3 Top News Wres tlers Winder and Lenox Headed to State Meet By Rhonda Uhland I of ten won der what goes through the mind of a wres tler as he steps on the mat ready to face his op po nent. Af ter all these are the men that were just stand ing in the hall - ways vis it ing with each other, or walk ing si lently back and forth meet ing one an other with a stone faced glance. I m sure there is a re spect for each other; a need of in ti ma - tion of some form to get the up per hand when they do meet each other face-to-face. It seems like there is a calm si lence as they pace get ting fo cused or they dance from foot to foot get ting warmed up. What ever it is it be comes a par ents only thought, be cause they know that when their son gets on the mat it could be six com plete min utes or it could be over in a mat ter of a few sec onds and what ever it turns out to be it s like they don t take a breath un til the match is over. I ve seen par ents that pay to get in to watch and cover their eyes the whole time the match is be ing wres tled. It is ex - haust ing. Why would sons want to do this to their par ents? I fig ure the re - Eads to Hold Mu nic i pal Elec tion By Dawna Peck The Eads Mu nic i pal Elec tion will be held on Tues day, April 3, Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There are 3 4-year Trustee po si tions and 1 4-year Mayor po si tion open this elec tion. Nomination petitions can be picked up now at City Hall, 110 W. 13th St., Blaine Winder 138# 2nd place Re gion 4 fin isher. (Nicolle Lenox Photo) wards they achieve on Fri day as he wres tled outweigh anything else. Torres from Manzanola Blake Rob ert son, his first match. Torres is a Blaine Winder, Rob ert re turn ing state con - Miller and Justin Lenox tender and he had the ad - rep re sented Eads to the very best of their abil i ties van tage with ex pe ri ence giving Robertson his first in the re gional tour na - loss in 1:52. Rob ert son ment held in La Junta then chal lenged this past week end. At the Chenoweth from Baca con clu sion of the event Blaine Winder fin ished in County and with a 2nd pe - riod pin found him self 2nd place and Justin elim i nated from the tour - Lenox was the Re gional na ment. Rob ert son Cham pion ad vanc ing ended the sea son with a them to the State Tour na - ment next week to be held at the Pepsi Cen ter in re cord and showed so much im prove ment from his last sea son. This Den ver start ing on soph o more will be anx - Thursday. ious for next year and Blake Rob ert son with his hard work in the started things off for Eads off sea son should be among the best next year. Get ting cleared to wres - tle late in the sea son Rob - ert Miller wres tled for Eads in the 170 pound weight di vi sion and al - and have to be re turned to City Hall by 5:00 p.m. Fri day, March 2, This will be a poll ing place elec tion so you ei - ther have to go to the polls to vote or re quest an ab - sen tee bal lot. To re quest an ab sen tee bal lot or if you have any ques tions please con tact the Town Clerk s of fice at (719) though he went two and out he was a com pet i tor and Eads should be proud of his de sire to com pete. Miller lost to the Collin Sires from Baca County by pin and lost by de ci sion to Ev ans from Ki owa, 7-1. Miller is only a soph o - more so he has two years left of wres tling com pe ti - tion and has the po ten tial for some great things. Justin Lenox HWT Re gion 4 Cham pion. (Nicolle Lenox Photo) Blaine Winder likes to keep things very in ter est - ing while he is on the mat as Wills from Ki owa got the first takedown and three near-fall points be - fore Winder had him re - versed and was get ting his own 5 points. Wills was flat in 2:34 and Winder was ad vanc ing to the semis against Westphal from Baca County. This is not the first time these two have met and with each match this year Winder has been awarded the win. This match turned out the same but for about 5 min utes and trail ing 8-1 it re ally did n t look like it was pos si ble. Westphal was com fort - able with his lead and was con tent to let the clock run out but Winder re al - ized it was now or never and went for the takedown putt ing Westphal on his back and get ting the pin in 5:13, ad - vanc ing him to the cham - pi on ship match. Kappel from Limon had up set the num ber 1 seed in the bracket so Winder was head-to-head with him. It went the com plete six min utes but Winder found him self down, 7-12 and fin ish ing the re gional tour na ment with a 2nd place fin ish. He will go into state with a re - cord and will be wres tling Dal ton Randolph from Dove Creek for his first match on Thursday. Justin Lenox had pos si - bly the best tour na ment of his ca reer as he beat two wres tlers that had beaten him ear lier in the sea son and had three pins for the day. Helms from Rocky Ford went down in 5:02; then he got re venge over Long from Burlington with a pin in 3:13. His cham pi on ship match was the last match wres tled and it was worth the wait. He faced Gray from Crowley County who is a re turn ing state placer and had beaten him twice this sea son. Af ter the first pe riod Gray was lead ing by one point. Al most im - pos si ble to hold down, Lenox chose to go bot tom to start the 2nd and it paid off as he was re vers ing the Charger to his back and in 3:08 the ref was slap ping the mat. Lenox will be start ing the state tour na ment with a 27-5 re cord and his ac tion will start up against Axel Long from Burlington on Thursday. February 17, 2012 KiowaCountyPress.com 3

5 About Town Do ris Lessenden and Me lissa Pe ter son Here is an other quote from a Max and Donna Owen De velop a forgiving attitude (most peo - ple are do ing the best they can). At the ball game, Tim Weeks proudly showed me a cell phone photo of Dee and Samantha Week s new - born girl, Pais ley Ma rie. So Tim and Syl via and Allen Wade and Ma rie Watts all of Eads are proud grand par - ents again. Our sin cere sym pa thy goes out to Pas tor Galen Bur nett and their three adult chil dren in the loss of his wife and their mother. Mary Bea (Moyer) was the youn gest child of the Ritchie sib lings: Valoris, Charlotte, Richard, Arnitha, Bonita, San dra, and broth - ers, Duane, Rich ard, and Jerry Ritchie. Her fu neral was in Lamar and the fu - neral din ner was at the Eads United Meth od ist Church with burial in Eads. The fine folk at this same church, hosted the fu neral and din ner at their church for Scott Bowen of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We sin cerely sympathize with Melody Com mu nity Life and her three adult chil dren in the loss of Scott who died from complications of cancer. Both Mary and Scott were for mer mem bers of the Chivington Friends Church. Our con do lences are given to his sis ter, Mar ga ret Beth (Roy) Laughlin and brother, Chuck (Sherri) Bowen. Cardon and Joyce Berry and Terry Riley were strug - gling to clean a ga rage Mon - day to pre pare a stor age place to un load a truck of thea tre chairs, when a class of FFA boys came to help. In 20 min utes the young men cleared all the space. The CLECE group appreciates all the help that the FFA Chap ter lends their hands to in or der to as sist com mu - nity groups with pro jects. When I vis ited the Nurs - ing Home Fri day af ter noon, the la dies were play ing Horse shoe (plas tic) with the help of fifth and third grad ers, Molly and Chase Stolzenberger. They of ten do volunteering along with Nya Mor gan on week ends. Bless their gen er ous hearts. It was fun to watch them count out the coins and hand horse shoes to the res i - dents. One res i dent told me that her hus band had metal horse shoe stakes in their yard. One night, some Lamar po lice men were chasing some criminals who drove into Eads and into their yard near the Eads rail road tracks and got hung-up on the stakes. They were caught! So it shows, Crime just does n t pay. We ex tend our sin cere sympathy to Stephanie Buck and her daugh ters and other fam i lies in the loss of her mother, El ea nor Grasmick. At the bas ket ball games, Nicole Smith, flau tist, and Alicia James, vo cal ist fa - vored the crowds by per - form ing the Star Span gled Ban ner. Thurs day night the cheer lead ers per formed a neat rou tine, Foot loose. The Soph o more class has been hav ing half pot draw - ings this year at ball games. When Nancy Walker won Thurs day night, she sud - denly gained a lot of stu dent friends. Happy Birth day to Arlene Rehm who had a card shower and birth day party in Chey enne Manor. It was nice that some of her grand - chil dren were able to come home to visit their par ents, Chris and Gary Rehm and Aunt Cheryl. Jas per, is it true you built your cabin with only an ax? Jas per nod ded. Aren t axes kinda hard to get used to? Herb asked. Some times an ax gets downright peculiar, Jas - per said, slathering two inches of straw berry jam on his toast. Now you boys re mem ber ol John Buekers from Ohio, right? Came to visit a while back? He told me a story about just such an ax. Jas per sucked down some more cof fee and looked out the win dow to see if Ar thur was okay in the pickup truck. He was. 10 Eads Boys on a Win ning Streak By Betsy Barnett When you win two games in a row that is a called a win ning streak; and the Eads boys are of - fi cially on their first one of the sea son as they had a great week end of bas ket - ball downing South Baca, 56-52, on Thurs day night in Eads and then hand ing a solid de feat to Cheraw on Fri day night at home, Eads is now 3-13 on the over all sea son but things are look ing up for the group who con tin ues to im prove each week. To be suc cess ful in bas - ket ball a team has to have a point guard that is will - ing to take on the bur den of run ning the ball against con stant pres - sure and to put in the ex - tra time and ef fort re - quired to be ef fec tive. Eads has fi nally found their point guard and this fact alone is pay ing off in div i dends for the de - feat-bur dened team. The as sign ment has been given to fresh man Ty ler Rouse and through out the sea son Rouse has con tin ued to im prove as he has been thrown in the fire again and again go ing up against much more ex - pe ri enced and stron ger play ers. But Rouse has not given up and con tin - ues to im prove and thus the Ea gles are im prov ing as well. With Rouse run - ning the ball and tak ing the bulk of the re spon si - bil ity on his shoul ders it has al lowed other key play ers to play in po si - tions that are more suited to their abilities and thus we are seeing some success. The young Rouse had the game of his life against South Baca as he led Eads to a shock ing four-point vic tory against a much-fa vored team. The fresh man would fin - ish with 23 points. Eads showed they were ready to play at the start of this game as they matched point-for-point with the Pa tri ots knot ting the score af ter one, 9-9. The Ea gles would then lose post-man Cory Miller to an an kle in jury mid way through the sec ond pe - riod but would pick up the tempo be hind a three ball from Rouse and an other by Lo gan Smith. Rouse fig ured out in the sec ond quar ter that he could drive against the Pa tri ots and thus be gan to open up the game from the free throw line. By halftime Eads had a lead. In the third pe riod Eads got most of their pro duc tion from Rouse on the free throw line and also a tran - si tion jumper. Ju nior for - ward Lo gan Crawford would add to the Ea gle tally with four more points and Eads con tin - ued to ex tend their lead af ter the third, Things got a lit tle fran tic in the fi nal stanza as South Baca turned up the heat in their man-to-man de fense and at times Eads would lose their com po sure. But Rouse would not be de nied and kept driv ing in on the Pa - tri ots which re sulted in even more free throw points. Eads had to con - trol the ball to the end and did a good job of finishing this contest. Rouse led all scor ers with 23 points, a ca reer high; while Crawford and Kyle Crow each chipped in 8 coun ters apiece. The next night the Eads boys hosted Cheraw in an im por tant Dis trict 2 game and came away with a strong performance scor - ing a phe nom e nal 70 points in the game and gain ing the edge over Cheraw by more than 25 at var i ous points in the con test. Rouse again had a great game hav ing con - stant scor ing through out the game and lead ing the Ea gles to a num ber of im - pres sive as sists and takes. An other player fi - nally stepped up to his po - ten tial in the two-guard spot in the form of Kyle Crow who had a ca reer high 29 points on the night. In fact, with play ers in their nat u ral po si tions the Eads boys looked like a dif fer ent team as they all con trib uted to the big win and score. Crow would start strong and con fi dent and along with Smith con trolled the scor - ing in the first pe riod. Eads would lead 13-7 af - ter the first over the Wol - ver ines and would never look back. Crow s per for - mance was a bal ance of three-point shoot ing, takes to the bas ket, and go ing 9-for-13 from the free throw line. Cheraw strug gled in the first half against Eads large zone scor ing only 15 points while the Ea gles en joyed pro duc tion across the po - si tions with 28 points. The third pe riod was the best NEAL MANN Cell: (785) FARM & RANCH REALTY, INC. The Wol ver ines pulled out all the stops hit ting for 26 points and four three balls; but Eads would answer with 20 of their own ensuring no chance for a Cheraw comeback. Crow led all scor ers with 29 points while Smith con trib uted 16 and Rouse 14 to the Ea gle tally. 17 Southeast Area Ex ten sion Says En joy Din ner Together By Jennifer Wells Do you wish your fam ily could slow down long enough to all be at home at the same time? One op - por tu nity would be to or - ga nize a fam ily meal time into your rou tine. The idea of gath er ing the fam ily to gether in the same place at the same time may seem im pos si - ble for many, but it can be done. It may be not ev ery day of the week. If your fam ily is not sit ting down now to eat a meal to - gether set a goal of once or twice a week to get started. As the op por tu - nity arises add ad di tional days. So why is eat ing to - gether so im por tant? Fam ily mem bers tend to eat better if they are gath - ered to gether, which can gen er ally be at trib uted to im proved meal plan ning. Other ben e fits in clude im - proved communication, a time to build fam ily tra di - tions, a way to learn about your her i tage, and a time for par ents to model good hab its to name a few. There has also been re - search to show that chil - dren do better in school and there is re duce drug and al co hol use among youth at are involved in family mealtime. The nu tri tional ad van - tages for chil dren in fam - ily meal time are sig nif i - cant. Chil dren who eat fam ily meals con sume less soda and high-fat snacks, and eat more fruits and veg e ta bles and a larger va ri ety of foods. Meals are better bal - anced when plans are made for a meal, thus ev - ery one benefits. You may not think you have time to plan a meal; it does not need to be dif fi - cult. If you have a slow cooker start it in the morn ing be fore you leave for the day and it will be Con tin ued on page 19 Pub lic No tice BOARD OF KIOWA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS At the reg u lar sched uled meet ings of the Board of County Com mis sion - ers held on Jan u ary 10, 2012 and Jan u ary 26, 2012, the fol low ing were pres ent: Rich ard Scott, Chair man; Don ald Oswald, Com mis sioner; Wil - liam E.
