3 Top News Eads Ea gles Beat Ed i son in First Home Game By Rhonda Uhland If any one was n t at the ball field in Eads on Fri - day night I m sure that if they were lis ten ing close enough you could hear the sounds of the tack les as Eads lit up the Ed i son Ea gles and ran away with the game, The Boys are Back in Town! Once again the Ea gles are shar ing the field with the Wild cats from Kit Car - son and com bined they should be a team that will give op po nents ev ery - thing they can han dle. Fin ish ing in the Top 4 last year los ing to Flem ing and only los ing one se nior to grad u a tion, the Ea gles should once again be ranked among the best in their class. Fri day night ac tion was the first of good things to come. Cap tains for the game, Blaine Winder and Troy Miller, won the flip but elected to kick the ball off to start the game. Ed i son came out strong and on the first drive down the field man aged to push in a 2-yard touch down run by Binkley-Jones. Justin Lenox was able to block the PAT (Points af ter touch down) kick. Eads an swered back driv ing down the field and scor ing on a 10-yard pass from Lenox to Lo gan Crawford and Crawford booted it through the up - rights for the ex tra 2 and Eads led, 8-6. Start ing off on the Ed i - son 15 yard line, Blaine Winder tack led in the back field for a 10 yard loss and Crawford added his own tackle for -5 and Eads was scor ing again with a safety. Ed i son s free kick from the 15-yard line put Eads in pretty good po si - tion for their next se ries start ing out on the Ed i son 36. Winder got the handoff and ran all 36 yards for his first TD of the sea son and the ex tra point was scored when Troy Miller found big John Mitchek in the endzone thus ex tend - ing the score, Eads - 17, Edison - 6. In short or der, Ed i son was hand ing off to Will Hill top and he rushed 59 yards to score and Justin Law son was kick ing through the goal posts get ting Ed i son back into the game. Driv ing down the field to the 1 yard line, Lenox handed off to Troy Miller for a 1-yard TD run but Eads was un able to put up the ex tra points. Ed i son was not giv ing up eas ily and on the kick off re turn Gary Garnhart rushed for a 74-yard TD and Law son added an other 2 with the PAT. This ended the 1st quar ter; Eads -23, Ed i son 22, but Ed i son had scored their last points of the night. Eads pounded on the visiting Eagles at this point and with ev ery pos - ses sion came away with a touch down. Alberto Gutierrez scored first with a 51-yard TD and Crawford came away with the PAT. Lo gan Crawford in ter cepted a pass on the Ed i son 15-yard line and ran it in for his TD but Jose Ramos was un able to kick through the up - rights on the PAT. Gutierrez scored his 2nd TD of the night on a 31-yard scam per down the field and Ramos at - tempt at the ex tra 2 was no good. Gutierrez was again given the ball for a 30-yard touch down run and this time Ramos put it through the goal posts. Go ing in at half-time the score read: Eads -51, Edison 22. Eads re ceived the kick - off to start the 2nd half and 1st play out was Gutierrez to the end zone from 39-yards out. Ramos PAT was good. Ed i son s next pos ses - sion, Jose Ramos in - ter cepted the ball on the Ed i son 37 and ran it back to the 10-yard line. Eads was pushed back 5-yards on a pen alty and Lenox went to Ramos in the air for a 15-yard TD pass and Ramos put the ic ing on his touch down kick ing in the 2 extra. Go ing loss of downs Ed i - son was forced to punt and first play out Tay lor Weirich was rush ing for his 39-yard touch down. Ramos again put the PAT through. Nicolle Lenox Photo Ed i son s next drive re - sulted in a fum ble, re cov - ered by Weirich, which led to a 15-yard TD run by Chris Rigsby. The PAT was un suc cess ful. Ed i son did get an other shot at the ball but was forced to punt and Eads let the clock run out win - ning their first game of the sea son, Eads will have a busy week with the Ki owa County Fair ac tiv i ties and ac tion against Deer Trail start ing at the high school with Ju nior High Girls in the gym at 4:00 p.m., Ju - nior High Boy s on the field at 4:00 p.m., High School Girls Vol ley ball start ing at 5:30 and the High School Boy s fol low - ing at 7:30 p.m. Fair Bash 5K Run/Walk and Dance in Eads on Sat ur day By Betsy Barnett The Ki owa County Fair Board and Crow-Lu ther Cul tural Events Cen ter will be host ing a 5K fun run/walk at the Jack son s Pond Wild life area in Eads, Col o rado on Sat ur - day morn ing, Sep tem ber 10th in con junc tion with the Ki owa County Fair & Ro deo. Mi - chael Bennet urged Pres - i dent Barack Obama to fi - nal ize and im ple ment the U.S. De part ment of Ag ri - cul ture s Grain In spec - tion, Pack ers and Stock - yards Ad min is tra tion s (GIPSA) pro posed rule. This is the same rule that Col o rado beef pro duc ers have re sound ingly stated time and time again is un - ac cept able due to the egregious limitations that the rule would dic tate on how the beef in dus try con ducts its sale transactions for livestock. It co mes with great sur prise that Sen. Bennet is en cour ag ing the pas - sage of this in dus try- crip - pling rule considering the vast majority of Colorado beef pro duc ers have com - mu ni cated their op po si - tion to the rule s pas - sage, stated Da vid Mendenhall, Pres i dent for the Col o rado Cat tle - men s Association (CCa). CCA mem bers have per - son ally met with Sen. Bennet and tes ti fied in front of Con gress clar i fy - ing the por tions of the rule that will limit the free mar ket and en tre pre - neur ial abil ity to all pro - ducers, specifically small pro duc ers. To this end, CCA requests Sen. Bennet reconsider his position. CCA would once again like to ad dress the sig nif i - cant con cerns raised by the pro posed rule re gard - ing live stock and poul try mar ket ing prac tices. CCA s pol icy states that na tional ag ri cul ture pol - icy should be ori ented to a free, pri vate en ter prise com pet i tive mar ket sys - tem. CCA mem bers firmly be lieve that pri vate en ter prise al ter na tives in mar ket ing and risk man - age ment should be de vel - oped and en cour aged as the pre ferred alternative to government programming. In their pro posed rul - ing, GIPSA will re quire that all mar ket ing con - tracts be posted for pub lic re view and GIPSA re view of fair ness. This takes away the ba sic Amer i can busi ness tenet of a will ing buyer and will ing seller en gag ing in a pri vate busi ness trans ac tion. The beef in dus try has worked hard to put in place mar - ket ing al li ances and al ter - na tive mar ket ing ar - range ments (AMAs) to better serve the de mands of our con sum ers, while get ting paid for the value be ing put on our cat tle. This would se verely hinder, if not destroy, those programs. GIPSA considers mar - ket ing ar range ments based on vol ume or pre - mi ums for qual ity as po - tentially showing undue pref er ence. This is an - other hit to pro duc ers abil ity to en ter into an AMA. In other words, pro - duc ers who spend con sid - er able time and en ergy im prov ing their herd s ge - net ics and pro duc tion ef fi - cien cies will be pun ished, while mar ginal cat tle will be re warded in or der to establish a fairness factor. Even in GIPSA s own study, they found that a ma jor ity of cat tle are mar - keted through tra di tional cash mar ket means. The study showed that AMAs such as for ward con - tracts, pro duc tion con - tracts, packer own er ship, or cus tom feed ing have pro vided ben e fits to some pro duc ers with out harm - ing the com pet i tive ness of the marketplace. The study also showed that pro duc ers are able to mar ket their live stock in dif fer ent ways and can see the eco nomic ben e - fits, all while main tain ing a strong vi a ble cash mar - ket. 13 Government & Commentary Com mis sion ers Cor ner By Dick Scott The 122 mile stretch of rail from Towner to the North Avon dale Junc tion out east of Pueblo- The Towner Line- is reach ing a very crit i cal stage. VS Rail road will make their fi nal pay ment for this line to CDOT in Dec of 2011 and will own and con trol it. In for ma tion from CDOT in di cates the in - tent of VS is to dis man tle the rails and sell them as rails or as scrap metal. CDOT does have an op - tion to buy the rail back be fore it is torn up if VS does op tion to scrap the line. CDOT may or may not ex er cise that op tion. One thing al most cer tain is that if these rails are ever phys i cally re moved, they will be gone for ever and the like li hood of a new rail ever be ing built is not even remotely likely. The Col o rado Gen eral As sem bly and the US Con gress found great need to pre serve this line back in 1998 when Un ion Pa cific took it over. The va lid ity of this need may be even greater to day than it was then. This is what the 61st Col o rado Gen eral As sem bly stated in their leg is la tion to pre - serve The Towner Line: Aban don ment of the Towner Rail road Line and re moval of the rail - road tracks from that line would re sult in the per - ma nent loss of that line. The loss of the Towner Line would se verely im - pair the ac cess of the south east ern por tion of Colorado to commercial rail trans por ta tion. The per ma nent loss of the Towner Line would dam - age the econ omy and harm the cit i zens of Col o - rado, as well as jeop ar - dize the con tin ued vi a bil - ity and phys i cal con di tion of other trans por ta tion in - fra struc ture of the state. It is ben e fi cial to the cit i - zens of Colorado that the Towner Line be preserved. Freight rails- in clud ing the Towner Line- need to be pre served and uti lized be cause (1) they of fer ma - jor ad van tages in en ergy ef fi ciency over other modes; (2) they of fer a huge ad van tage in friend - li ness to the en vi ron ment; (3) they can be a ma jor con trib u tor to re duced high way con ges tion and (4) they of fer major advantages in safety. It seems fea si ble that the 20 to 30 trains that trav eled this line daily be - fore it was shut down could once again travel at or near that same rate. The loss of the Towner Line has cost Ki owa County at least $6.5 Mil - lion in lost rev e nue. This line could once again con trib ute greatly to an im proved grain mar - ket for the area. It could very well open the door to new value added crop mar kets to the west coast. The Towner Line it self is an ex am ple of a value added prod uct it would not take a lot to have it op - er a tional again. The Con gres sio nal Bud - get Of fice 2006 study on Freight Rail and Trans - por ta tion Long Term Is - sues clearly in di cates a de mand for more rail, not LESS. The Commissioners of Ki owa and Crowley coun - ties, the 61st Col o rado Gen eral As sem bly, the US Con gress and the Con - gres sio nal Bud get Of fice find ings would be di a met - ri cally op posed to clos ing the Towner Line. Rather than clos ing it we should be fig ur ing out how to make it operable again! Cit i zen ad vo cacy is an ef fec tive per sua sion. If you want to sup port pre - serv ing this rail, let your State Rep re sen ta tives and Sen a tors know.
