1 Glacier County September 2012 Greetings 4-Hers, I hope all of you have had a fantastic summer and made many memories. It has been a busy summer around our office as well, and with the fall coming in its time for everyone to wrap up their project books. I am looking forward to seeing some of the great works that all of you have done. I also encourage those who have been really engaged in their project to apply for the County Award in that project. It is almost time to start re-enrolling in all of the great projects that 4-H offers and this year Glacier County has been selected to be part of a new 4-H online registration program. We will be getting the information out to you as soon as we receive our training on it (September 18th). The new Clover magazines are available with all of the projects in them and you should take a few minutes to see if there are areas that you would like to explore through 4-H that you haven t taken before. One of the areas that I would encourage some of our older 4-Hers to explore is the teen leadership project. This is a great project to be able to meet new friends and do fun activities. It also provides the opportunity to travel and help be an ambassador for 4-H if you choose. Speaking of ambassadors, there is an exciting avenue for teen leaders to learn about how to spread the word about 4-H and that is by attending Ambassador Fall training in Fairmont Hot Springs. This training will be an exciting, hands-on experience which will teach you leadership and communication skills needed to be an active county ambassador. The weekend will also include fun social activities: swimming, games, dances, a formal dinner, and entertainment. If you would like to attend this fun training contact the office and we will make it happen. Be sure to check out the information in this newsletter. If you would like to learn a new skill and meet new friends, or just do great things with your friends, then collaborate on some exciting 4-H projects this next year and do them as a club. Hope to see all of you soon! Damon Bunting Glacier County Extension Agent Thought for the Month: Take time to recharge your batteries, it s hard to see where you re going when your lights are dim. 4 H Enrollment The State 4-H office has determined that the current enrollment program isn t meeting the needs of our families and offices. This year, the State office is piloting two new programs. At the end of the year one of the programs will be selected for the entire state to use. The Marias Fair counties have been asked to pilot a program called 4-H Online. This program will actually give families the ability to enroll online and not have to turn in all that paperwork. It also has several other features that will make communication among members, leaders, families and the Extension office much more convenient. The Extension staff is receiving training for the program on September 18th, so we won t be able to provide enrollment material until early October. The good news is that the process shouldn t take nearly as long this year! 2012 Montana Leadership Forum Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Envisioning the Possibilities September 28-29, 2012 Holiday Inn Grand Billings, MT This is an exciting opportunity for new and veteran leaders alike to learn more about the 4-H program and enhance competencies in Positive Youth Development. 6 2012 MONTANA MAKE IT WITH WOOL CONTEST It is time to start preparing for the Make It With Wool contest to be held this Fall. Get out your favorite pattern and start hunting for that perfect wool fabric. Wouldn t it be great to make a wool outfit for the contest this Fall and then already have an outfit finished for your sewing project this next 4-H year? The fabric needs to be a minimum of 60% wool to qualify for the MIWW contest. Wool can be purchased at Hancock Fabrics, JoAnn Fabrics, Denver Fabrics (internet), Fabricsupplier (internet), sewing magazines, Mohair Council of America, or from Jean Harrison, Montana State MIWW Director. Make It With Wool Contestants in Glacier County enter and participate in the District 3 contest which is scheduled for November 10th in Great Falls. There is a $4.00 Montana entry fee per swatch of fabric used. These funds will cover the cost of testing your fabric for content. The categories are Preteen (12 and under); Junior (13-16); Senior (17-24); Adult (age 25 and older); and Made for Others. Preteens may enter a dress, jumper, skirt, pants, shorts, vest, sweater, shirt/blouse, jacket, or a combination of garments. Juniors, Seniors, Adults, and Made for Others may enter a One-piece garment such as a dress, jumper, outerwear jacket, coat or cape; a Twopiece garment such as a coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest or sweater with a dress, jumper, skirt, pants, or shorts; an Ensemble (3 or more garments worn together at one time) such as a coat, jacket, cape, blouse/shirt, vest, and/or sweater with dress, jumper, skirt, pants, or shorts. First place winners in all categories advance to the State competition which will be held during the Montana Wool Growers Convention held in Billings on November 30th and December 1st.
