2 In our spotlight this month, we connect with the Germantown Grille located in their new location at 505 Ten Mile Creek Road in Germantown Hills. The eatery recently opened at this new location on February 17th, moving from their previous location in the Jubilee Crossing strip mall across Route 116. Jake and Sarah Adkins first opened the Germantown Grille in August, They purchased the restaurant and freshly remodeled it to their standards. After their first year in business, they realized that they needed more room for their customers. The planning stages began with a wish list for making their current space larger or possibly acquiring a new building. When the old video store became available to purchase, they were ready to jump on it and make it the restaurant and bar they needed. Jake and Sarah s dream of owning their own restaurant started back in Galesburg, Illinois while they both worked in the restaurant industry. They always found theirselves wanting to do things a different way or offering different food choices, and thought the best way to express those dreams was to open their own restaurant. They found the Germantown Grille was for sale, and with having family living in the area, the deal was sealed. They packed up their bags and they moved to Germantown Hills. Jake and Sarah moved to Germantown Hills with their young son Tyler who is now 13 years old and in the seventh grade at Germantown Hills Grade School. He is active in basketball and baseball, and it is known that he loves the wings offered at the restaurant. In the last 5 years, the Adkin s family has become involved in the community. They are members of the Germantown Hills Chamber of Commerce, and help to support many local charities and fundraisers throughout the year. Walking into the new location of the Germantown Grille, you will notice a pleasant waiting area to keep you comfortable while waiting for a table or your party to enter. As you are seated to your table, you feel that you entered an upscale restaurant. The tables and seating are plush and clean, and the bar area has very nice wood accents with adequate lighting when needed. The menu has changed some with the location, but you can still order most of your favorites. Their number one seller are their burgers, but definitely try the wings or the Dixon s Fish Sandwich. They are delicious. The new restaurant also offers a banquet room that holds 50 plus people, and is available for events, fundraisers and meetings. In the short time being open, the room has seen a lot of traffic. Call now to reserve your next gathering. We wish you well and many more years of success! On The Cover The MTHS class of 2020 participated in the Welcome to the Real World experience at Metamora High School on April 5th. This life skills and financial literacy exercise involves the students choosing a career, receiving a salary, and then making tough choices on buying a home, paying for insurance, utilities, and other expenses, all while balancing their budget! 6 In Our Community Avenue of Flags The GFWC Illinois Metamora-Germantown Hills Junior Woman s Club will display The Avenue of Flags in the Metamora Park on the Square, weather permitting, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on May 29th for Memorial Day. Each flag is flown in honor of a veteran. Those names are encased and on display in the front of the park. Two hundred and thirty-four flags will line the front, back, and sides of the park, as well as the interior sidewalks. The Junior Woman s Club is asking anyone who would be willing to help put up or take the flags down, to meet at the Metamora Square at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Library News The Germantown Hills Library is excited to announce their new expanded hours that started in April: Monday - Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Reading by Design The Germantown Hills, Metamora, Spring Bay, and Washburn branches begin their Reading by Design summer reading program on June 5th. Children of all ages through high school are invited to participate and earn prizes for reading during the summer! SuperHero Day! The Metamora St. Jude Run Team is hosting its third annual Bags Tournament on May 20th at the new Germantown Grille location in Germantown Hills. This year they are excited to announce the addition of a 5K Run and Kids Fun Run in honor of Keegan Gallup. Keegan is their little hero who lost his heroic battle with cancer this year. The 5K Run/Walk starts at 9:00 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run starts at 10:00 a.m. Register by May 1st to guarantee a T-shirt and discount on 5K run, or heroes cape for Kids Fun Run. The Bags Tourney starts at 11:00 a.m. Registration is $40 per team until May 1st and $60 after May 1st or on the day of the event. Silent Auction items are needed to make this event a success. All proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. Register at www. MetamoraSuperHeroes.com. JFL Registration For the first time, the Metamora Germantown Hills JFL will offer online registration through its website at starting May 1st. The website will have all the information you need to sign up. There will still be one walk-in registration on June 26th at MTHS from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This is for boys and girls K-8th grade. 7 Tiny Tots Contest The GFWC Illinois Metamora-Germantown Hills Junior Woman s Club will sponsor a Tiny Tots Contest to be held June 21st - 24th during Metamora s Old Settlers Days in Metamora. The contest is open to all children, two-years old and under as of June 20th. Anyone wishing to enter should submit a recent 5 x 7 picture, a $5.00 entry fee, and a completed entry form on, or before Friday, June 17th. Entry forms are available on the club s Facebook page, Commerce Bank in Metamora, and Heartland Bank in Germantown Hills and Metamora. A $50 prize will be awarded to a boy and girl who receive the most votes, which will be determined by the general public during the four-day event. All proceeds go to St Jude Children s Research Hospital. For more information, contact Melissa Peters at Going Back in Time The 1966 Metamora Redbird football team was inadvertently left off the list of undefeated teams in our article in the April issue. Below is a picture of the 1966 team that was coached by Marty Stromberger, Ron Schieber, and Chuck Leonard. This powerful squad finished the season 9-0 with an offense that averaged 355 yards per game and a first string defense that allowed only four touchdowns all year! Pork Chop Cookout and Community Garage Sale The Germantown Hills Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Pork Chop Cookout and Community Wide Garage Sales on Saturday, May 6th. The cookout will be held at Germantown Crossing from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. Enjoy a freshly grilled pork chop, chips and soda for $6.00. Along with the cookout, the Germantown Hills Garden Club will hold a plant sale and there will be a Vendor/ Craft sale from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Lastly, E-Recycling for old desktops, cell phones, and more will be held during this timeframe. Soles for Car Seats The Metamora Kiwanis Club, along with Eureka Greater Area Kiwanis Club, launched a shoe collection drive. The Club will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgrs will purchase the donated shoes. The money raised will be used to donate car seats to the Woodford County Health Department and other local agencies. Shoe drop off locations in Metamora include Commerce Bank, Goodfield State Bank, and MTCO, and at State Farm in Germantown HIlls. For more information, call
