. I was fortunate to see them a few times at the beach, mostly in clubs or venues that no longer exist. So I thought it would be fun to continue our (my) shag education by looking at some of the folks behind the music we dance to. The Tams are front and center in that group. The band formed in 1960, performing in local taverns and nightclubs for wages of $1.25 each. The considered this like money from heaven. Imagine getting paid to sing. Paydays in these early days only provided enough money to buy matching multicolored Tam O Shanter hats they wore on stage (I m not sure many folks even know what those hats are called.) The hats inspired local patrons of the nightspots to nickname them The Tams, a name that would eventually be known around the world. In 1962, producer Bill Lowery agreed to cut one demo single on the group and from that they had a hit single on Arlen Records. Untie Me, a Joe South composition, became a Top 20 on the Billboard R&B chart. Their first album, Presenting the Tams, produced a number one record, What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am) that reached the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song spent three weeks at number one on the Cash Box R&B chart. This propelled The Tams into professional status and national popularity. They were soon playing to sold out auditoriums from The Howard Theater in Washington, DC to the famed Apollo Theater in New York City. Hey Girl Don t Bother Me was also a US hit in The Tams had one further major US hit (in 1968) when Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy, peaked at #26 on the US R&B chart, and subsequently made the UK Top 40 in And it basically became the official Shag theme song. Their 1965 recording I ve Been Hurt was their biggest regional hit (based on sales and airplay) prior to The group reached the number one slot in the UK Singles Chart in September 1971, with the re-issue of Hey Girl Don t Bother Me, thanks to its initial support from the then thriving UK Northern soul scene. The song also went to number one in Ireland, making them the first African American soul group to top the Irish Charts. The group charted again in 1987, when their song There Ain t Nothing Like Shaggin reached #21 in UK, propelled by a regionally-popular dance, you guessed it, the Carolina shag. The song featured heavily in the 1989 film, Shag. (BTW, have you ever watched it? Pop some popcorn and make a date to do it!) However, the track was banned by the BBC because the word shag means well, you know what it means in colloquial British English. The Tams are super popular in the Southeastern United States, and they continue to record new music and perform at well-attended concerts. In 1999, they were featured performers with Jimmy Buffett on his CD, Beach House on the Moon, and also toured with him around the country. 4

5 After years of appearances and 10 albums The Tams have been honored with two Gold Records. In 1986 the group received the coveted award and title Beach Band of the Decade, at the Beach Music Awards. In 1988, The Tams were spotlighted as the Outstanding Black Musical Group by the Atlanta Black History Awards. In 1992, The Tams were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Tams have bridged the generations of music. Their unique sound spans all ages, styles and regions. They are classic with an exhilarating stage show. They are the Beach, they are good times, they are times, they are simply rock and roll at its finest. Recording chronology What Kind of Fool #1 R& B / #6 Top 40 (1963) This was The Tams first national hit record, bringing them into the households of millions through a tremendous amount of airplay. Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy #26 Top 40 (1968) This song is The Tams greatest US Chart success, selling over 1,000,000 copies and becoming their only RIAA Certified Gold Record single. Hey Girl Don t Bother Me Three weeks at #1 in England (1971) One of three UK chart hits for The Tams, this ABC/Dunhill records release also has the distinction of being the #1 song of year in the UK. Walkin Dr. Bill Officially recorded by The Tams (with G.C. Cameron), this was a duet with the former lead singer of The Spinners singing much of the lead. Charles Pope, Lil Red Cottle and the rest of the Tams lent excellent background vocals to the song. This heavily R&B-flavored but danceable song sat at #1 for almost a month on the Rhythm-and-Beach Top 40. Walkin Dr. Bill was #1 in the Summer of 2000 and won Song of the Year at the 2000 CAMMY Awards. I ve Been Hurt Although never on the charts, I ve Been Hurt was most likely the biggest regional hit ever prior to To show the importance of regional sales and airplay, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs have an RIAA Gold Record for Maurice s song May I that never made the Billboard Top 100. Many radio stations and DJs consider I ve Been Hurt to certainly be the biggest selling and most played Tams song EVER, even though it was primarily popular in the southeast (and not recognized as a national hit by Billboard). At end of exit, take immediate right on to Brandon. Take next left on to Bland. At 2nd light, turn left on to Amherst and go up & across the bridge. At bottom of bridge (traffic light), take immediate left on to Springfield. Street dead-ends into Backlick Rd. (You can see JW s, slight diagonal across the street). Turn right on to Backlick and then turn immediate left into JW s parking lot. From the west and I-66, avoid the Beltway and take Fairfax Parkway (east/south) Fairfax Parkway eventually will turn into Springfield/Franconia Parkway. You will follow parkway almost as far as going to Springfield Mall. You ll be about 1.5 or 2 miles short of Mall when you need to exit Parkway. Take the Backlick Rd exit. At end of exit ramp, turn left on to Backlick. At the split, bear right and keep going straight. Look for JW s on your right. Coming north on I-95, from Lorton area. Just past Newington, take the Backlick Rd north exit. This is a confusing exit. Have faith and just follow the arrows that say Backlick Rd. north. After a few miles on Backlick, stay in right lane and keep going straight at the split. JW s is on the right. 6

7 Ziggy: dancing in circles, landing in the pen. It was Friday night at the Marrakech, Morocco Shag Club. Bruno Steengarten was the DJ and he was playing some of the oldies from the late Forties, and commenting on them ad nauseam. I was at the bar getting a Merlot from Paul Ponytail when I heard Bruno playing an old favorite that brought back sour memories of a mammalian beauty I once dated. I rushed to Bruno and berated him for breaking his promise not to play that tune anymore. Bruno said he was sorry, but was pressured by Sylvia Swivelhips who had just walked in the door. I said Of all the shag shacks in Marrakech, why did she have to walk into this one! It was very difficult for me, but I never could let feelings overcome my principle of being kind to all until they deserved a punch in the mouth. Sylvia said: It s been a long time, Zig, I m so sorry, I made a big mistake. I was about to comment when a bomb went off just outside the front door. The blast threw her into my arms and knocked out the lights in the building. There we stood, holding each other under the most unusual circumstances; sirens were wailing, ceiling tiles were falling and Bruno was playing Mama s drinkin liquor... again. Enraptured by the warm feeling of Sylvia pressing against my body that only memories could bring, I started counting: One and two, three Four, five and six. We started shagging, right there, among the dust and chaos, oblivious to everyone. And we even did the pivot, including the correct step step part. The police arrived, shining flashlights and bringing some order to the place. And then the police chief, Twitch Clouseau, arrived. He asked his policemen what these two people were doing here in the dark, and one of them said they were shagging. The chief said: I know its dark, but here! In front of everyone? The policeman said, Yes, I hear it s a Carolina USA tradition, they dance in circles whenever they don t know what to do. Well, said the chief, if that s the case, tell everyone else in the place to start shaggin, because no one here seems to know what to do. At that moment, Sylvia said to the chief: You re cute! At which the chief blushed, but seemed to like it. Then the local religious police arrived and asked what was being done about the debauchery that had been going on here. To which the chief answered: I am taking action, I m rounding up the usual suspects including one outsider, this guy Ziggy. As the police hauled off Ziggy he appealed to Sylvia for help, to which she replied, Au revoir Ziggy, Twitch and I are flying off to Marseille to get married. A tear rolled down Ziggy s cheek. The dates for Junior SOS 2018 are July 17-22, The headquarters will once again be the O.D. Beach and Golf Resort. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to have the resort serve as our headquarters for Junior SOS. Our association is so blessed to not only have the resort to use for Junior SOS but we also have the opportunity for our kids to dance in the great clubs that we as adults get to dance in North Myrtle Beach. 7
