3 Top News Eads Lady Ea gles Are Headed to State for the First Time Since 2009 By Betsy Barnett The Eads Lady Ea gles met a big chal lenge over the week end as they marched through their bracket in the Re gion 3 tour na ment at Massari Arena on the cam pus of CSU-P on Fri day and Sat - ur day qual i fy ing for the 1A Girls State Bas ket ball Tour na ment to be held March at the 1st Bank Cen ter in Broom - field, CO. The Eads Girls (17-5) are ranked #6 and will face off in the quarterfinals on Thurs - day at 5:30 against the third seated Caliche Buf - fa los (20-3). Kim #2 and Idalia #7 are on the Eads side of the bracket. Norwood is the top seed and has the best re cord of any team in the tournament. At the Re gion 3 Tour na - ment the Eads group plowed through the Dis - trict 6 con tend ers in dom - i nat ing fash ion with a win over Cotopaxi in the semi fi nals on Fri day night; and a vic tory over higher seeded Cen - ten nial on Sat ur day night. The big ger Ea gles dom - i nated Cotopaxi from the get-go as their in side-out - side game was fir ing on all cylinders behind the post play from the Twin Tow ers Marisa Dixon (6 0) and Tanaia Hansen (6 1); and the hot shoot ing from wing player Hailey Ray who hit a deuce and trey early in the game. By the end of one pe riod Eads was in dom i nant con trol, The Lady Ea gles con tin ued to take over the game into the sec ond with guard Brittanie Newman and Kailyn Lane con trol ling the ac tion along with con - tin ued strong play from Hansen and Dixon. By the in ter mis sion Eads was in con trol Al though the Ea gles used their bench lib er ally through - out the sec ond half they con tin ued to out score the frus trated Lady Pi rates. Ten of the twelve Lady Ea gles ended up in the book as they fin ished with a good solid per for mance; and, more im por tantly, fresh legs for their Sat ur - day af ter noon meet ing with Dis trict League champions and #3 seeded Centennial. Eads did n t know any - thing about Cen ten nial but soon saw that they were very lit tle and pretty quick and their whole MO was to press full court the en tire game. The pres - sure did n t bother the Eads start ers too much as they used their dom i - nat ing size to pound the ball in side against the much smaller Cen ten nial girls. Lane and Ray did a great job open ing up the in side by forc ing the de - fense out on them at the per im e ter by hit ting 13 points be tween them in the first half. Hansen con - trolled the in side while Dixon found her self in a lit tle bit of early foul trou - ble. By halftime Eads was in con trol They would ex tend that lead in the third pe riod as the Eads de fense nearly shut down the Cen ten nial shoot ers while the Lady Ea gles en joyed 17 points from Newman, Dorian Ray, Lane, Hansen, and fresh man post Brook lyn Lenox. It was all but over af ter three as Eads used their bench through out the fourth. A slight flurry of steals and layups by Cen ten nial at the very end of the game got them closer than the score really indicates. In the Cotopaxi game it was all The Tow ers in the scor ing de part ment as Dixon led the way with 23 points fol lowed by Hansen with 16 more. How ever, the Cen ten nial game brought out the best in the Eads guards as Lane led the way with 14 points. Hansen and Dixon would tack on 13 and 9 more apiece. Soph o - more power for ward Eboni Nash was a nice sur prise for Eads dom i - nat ing down low and hit - ting for four buckets. Good luck to the Eads Lady Ea gles as they head to the front-range to rep - re sent Ea gle Na tion at the 1A State Bas ket ball Tour na ment. It has been since 2009 that Eads has had the op por tu nity to play for the cov eted gold ball. Back row: Dorian Ray, Tori Uhland. Eb ony Nash, Brooke Lenox, Marisa Dixon. Kailyn Ray, Tanaia Hanson, Hailey Ray, Shyanne Sewell, Chelsea Crosby. Front Row: Brittanie Newman, Sa vanna Gyurman, Dena Hallman, Abby McDowell, Mi cah Crawford, Man ager. We are glad to have Nicole back in Eads be cause she works as a C.N.A. at Weisbrod Nurs ing Home when she can at tend ballgames when she is not babysitting. Nicole made an amaz ing amount of NOISE cheer ing with the cheer - lead ers at the Dis trict Bas - ket ball play-offs in Lamar. By her side was one of her cheer lead ing team mates, Shealynn McCracken. These girls were ded i cated Eads Cheer lead ers for sev - eral years and now both are stu dents at LCC. We ap pre - ci ate ded i cated Ea gle Fans. Marlynn Eickenberg of Haswell had a great time when she was in vited to go on a Ca rib bean Cruise with her friend and for mer schoolmate, Sarah Ferris. One of Sa rah s sis ters who had planned to go on the fam ily cruise was n t able to go, so Marlynn felt blessed to be in vited. She told us that it was a blast, the meals were just ter rific and so was the en ter tain ment and all the beauty of the is - lands. They did n t get to see one is land be cause the ocean was too tur bu lent. Marlynn is a C.N.A. and as - sis tant to Yonda Leon ard in the Activity Department. She is a real bless ing to the res i dents and oth ers who visit at the nurs ing home. Marlynn said that Sa rah s son, Brandon and wife; Tabitha Fer ris of Eads also en joyed the cruise with fam ily mem bers. As we watched or lis tened to the Lady Ea gles bas ket - ball game at Re gional Tour - na ment at the Col o rado State University-Pueblo Massri Gym, last Fri day, we were pleased that the girls scored so highly that all the team mates had much more play ing time in the 65 to 34 game with the Cotapaxi team. The Lady Ea gles were victorious on Saturday when they played Cen ten - nial from the San Luis Val - ley. Next they travel to the Colorado State Tournament at Broom field where they have a chance to play three days. Thanks to the KVAY and KLMR ra dio sta tions out of Lamar who car ried all the ballgames both days be - cause many lo cal busi - nesses paid spon sor ships. As the weath er man pre - dicted Sat ur day, we had some snow and a lot of blow ing wind and dust. Thus the Eads and Kit Car - son girls had to stay over in Pueblo for their safety. Jan Rich ards was in Pueblo Thurs day for a med i - cal ap point ment and to get sup plies for the KCDEF An - nual Din ner Meet ing on Mon day, March 25th. How - ever best of all, she was able to see her new grand - son, born to Shawn and Jamie (Lane) Kraft. His par - ents are stu dents at CSU-Pueblo. The Eads Ea gle Base ball team has been prac tic ing each eve ning. They ex pect stu dents to come from Kit Car son and Plainview Schools to join the team. The first games will be March 21 and 22 dur ing Spring Break. Let us thank the Eads Consumer Supply Company board mem bers. They are Mike Weirich, Barry Koch, Chad Rouse, Randy Car ney, and Jeff Salis bury. Mike and Barry were lean ing over a pick-up wait ing for a man to come who was 45 min utes late for their com mit tee meet ing. When I asked them when the An nual meet ing would be, they re - plied prob a bly in April af ter the Au dit of the com pany is com pleted. We surely do appreciate both shops, the me chan i cal and farm sup - ply store and the C-Store, on High way 96 and 287 who serve hun dreds of cus - tom ers each day. He was ac com pa nied by Cory Crow on elec tric gui tar and Phil Pollreis on acous tic gui - tar with Syl via Weeks and Penny McPherson lead ing the songs. This was fol - lowed by a pot luck sup per. Teresa Witte also added some tasty cas se roles and bis cuits. Linda Watts, Ad - min is tra tor was glad to have her par ents, Ron and Joyce Howard of Arap aho, came for the afternoon festivities. The award win ning film Argo was shown at the Plains Thea tre last week - end. This was in deed a fine movie based on the true hap pen ings of six Amer i can cit i zens and how they were hid den in the Ca na dian Em - bassy for a long, long time and how just a few Amer i - can men were able to plan their es cape back to Amer - ica af ter an Mus lim up ris ing against the United States.
