1 Shag Rag A Proud Member of: PRESIDENT S CORNER by Dave Bushey June 2013 Vol. XIX, No. 6 Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music Isn t the internet wonderful? I came into the office early this morning and had numerous s from my friends that talk about our freedoms in this country, the costs associated with earning and keeping them and the stories behind some of them. I always like the story behind Taps and the stories of Medal of Honor winners. One caught my eye this morning. The story of a fellow who was just a janitor at the Air Force Academy back in the 60 s & 70 s. He was properly recognized in 1984 by President Reagan for his WWII heroics and to this day is the only Army Enlisted man buried in the US Air Force Academy Cemetery. As we start blazing into the summer season, please take a moment and remember all of those who have paid the ultimate price for protecting and preserving this great country! Many of you will be traveling to the beaches soon! Maybe even North Myrtle Beach. And others will be flocking to other Shag Club events all summer long. If you re interested in attending, there is a schedule of Club Parties and Events at Richmond, Beckley, Battlefield Boogie (Fredericksburg) are just a few. And, of course, there are lots and lots of Festivals all summer long all throughout the Carolinas! Just troll the net (there s that thing again!). We in the Northern Virginia Shag Club are gearing up for our BIG Event July next month. Tickets are going fast and they are limited (!), so be sure to buy yours either through the NVSHAG.org website or at The Elk s every Wednesday. And if you have some time to devote to the preparations, be sure to contact Angie Bushey (AngelaABushey@yahoo.com). There s ALWAYS more to do, isn t there? Did you have a good time at the picnic last month? Well, be sure to tell the Board. Maybe we ll have another! 102 attendees at The Elk s Lodge on May 29 th. It s getting BIG!! 3 How I Discovered NVSC... Here is a couple, Ed and Pam Hamer, who grew up in the Carolinas shag dancing to beach music. And like so many of us who migrated to the DC area they had to adjust to this unique environment, and of course, new jobs. After making the adjustment they wanted to continue their shag dancing but their new friends and neighbors knew nothing about it. So, like many of us, they turned to "Google" and typed in "shag dancing," and found that they could take shag dance lessons at Northern Virginia Community College presented by Janis Grimes. At those lessons Janis told them the Northern Virginia Shag Club had weekly dancing at Rene's, and at their first session they knew this was the place for them. Pam and Ed are administrators at Madiera School where they reside on campus. They have been active in NVSC affairs, serving on its board and committees, and are regulars at just about all of the NVSC events, JW & Friends, SOS, and any other shag dancing opportunities in the area. 6 Pro Instructors for the 2013 Capital Classic Reunion Weekend Our Professional Shag Dance Instructors for the Classic this year are Sam and Lisa West. Rave reviews from the Classic of 2007 has them returning to us this year; always a crowd pleaser, sure to spiff up your dancing with any of their workshops! About Sam and Lisa Sam West Born: July 14, 1972 Sam started shag dancing at age 9 after his mother, Barbara, became interested in dancing. During his school years Sam also enjoyed soccer, baseball and basketball. As a junior shagger, Sam danced with several partners including Terri Alberty, who he won two junior national titles with. Terri's father, Shad, who many consider one of the best shag dancers ever, worked with Sam and was the biggest influence on Sam's dancing career. In 1994 Sam and partner, Melissa Calabrese, won the Non-Pro National title on their way to becoming the Overall National Shag Champions. Then in 1995 Sam partnered up with his sister, Sarah, and they went on to capture 8 Professional Division titles and 4 Overall titles. Sam also won the Pro and Overall Shag titles in 2001 with Jackie McGee, again in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with Jessica McAlhany, and most recently in 2010 and 2011 with Leslie Jennings. Sam is a 6-time champion of the Carolina Shag Division at the USA Grand National Dance Championships and a 3 time US Open Shag Champion. Three times at the Grand Nationals Sam has been named Entertainer of the Weekend, first for his portrayal of super spy Austin Powers, second for a Country/Swing number with his very pregnant wife to Two of a Kind Working on a Full House, and thirdly for just being Sam. He has also been a member, captain and choreographer for the National Shag Dance Championship Dance Team. In November of 2010 Sam and Lisa won their first big title together when they were named the winners of the Sophisticated Swing Division at the US Open Swing Dance Championships. They performed a memorable and creative number to Gene Kelly's Singing in the Rain. Sam has made several appearances on national and local TV and was a featured dancer in the movie Shag and in Alabama's Shaggin' on the Boulevard music video. In 1999 he and his sister, Sarah, were the first inductees into the Shagger's Hall of Fame Keepers of the Dance. Lisa West Born: March 7, 1964 Lisa didn't start her dance career until age 27. During her Jr High and High School days she was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader. She attended the University of Alabama from where she served as a Varsity Cheerleader for four years and was on the 1984 National Championship squad. Lisa's love of dance began on the Country Western dance floor where she learned two-step, waltz, east coast swing, west coast swing, polka, and cha-cha. She taught dance line dance and couples dance at Dance Connection studio in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She began competing on the swing and cabaret circuit with friend, Barry Durand. They took advantage of her gymnastic and cheerleading background and performed many daring overhead lifts and drops. Some of their more memorable numbers include "The Wizard of Oz" and "Butterfly Kisses." Together Barry and Lisa won the 1997 US Open Cabaret Championship and were twotime winners of the American Swing Dance Championships in the Showcase Division. In 1998 Lisa met Sam at the USA Grand Nationals in Atlanta when they shared the practice floor before competition. Sam says she chased him but Lisa says he wasn't too hard to catch. Together they have been teaching a promoting shag throughout the country and have even held workshops in France, Spain, England, the Netherlands and aboard cruise ships. 9 Getting Ahead (Some advice for what it is worth from Jim Scanlon. If you are beyond this stage, give it to your children or grandchildren. It works!) 1. Two basic ingredients are required: Substance, and Image. Of the two, substance (professional skill, knowledge and ability) is the most important and will determine more than image how high you can go. But without a good image, not enough people will recognize you and want you to join their organization. Described below are other important aspects that support these two ingredients. 2. Set Realistic, achievable personal objectives (what grade/salary level do you want to attain and how long will it realistically take to get there), and include the intermediate objectives). Put them on paper in chart form, with time milestones. 3. Continue to pursue your education. Don't fight the odds, statistics show a direct correlation between education and advancement. Without education, your chances of getting ahead are comparable to winning the local lottery, i.e., seven million to one. 4. Continue to learn more about the technical and administrative aspects of the field in which you are working. Train yourself. The more you learn about your job, the more you will learn about those things that relate to it and affect it, thus, you will be broadening your perspective and increasing your skills, knowledge and abilities. 5. Be mobile (organizationally and geographically). Work it out with your spouse or others who depend on you in advance. If you are limited to your local area, then adjust your objectives downward. 6. Consider career alternatives in advance. When a person asks you if you would be interested in taking a position of higher responsibility, be prepared to give an answer immediately. Any hesitation is a good indication that you "don't have it together." I call this What-if drills; making use of dead time to think about the possibilities and what your answer will be. 7. Always project a professional image (dress, posture, articulation and comportment). It is better to spend your money on clothes than on a fancy automobile. 8. Network (communicate continuously with others who want to get ahead). 9. Increase your visibility by volunteering for projects beyond your immediate work environment. Actively participate in professional organizations, i.e., attending chapter meetings and doing volunteering work. 10. Always be ethical, it is the only acceptable conduct. Always tell the truth, and admit mistakes openly. Truth has no alternative. 11. Bring only solutions to management, not problems (they have enough as it is). 12. In your current job, continually identify product/service defects and analyze them to identify causes and preventive actions. Remedy the causes and implement the preventive actions, and follow-up to ensure they remain effective. Get out of the remedial mode and into the preventive one (getting ahead of the "power curve"). 13. If you are dissatisfied with the way your current organization is being managed, work hard within the system to change it, but never "bad-mouth" your organization. If, after three attempts the head of your organization refuses to change it, you must leave, if you don't, you most likely will become part of the problem, lessening your organization's effectiveness along with your chances for getting ahead. Humor The successful Texas rancher decided to take a vacation and drive up to New England to see what all those liberals did for a living. While up there he took a wrong turn and couldn t figure out how to get to his destination. He saw a farmer on the side of the road and stopped to ask directions. He said: Say pardner, can you tell me how to get to Bangor? The farmer replied: Yes, you re not too far from there now, just go down the road to the junction and turn right; two miles more and you will come to a crossroad, turn right again and two miles more you ll be at Bangor. The Texan said: Many thanks; I noticed your duds, are you a farmer? He replied, yup. The Texan said: Is your farm near here? He said: Sure is... you see that fence over there, it goes up the hill and across the ridge to that ravine and back down to the road, that s my farm. The Texan said: You know, I got a farm back in Texas that is so big, when I get up in the morning I drive west all day, and when the sun goes down, I m still not to the end of my farm. The farmer replied: I know, I had a car like that once myself. Northern Virginia Shag Club Page 9
