1 WBV Pickleball Club 1 March 2014 Volume 2 Issue 3 Newsletter WBV Pickleball Club Board & Committee Directors President s Corner by Ken Macumber Ken Macumber President Bob Waller-Vice President Margie Newman-Treasurer Lori McConnell- Secretary Jack & Carol Kotek- Membership John Bauernfeind- Tournaments Maria Macumber-Social Liz Lage Training Candace Isherwood- Publicity Club Playing Hours: all Groups Every morning 7:30-10AM Wed. Eve. 6:30-9:45 PM Mon. Social Time 6:00 PM Every afternoon 3-5 PM Ladder Play. Advanced Thurs. 6:30 PM Intermediate Sat. 8:00 AM Novice Wed. 5:00 PM We are in the full swing of things now. The beginners are coming in steady and the ladders are growing by leaps and bounds. We are back up to 285 members as of this date. Just a reminder that the card swiping computer seems to be working fine now, so please let s all be vigilant and every time you come to play make it a habit to stop in the Rec.Center office and swipe your Id card. The back gate will be left open so we can come and go into the Rec. Center from the courts. It isn t an option, so might as well get used to it. We are supposed to be monitors of our club, but we don t want to be card cops, so please do it on your own. On Ladder days and Tournament days, if all members would bring their cards to the check in station, then we will have someone go scan them all at one time. We will have a shade structure completed before long. We will be advised as to when it is on the agenda. On body re-buildings: Dianne Doerschel just went through a knee replacement. To those that are new with us, Dianne is the wife of former President Robert and one of the founders of the WBV Pickleball Club and past Secretary. Robert tells me that the surgery went well and hopefully she can get back to pickleball soon. They finally closed on their 2nd home in Seattle after a year in the process. New Players Training Wednesday 5:00 PM Starting Jan. 8th Call Editor Candace Isherwood Information contact : Ken Macumber, Pres , kenmacumber@cox.net, Margie Newman, Treasurer
2 2 V. President Please remember to go to the Vistas Rec center to SCAN YOUR I D card each time you play pickleball. You may do this before or after you play. It is important because the WBV Board members will be looking at the number of participants in each area and will give financial support to the organization/ activities that show the greatest numbers. by Bob Waller INTERMEDIATE B LADDER Since spring is arriving and the days are longer and getting warmer, we will be starting the ladder earlier. The last 8 teams on the Schedule will start playing their games at 8:00 a.m. and so they will need to arrive earlier. The remainder of the teams at the top of the schedule will begin their games as the courts become vacated- approximately 8:50 to 9:15 a.m. Social Director Ninety members and guests attended our February Party. Because we are a fun Club, WBV Pickleball Parties have been very popular. The food was great, and the dessert was outstanding. The March Party will be on 3/16/2014. Chicken and sausage jambalaya with red beans and rice will be our main entre. Our members will prepare and bring many other special dishes. You are invited, and please sign up via the WBV Pickleball website. by Maria Macumber

4 WBV Pickleball Club 4 Training by Liz Lage MONDAY CLINICS - Dave Moore sends a message to all Intermediate players that the clinic's final lesson/formal presentation is this Monday, March 3. After that, he will continue showing up on Monday at 5:00 -- hopefully with other Advanced volunteers -- for drills and match play. The Intermediate Clinic will end on April 21. Everyone who had attended any of Dave's lessons has benefited from his teaching Pickleball skills and strategies. We all Thank Dave and his Advanced Skill Level members for their help and we look forward to these lessons again in the future. TRAINING PROGRAM Then 3 free lessons are offered on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. We have the new people sign the WBV Waiver, a PB Application form for our club and we give them a Welcome Letter and a copy of the Clubs Playing Schedule. We have been teaching many new members this month. Our membership is now at 280. My thanks to those who have been helping instruct them: R C Young, Jack Kotek, and Ken Macumber. If you would be interested in helping us teach, please contact Liz. COACH MO HAS AN INTERNET SITE FOR PICKLEBALL- Here are his 10 ways to guarantee that YOU WILL LOSE more Pickleball games than you WIN. 1. FREQUENTLY miss your serve. 2. FREQUENTLY miss your return of serve. 3. HELP your opponents by keeping their OUT balls in play. 4. When your opponent hits a very difficult FAST shot at you, try and hit a low percentage sharp angled shot for a winner rather than a DEFENSIVE shot. 5. Take away your PARTNER S easy forehand shots, with your weaker backhand shots. 6. Get upset with your Excellent Pickleball partner who has SUCCESSFULLY jumped in front of you to win the point! 7. Do NOT keep the ball at your opponents feet as much as possible. 8. Do NOT play up to the No Volley Zone line. 9. Hit the ball TOO FAST for good placement, NOT giving yourself enough leeway for error. 10.Take TOO MANY sharp angle shots rather than high percentage shots down the middle of the court that bounces between your opponents. the above is all very Negative, so be sure to convert it into a Positive suggestion
