1 April, 2015 Volume 49, No. 04 Board and Committee Members The People Who Make This Club Function Angie Messina: President, John King: Vice-President, Pat Barker: Treasurer, Carol Posthumus: Recording Secretary, Jody Milligan: Corresponding Secretary/Sunshine, Alan Willis: A Square D Representative, Karen Geller-Shinn: Advertising & Publicity, Ken Kerner: Badges, Margaret MacCurdy: Class Coordinator, Phil & Anne Hays: Dance Hosts John King: Holler Editor, John King: Membership, Bob Messina: Photographer, Sharon Seguine: Visitations, Bob Messina: Ways & Means, Alan Willis: Website Coordinator A Quick Look Back at March President s Message by Angie Messina We began March with our Spring Break! Student Level ¾-Way Dance with Jim Elder cueing rounds and Jay Henderson calling class level tips. Square Dance Beginning II classes concluded on Tuesday March10, and Beginning III classes started on March 24. Our first visitation was scheduled for Sunday March 8 to the A Square D Leprechaun Ball at Buena Park Community Center in Buena Park, but nobody from our club attended. The board meeting was held on Wednesday March 18 at our house (the Messina s). The Bakersfield Fiesta was our second scheduled visitation. We particularly enjoyed the pot-luck dinner on Saturday evening, since that was the only time we were able to spend with our club members and friends. Our monthly restaurant fundraiser was on Monday March 30 at Thai Dishes. Thanks to all who supported the fundraiser. And thanks to Chi-Chi s Pizza, from whom we received a generous check from our fundraiser in February. 2 What You Can Look Forward To This Month Sierra Hillbillies Holler April 2015 Beginners III classes continue on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Santa Clarita Park. We could really use more angels so that we can have three squares dancing, with a smaller ratio of students to angels per square. PLEASE START NOW TO RECRUIT FOR OUR SEPTEMBER CLASS AT VALENCIA MEADOWS PARK!!! WE CAN T DEPEND SOLELY ON THE SEASONS MAGAZINE TO BRING IN NEW STUDENTS!!!! Because Easter falls on our regular dance date, we are rescheduling our April Fools Paradise dance to Sunday April 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the SCV Senior Center, Market Street in Newhall. The caller is Michael Kellogg and the cuer is Cindy Mower. The board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday April 15 at 7:30, at Posthumus house. The 55 th California State Square Dance Convention is the weekend of April at the Marina Village Conference Center, 1936 Quivira Way in San Diego. On Saturday April 25 we are visiting Buckles & Bows for their Sunshine or Showers dance at Goebel Adult Center in Thousand Oaks from 7:15 to 10:45 pm. The caller is Eric Henerlau, and Gus and Lynn DeFore are cueing rounds. Our monthly restaurant fundraiser is at Chili s at The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch on Monday April 27 from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm. Thank you for your continued support of our club and the square dance activity, and most of all, for your friendship. Angie Messina, President Visitation Report by Alan Willis We had two official visitations during March. Our first was to the ASD Orange District s Leprechaun Ball on March 8 with Dan Clairmont, Bill Tex Gipson, Dale Hoppers and Dennis Young calling this class level dance for students who started in September Unfortunately, illnesses and the distance to Buena Park once again resulted in no Hillbillies attending this dance. Our second March visitation was to the Bakersfield Fiesta on 3/20-22 with Tony Oxendine, Bronc Wise, Charlie Robertson, Michael Kellogg and Justin Russell sharing the calling duties. Over the three days a total of 11 Hillbillies were in attendance: John King & Jody Milligan, Bobbie Reilley, Chris Clarke & Joni Micals, Paul Aunchman, Joy Collett, George & Adel Kirby, Andre Melkonian and Rosie Smith. The Board has selected the Buckles & Bows Sunshine or Showers Dance on April 25 th at the Goebel Adult Center in Thousand Oaks as our official visitation for the month. Gus & Lynn De Fore will be cuing rounds 7:15-8:00 PM and between tips, and Eric Henerlau will be calling Plus squares 8:00-10:30 PM. Page 2 of 7 hillbillies.vp@gmail.com
3 Kitchen Report By Angie Messina Thanks to the Kitchen Crew for our March 1 Spring Break! Student Level ¾ Way Dance: Ken and Kathy Kerner, and John King and Jody Milligan, and Bob and Angie Messina as well as anyone else who brought goodies. The Kitchen Crew for the April 12 Fools Paradise Dance consists of George and Adel Kirby, Bob Kofnovec, Frank Kopecky and Gail Blair. Please be reminded that we put out light appetizer-type munchies at the beginning of the dance, saving the majority of the food for break time at 3:45. When it is your turn to serve, we ask each person to please bring enough refreshments to feed two squares. This means a couple should bring food to feed four squares. If you can t serve on the date you are scheduled, please arrange a switch and notify Phil and Anne Hays and me (Angie Messina) so I can correctly acknowledge the people who are serving. If you are assigned to the kitchen crew, you are asked not only to bring refreshments, but also to help arrange the food on the serving table, and to help clean up after the dance. If you can t stay to help clean up, it is suggested that you trade dates with someone else, so that the burden of clean-up is shared by the entire crew. KITCHEN CREW INSTRUCTIONS Please arrive between 1:30 and 1:45 PM we rely on the Kitchen Crew members to help Phil and Anne Hays set up the decorations for the dance and two members to act as Club Greeters. If everyone arrives on time, the work goes quickly and the Kitchen Crew will be able to enjoy the dancing starting at 2:00 PM. Also, if you are assigned to the Kitchen Crew for this dance but cannot serve, it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangements to switch with someone assigned to a future dance (a copy of the 2014 Kitchen Crew assignment list is available on the Sierra Hillbillies website, and to follow through at that future date. Please contact Phil and Anne Hays, our Dance Hosts, to coordinate food dishes and notify them of any Kitchen Crew substitutions. by Alan E. Willis, ASD Delegate Looking Back at March: March 25 - ASD Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara District monthly meeting, Canoga Park: - Buckles & Bows announced that they will change to an earlier starting time for their monthly dances beginning in June 2015 with rounds 7:00-7:30 PM and squares 7:30-10:00 PM. Page 3 of 7 hillbillies.vp@gmail.com
4 - Lads N Lassies will try alternating Mainstream and Plus tips at their next dance on May 4 th. - Valley Trailers will have a special class-level dance on Saturday, May Our guest speaker, ASD Senior Director Diane Issacs, provided an explanation of the operation of a solo dancer rotation board as a way to ensure that solo dancers get matched with other solo dancers. Diane stressed that the keys to the success of the solo rotation board are that only one person manages the board, make sure everyone understands it s very bad etiquette to sign onto the board and then pair up with someone, and announce the solo board frequently during the dance. Other suggested ways to help solo dancers get partners: o Phantom Squares offers a 20 percent discount off admission to their dances if dancers sign up for the solo rotation board. o Buckles & Bows use a Sheriff (a different person at each dance) whose job is to make sure all solo dancers have a partner for each tip o Heels & Souls issue wristbands numbered 2 through 5 to every person who can dance the Beau position. Each person with a wristband dances the first and last tip with their partner. When the tip number shown on their wristband is about to begin, they have to find someone wearing a Solo ribbon and dance with them. Coming up in April: April The 55 th Annual California State Square Dance Convention will be held at the Marina Village Conference Center, 1936 Quivira Way, San Diego, CA. Since this convention is an official ASD visitation, all of our club members who attend will have the extra benefit of ASD insurance coverage. More information is available at April 27 - ASD Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara District monthly meeting will be held at 7:00 PM at Denny s Restaurant, 8330 Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Canoga Park, CA. This will be the first meeting chaired by our newly installed District Director, Jean Peacher. Interested club members are always invited to attend to hear what s happening with other clubs in the area and what initiatives are being undertaken by our parent organization, Associated Square Dancers. 5 Sunshine Corner By Jody Milligan Joni Micals 4/05 Rosie Smith 4/10 Kathy Kerner 4/13 Peggy Alfeld 4/19 Jody Milligan 4/19 Gail Shuping 4/24 Phil & Peggy Alfeld 4/5 Phil & Anne Hays 4/24 All the news that s fit we print: First, wonderful news for the Willis family. Ben, Eileen & Alan s son, who at the age of 32, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer just 8 months ago, is now deemed cancer free after the reading of his latest PET scan. For those who missed Alan & Eileen at the last dance it was due to colds, which Alan continued to battle for another two weeks or more. Then he managed to break a bone in his left foot that no one else has. Leave it to Alan. However, kudos go to Alan. He does so much above & beyond to help keep this club going. He just took on the additional task of keeping the visitation list. I think he & VP John are vying for who can hold the most jobs. Looks like Alan is ahead at the moment. In my requests for news two of the best were from Hans Lokkart & Bobbie Riley. He said: I love sunshine, but we need rain. He will let me if there is a deep freeze or tornado in his life. Hopefully, neither will happen. Unfortunately, we must say goodbye to dancing with Hans as he has decided to hang up his dancing shoes. Bobbie was thrilled to death because she got to do a round dance with Mike Seastrom at the Bakersfield s Fiesta. If you haven t seen Mike on the dance floor, he is one of the smoothest round dancers I have ever seen. The Bakersfield Fiesta weekend was great. One of the callers was Bob Baier, one of my favorites. He loves to mix things up & presents a challenge even at mainstream. As usual, we camped with the Mountain Squares. Cindy Bell held her annual Margarita Party Friday night. Saturday night there was a huge potluck with dancers from many clubs. Page 5 of 7 hillbillies.vp@gmail.com
6 We visited the mainstream hall so we could dance with friends who are taking classes with the Farmers & Charmers. While there we met some wonderful couples from that club & spent time with them after the dance. The travelers, Joni & Chris camped with us, so it was great to see them. We never know when or where they might show up. Unfortunately they found that Lucky, one of their dogs, was allergic to a new food they had been giving him. Since he was scratching so much he has had to wear a sweater until he heals. Ken & Kathy Kerner flew away to Cincinnati in order to attend the wedding of Ken s Godson, Scott. Ken & Scott s father, Chuck have been friends for over 49 years. The family lived in Thousand Oaks until Chuck s job required him to move, so this was the first opportunity Kathy has had to meet Ken s friends. She said the wedding was lovely & the weather actually good. So many of our Hillbillies are facing health challenges at this time. Will Barker is dealing with shortness of breath; Dan Stern is battling diabetes, which is hereditary. He is trying to stay busy by doing things that are not too demanding, but he says: Everything is a measured effort. Frank Kopecky is in a medication trial, but of course doesn t know if he is getting the drug or a placebo. He is also being tested for other problems. He & Gail are staying on the low side of activities for the present. We wish all our Hillbillies good health. Gail Blair has returned from a trip to Huntsville, Alabama for her oldest son s birthday & to visit grandchildren. On her arrival she was greeted with eight inches of snow. Eileen Willis put a group of Hillbillies & friends together & most joined for dinner at Chili s. Afterwards, all met at Golden Valley High School & went to the performance of A Starry, Starry Night with young people performing from: So you think you can dance. It was a great show & helped the Wish Foundation raise money for students in the William S. Hart High School District. Thought for the month You have to look on the bright side, even if there ain t one.
