AROUND CAMPUS April, 2015 ACADEMIC Students at CE celebrated Read Across America, with a kick off on March 2 nd, Dr. Seuss birthday! And - oh what fun we had counting our minutes that matter - our reading minutes! Pictured is Mrs. Younger s 3 rd grade class in their green mustaches. We also held a Seuss Shuffle: students picked a book they wanted to hear read, then everyone shuffled to the classroom reading that book! Each class had a book and activities for that story and all adults read to someone! In celebration of Pi Day, 3/14/15, Northeast Intermediate 6th graders were challenged to see who could memorize the most numbers in Pi. Our first place student memorized 232 numbers and as a reward, she got to throw a real pie in Mrs. Milligan s face. Our second place student memorized 152 numbers in Pi and as a reward, he got to throw real pie in Mrs. Eisenmann s face. Great job 6th graders!! A group of 28 students from the French 2, 3, and 4 at the High School took a field trip (lead by Mrs. Garrison) to Oral Roberts University on March 31st to see the Frenchspeaking singer-songwriter Marcel Van Dam. Highlights included a Q & A session with Marcel--in French!--and a tour of the ORU campus before the concert

The students at North Intermediate were provided information on the importance of exercise and staying fit by the Tulsa Driller representative. He had students take their resting heart rate. Next he led them in the Chicken Dance where the music went faster and faster. Then students took their active heart rate. This interactive experience helped students understand what they should feel like if they exercise the appropriate amount of time they should start to perspire and their heart rate should be elevated. Students also learned about the new Choose My Plate food guide from the Tulsa Health Department representative. The new guide replaced the old food pyramid. Visual displays of what the amount of food on the plate should look like if they are eating healthy included: a baseball size serving of vegetables; a tennis ball serving size of fruit; a deck of cards serving size of protein; a 9 volt battery size serving of cheese or dairy; and a CD size serving of grains. Mrs. Triska and Mrs. Coffman were captains for the Orange and Blue Student Teams who participated in several games. Word Scramble had students hold up letters and the teams tried to figure out and spell correctly the word Nutrition. Go, Slow, Whoa was a game to learn more about portion control. The final wrap up and review was a game of Nutrition Trivia. Students and staff enjoyed the interactive assembly and said it was fun learning about getting fit! Please congratulate the following Bixby High School, March students of the Month Seniors Sophomores Taylor Corvin Tatum Burnett Hayley Hogan Karis Konkler Dalton Allen Quinton Porter Luke Schnare Matthew Hancock Juniors Emily Jenkins Makenzie Beleria Edson Varela Gabe West Freshman Sarah Tyree Madalyn Dees Zac Thomas Lawson Sumler The Leadership Class and Gifted and Talented Organization at the High School took 41 students to Junior Achievement Investor's Challenge on March 26, hosted by Tulsa Tech and Junior Achievement of Oklahoma. Students participated in a simulation of sixty days of stock market trading. They competed in teams of 3 or 4. A mentor from a local business worked with each team to help them learn how stocks and current events affect the market. One of our teams won 3rd place, and we had five teams in the top ten! The students enjoy the competition and learning about investing and making their money grow. Dewayne Patterson and Amy Karnes From CE Media Center... "Central Elementary celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss's birthday March 2nd - 6th. Events included a Door Decorating contest, Bookmark contest, and a reading challenge. The reading challenge called *Minutes That Matter* challenged children to read each evening and to count the minutes read. There was a winning class for each grade level and a student winner from each class. Student winners participated in an obstacle course." Minutes That Matter grade level winners.

Mrs. French - Kindergarten Mrs. Savastano - 1st Grade Mrs. Moore - 2nd Grade Mrs. Mauch - 3rd Grade For a successful season, the Spartan Middle School Academic Team and their Coaches Mrs Woods & Mrs Girard enjoyed an evening of food and games at Incredible Pizza, while also receiving Medals for their outstanding competition. Tulsa Oilers Visit CI Central Intermediate students were visited by a few people and players from the Tulsa Oilers' organization for a rousing, fun filled assembly to cap off the week on March 27th. Students were asked trivia about hockey, played in a mock hockey game with players and teachers, and competed in relay races. 6th grader (and winner) Caleb Lail and 5th grader Gunner Davis competed in the boys' relay race. 5th grader (and winner) Britnei Quiroz and 4th grader Alexa Martin raced for the girls' relay race. The final relay race pitted Mr. Arant against Mr. Orrison, who came out victorious. The deafening sound of excitement in the gym showed what a great time students had with the team. Young Writers' Club Does It Again Add the following things together. 36,126 words, 200 teacher hours, 190 pages, 100 student hours, 75 meetings, 19 chapters, 12 young writers, 11 revisions, 7 months. Do you know what they equal? The latest and greatest novel that follows up the accomplishments of last year's book, The Outdoor Club: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail written by the Central Intermediate Young Writers' Club. 6th grade teacher, Dr. Stick has led the group of students through the writing process from idea to publishing, including research field trip, to put together the sequel to last year's novel entitled Mystery of Pirate's Cove. Dr. Stick created the Young Writers' Club as part of a leadership push at CI. He wanted to motivate students to write in different styles and to see the success they can accomplish with hard work and determination. He has expanded his encouragement to all 6th graders through a short story contest and an upcoming speech contest that will occur next month. The students who took part in writing the novel will hold a book signing party in Central Intermediate's Media Center on May 14th at 6:30 p.m. 9GC Academic Team: Undefeated The 9GC Academic Team members include: Carley Huffaker, Tanner Holden, Hannah Bowlin, Hanna Doudican, Elizabeth Gwartney, and Kameron Lambdin. The team is led by Ms. Lee. Central Elementary Students enjoyed a whole-school Rise & Shine assembly at the end of March celebrating several accomplishments. The greatest of these celebrations included our Minutes that Matter as students measured the minutes they spent reading. Those students who invested the most minutes participated in an exciting obstacle course competition. Officially, Team Wilson and Team Haynes tied but everyone had a great time!! SPORTS BASEBALL: The Varsity baseball team kicked off its season with two games vs. perennial power Broken Arrow. The Spartans came up short in both games by the scores of 13-3 and 6-2. Despite losing both games there were many bright spots for the Spartans. Sophomore Cade Cavalli had an outstanding weekend at the plate and on the pitchers

mound. He had 3 hits in 5 at bats and also pitched 5 innings giving up one earned run and striking out seven. Senior Zac Reynolds swung a hot bat as well getting 3 hits in six at bats. Senior Liam Roden pitched in both games going 31/3 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 5. The Bixby Spartan baseball team won 3 games and lost 1 the week before Spring Break. The Spartans split with Tulsa Union in a double header. Spartans won the first game in a hard fought extra inning contest by the score of 5-4 and lost a heartbreaker in the second game by a score of 7-6. Jared Droll and Gavin Staton pitched well in the first game, with Staton getting the victory in relief. The Spartans played Tulsa Memorial on Thursday and Friday winning by the scores of 12-0 and Pitcher Liam Roden got the win in Thursday s game and Cade Cavalli got the win in Friday s game. The Spartans swung hot bats and executed very well in all phases of the game. Tanner Griffin, Cade Cavalli and Zach Reynolds continue to swing the bat well. The Spartans played one game over spring break against the Collinsville Cardinals. The spartans lost the contest The Spartans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with RBI-s from Braeden Daniel and Zach Reynolds. However, Collinsville responded with 6 runs in the 3 rd inning and 4 runs in the 5 th inning to put the game out of reach. The Varsity Baseball team went 2-3 with losses to Tulsa Union, Sand Springs and Jenks. The victories were against Spiro and Life Prep Christian Academy. The Spartans have a busy week ahead with district games vs. Enid, and four games in the Choctaw tournament. The Spartans won two conference games against Enid and went 4-0 against four of the top teams in the state to win the Choctaw tournament. Cade Cabbiness had a walk off 3 run home run to beat Enid 4-3. He was also named tournament MVP for the Choctaw tournament. Liam Roden was chosen as Best Pitcher in the tournament. Jared Droll, Gavin Staton, Liam Roden, Cade Cavalli, Justin Smith and Austin Griffin all had Victories on the pitching mound this week. Jeremy Goodwin had two saves on the pitching mound as well. Jared Droll is swinging a hot bat for the Spartans and has a batting average around the.500 mark. Tanner Griffin and Justin Smith continue to swing hot bats as well. Braden Daniel and Gavin Staton had their first home runs of the season. The Spartans continue their season competing in the Broken Arrow/Sand Springs wood bat tournament. ~ Glenn Sullivan, Head Baseball Coach BASKETBALL BOYS: The Spartans lost to Midwest City to end the season. Will Fiser lead the scoring with 16 and Parker Jennings added 12. ~ Scott Padek, Head Coach Boys Basketball BASKETBALL GIRLS: The Lady Spartans finished up the season in the area tournament against BTW. We faced a hot Muskogee team in the regional finals. Then we traveled to Memorial to take on BTW, the girls fought and competed but came up short, final We finished the season I couldn't be more proud of this group of young ladies, they continued to get better and better with each game and had some great wins this year, and they exceed a lot of expectations!! We have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years but will greatly miss our seniors-karlie Owens, Ainsly Wolfinbarger, Megan Doak and Allie Wells! ~ Krista Binam, Head Coach Girls Basketball Intramural Basketball Champions: "Hoops I Did It Again" A big thank you to the following staff for their participation: Scott Padek - Referee Rodney Flowers- Referee Brent Giddens - Referee Krista Binam- Player Brad Clark - Player Kelli Wilson - Spectator Stephanie Blackwell Spectator Jay Bittle - Spectator

Bixby Boys Basketball Tryouts for th Grade: M/T/W. April th from 2:45-4:15 P.M. in the BHS s New Gym. 9 th Grade: Thursday & Friday, April 30 & May1 from 2:25-4:15 P.M. in BHS s New Gym. Students who play fall sports will have a separate tryout after fall sports have concluded. DANCE: Bixby Spartan dance competed at NDA nationals in Orlando Florida. There were over 315 routines and more than 2100 dancers from 25 states and Japan. Spartan dance took 20th in medium varsity Pom, 13th in small varsity kick, NDA unleashed judges choice award and 3rd in JV kick, and innovative choreography, technical excellence, and 2nd in JV Pom! We brought home 5 trophies! ~ Courtney Jefferson, Head Dance Coach GOLF: The Spartan golf teams opened their season with an invitational tournament at home against several of their Frontier Conference opponents. The Boys team took 3rd place, dropping the Championship medals by just 4 strokes. The Spartans were 2 strokes out of 2nd. Junior Grant Peterson tied for Individual Medalist honors but dropped a hard fought play-off that went 4 extra sudden death holes before a winner was crowned. The boys realized they played well enough to win but found out that they must sharpen their short games if they are to make it back to State for the 3rd consecutive year. Sophomore Karsten Sessom shined in the JV division, and had Karsten been in the varsity line-up Bixby may well have won the tournament! Clearly a positive outing in that the boys played neck and neck with some of the Frontier Conference teams they must beat to make it back to Karsten Creek in May for the State Championship. The Girls team stumbled in their first 9 holes and while they played better on the back 9, they did not recover enough to medal in the tournament. 2 of the girls in the line-up were playing their first ever high school tournaments and showed clear signs of opening season jitters. The team s two scoring leaders, Senior J.T. Neuzil and Freshman Natalie Gough were surprisingly out of sync all day, playing from 10 to 20 strokes off their usual strong games. 3 JV girls, Kylee Johnson, Taylor Davis & Rachael Eckert did play well in their first ever 18 holes of high school competition, giving us a positive glimpse of what is ahead for the Lady Spartans. The Varsity girls travel to Ponca City next week where they placed 3rd in the State last season and are looking forward to vindicating themselves for failing to show their Frontier conference opponents what they plan to do this season in the State Championship. Lady Spartan golfers placed 2 nd at the Jenks Invitational on Wednesday and placed 4 th at the Cherokee Hills, Muskogee Invitational. Wednesday the girls were firing on all cylinders at Jenks, playing consistent golf from the top of the line-up to the bottom. They bested schools from the east & west in what was likely a showdown of state tournament teams in May. Saturday the team finished with only 4 players due to an injury and illness in the line-up struggled with the wind and putting the slick greens but still played reasonably well under the circumstances. J.T. Neuzil and Natalie again took a top 10 medalist honor each. Jordyn Rogers has improved with steady play and has moved into the 3 bag position with the team, with Isabel Vela and Meagan Brady playing consistent golf this week as well. JV players, Rachel Eckert & Taylor Davis made two consistent showings this past week and clearly represent key players for the future of the program. The girls travel to Enid this week and look to continue their drive toward the state tournament. On April 2 nd The Lady Spartans placed second at the Enid Invitational. Natalie Gough took top medal honors shooting an impressive 78 in a 30mph wind typical at Western Oklahoma golf tournaments. Senior J.T. Neuzil also placed in the top 5 scores for the event. The Varsity boys played in Norman at OU s Jimmy Austin course and Forest Ridge Saturday. Grant Peterson and Chase Carr continue to be the Spartan top scorers and continue to log scores that should get them to the state tournament in May. While Morgan Fletcher, Weston Smith, Mike Kemmerly & Karsten Sessom are working hard and seem destined to play at the OSU Karsten Creek s State tournament as well. The boys play Monday at Bailey Ranch where they nearly won regionals last year and Baily Ranch is again the regional site this year. At Owasso Bailey Ranch the Varsity boys played their best golf of the season so far that will get them to the State Tournament next month. Grant Peterson & Chase Carr continue to lead the Spartans on the links with Matt McMahan, Weston Smith & Morgan Fletcher improving every week. Freshman Michael Kemmerly continues to rank in the teams top

5 and expects to be there for the Regional Tournament in late April. The JV Boys won tournaments at Sapulpa and The Links in Broken Arrow. Andrew Vela, Troy Scott, Barrett Benton and Carson Ellsworth are playing strong golf right now for the JV Boys, with Addison Walton and Nathan Baber shooting scores that edge them toward the varsity line-up. ~ Kem Morrow, Head Golf Coach SOCCER BOYS: Bixby vs Ponca City, (W) 4-0 (district) Very good start to district play. Dominated from start to finish. We were able to use the wings to our advantage and exploit their outside backs which freed up our central players. Great win. At the Claremore Tournament, the boys played three games in two days to win the tournament against BTW (JV) was a frustrating one. 20+ chances and only 3 goals to show for it. Dominated the game in possession but just couldn t finish. Semi-finals against a good Bartlesville team who were quarterfinalists in the State tournament last season. Best game we ve played all season. They tried to utilize their skilled 3 center mids and our boys did a great job of closing them down and not allowing them to create. Clinical counter-attacking soccer with great finishing. Very good win. Championship game against Claremore started badly when we conceded a poor goal to fall behind 1 nil. Great response though as we scored less than 2minutes later to level and never looked back scoring 3 more goals to take the trophy, 4-1. They couldn t keep up with Jake DeLoache as he consistently got behind their back line and created opportunities. Very proud of the boys and the high level they played at all weekend. The Tournament MVP was Jake DeLoache and Nate Lancaster, who made All-Tournament Team. Mike Schwarz, Head Boys Soccer Coach SOCCER GIRLS: The girls soccer team opened their season with a win against the Muskogee Roughers. We were up 4 goals in the first half and ended the second half a few minutes early with a 10-0 victory. We were not only proud of the win, but we were proud that our athletes pulled together to participate in Muskogee's PKD event. We teamed up to help raise money for Griffen Melson and his fight against Polycystic Kidney Disease. We are looking forward to a great season of soccer! We ask everyone to come out and support us next week as we take on Owasso away and Bishop Kelley at Bixby! At Owasso, the game ended in a loss. We turned around and played Bishop Kelley that following Thursday. BK is always a big rivalry for the Lady Spartans and they fought all the way to the end of the game. However, BK was able to create two one-on-one opportunities to finish the game with a 2-0 victory over Bixby. It was a great team effort and we are proud of the girls overall performance!! The Lady Spartans traveled to Ponca City for our first district game of the season. The girls started the first half very strong with a 6-0 lead. The final score was 8-0 to win our first district game. The lady Spartans soccer team competed in the Lady zebra Shootout. The girls beat Northwest Classen for the first win of the tournament. They then played Carl Albert that same day and came out with a 1-0 victory. Those two victories put us in the championship to play Claremore on Saturday. The Claremore game was a tough battle. Tatum Wagner scored the first goal to put us up 1-0 first half. Piper Cannon scored the second goal in the first half giving us a 2-0 lead at half time. It was a battle the entire game. We held the 2-0 lead and finished the game strong to win the championship. Our defense had a Tournament shutout allowing no goals against us. Tatum Wagner was Tournament MVP and Ciara Hamilton was All Tournament Player. What a great weekend of soccer for the Bixby girls team! We are so proud of your efforts this weekend ladies!! The Girls played Sapulpa and were down one goal in the first half. In the second half Piper Cannon tied the game with our first goal of the evening. The girls dominated the second half but could not seem to put another in the back of the net. In our second overtime, with only 2 minutes left, Maddie Bittle took two players on and placed the ball in the back of the net to win the game for us! It was also our breast cancer awareness night. We raised over $1200 dollars for this cause. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who helped in this event. We played Enid on Friday night for senior night. The team came out ready and played a great game. We won3-0! We celebrated Seniors Piper Cannon, Elle Doyle, Peyton Hazel, Alyssa Rydin, Adrienne Streetman, and Tatum Wagner. A big thanks to all who came out to support the team and the seniors this night! ~ Tamara Davalos, Head Coach Girls Soccer

STUNT: Bixby STUNT took on Jenks and Owasso Thursday evening in the first home games of the season. The crowd was extremely supportive with a student section that really boosted the confidence of the team. The Spartans were defeated by the Trojans but played a great game against the Owasso Rams for the first victory for this team. The next set of games will be on April 6 at Jenks. This week brings a big week as it s the final week before post season pairings will be finalized. Joy Marie Galliart, Head Softball Coach FINE ARTS Please join me in congratulating the following BHS Choir Students. All, but one (and it was her first ever solo at a high school contest!), received a superior in solos and/or ensembles. They advance to State in April. These students are truly remarkable! And they are: Hanna Doudican, Denver King, Nicole Lueker, MacKenzie Lynch, Margo Mironava, Noah Osborn, Avery Roper, Gracie Rose, Samantha Rule, Bobby Stillman, Natalie Taylor, Becky Walters, Allison Wignall, Emily Wright. I am indeed proud of their accomplishments. Connie Coleman, High School Vocal Music Director On Saturday, March 7, 16 students from the BMS Choirs traveled to Claremore High School to sing in the OSSAA District Solo/Ensemble contest in 15 different events. It was a great day, with our students receiving 11 Superior ratings and 4 Excellent ratings and bringing home 16 medals! Please join me in congratulating the following students: Superior (I) Solos: Beth Binkley, 8th grade, Kinsey Brown, 8th grade, Sydney Carter, 7th grade, Azlee Decatur, 8th grade, Paige Emberson, 7th grade, Jadon Henderson, 8th grade, Austin Shay, 7th grade, Aidan Sudler, 7th grade

It's a great day to be a singing Spartan! Choir and Drama Bixby choir students from Central Intermediate, North Intermediate, and Northeast Intermediate joined together in harmony on the Northeast Intermediate stage March 10th. Each group performed pieces led by their choir directors, Mrs. Coffman, Ms. Schultz, and Mrs. Moskal. Also, they all performed together on two pieces under the leadership of Mrs. Davis, Bixby Middle School choral director. After a daytime rehearsal, family and friends attended our evening performance. The 4th graders from North Intermediate just completed their production of Annie, jr. It took four productions to include all of the 4th grade! The audiences were quite impressed! Anna Coffman, Music Teacher, North Intermediate Drama This last weekend was the District tournament for the OKEast District of the National Speech and Debate Association. Oklahoma East District is one of the most competitive districts in the nation, and has produced more national champions in the last three years than any other single district. Schools are only allowed to bring their top four competitors in every event, and only three students from the district qualify in any event to Nationals. It is by definition a tournament for just the Best of the Best. After nearly 16 rounds of very tough competition on two very long days (the tournament is usually a three day tournament and was condensed to two because of the snow), Bixby has the honor of qualifying FOUR students to this summer s National tournament in Dallas. Chloe Haroldson and Mariah Mitchell in Humorous Interpretation. The first time Bixby has ever qualified two people in the same event. Brook Becker in Original Oratory. This is Brook s second year to attend Nationals. Last year he competed in Nationals in Congressional Debate. Nicole Floistad in Dramatic Interpretation. As a Freshman, Nicole was the youngest person to ever qualify for Nationals from Bixby. Now, as a junior, she is the only person from Bixby to ever attend three years in a row, and the first person in the OKEast district to attend three years in a row in the same event. We also have two first alternates to Nationals who I expect will be 'called up' attend as well. Davis Simpson in Dramatic Interpretation and Jessica Cadieux and Kelsey Johnson as a duet in Duo Interpretation. Brook Becker was the first alternate in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, but since he is going to Nationals in Original Oratory he had to give up the spot! If you see the following students, please congratulate them! (And maybe ask to see their performances they re all only 9-10 minutes long.) Regional Honors for Speech and Debate This last weekend was the OSSAA regional tournament for Speech & Debate and Bixby had a wonderful showing. We took 2nd place overall and had quite a few students qualify for the State Tournament in April. Qualifying for State: Garrett Wheeler Regional Champion in Humorous Interpretation & Qualified in Monologue Nicole Floistad Regional Champion in Dramatic Interpretation

She is our Spec ED PLC leader & also one of our dynamic PC committee members. She changed her position this year to help out with our portfolio students, which just shows how much of a team player she is at NI. She collaborates with all regular Ed teachers to help with differentiation in classrooms. She always steps up to the plate when asked without hesitation. Miss Lytle is just one of many rock stars at NI! Jenny Reed Mrs. Reed is a valuable part of the Bixby NEEI team. She takes time to get to know each & every student by their name; not only to get them through the lunch line efficiently but because she truly cares about our students. She creates a warm & inviting atmosphere in the cafeteria by greeting each child with a bright smile & a hello every morning & again at lunch. She is a team player & it shows in her ability to pitch in: to wipe down tables, prepare meals, buy small plastic cups with her own money so a student may get a drink of water, talk to a student who needs a little extra attention that day, or just to offer a friendly ear & kind smile. She makes the Bixby Northeast Elementary & Intermediate cafeteria a warm & friendly place to be. Mrs. Reed truly deserves some acknowledgment & appreciation for all she does for the Bixby Spartan team. The BHS Football Coaching staff was honored again after the Gold Ball winning season by being "featured Speakers" at Coach Gundy's Coaching Clinic hosted at OSU. Coach Montgomery, Coach Flowers and Coach Rogers are pictured here prior to their presentations in Stillwater.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Town Hall Meeting and Reality Party Tuesday, March 31st, students and parents gathered to discuss the state of Bixby's underage drinking and substance abuse. Students from Tulsa Tech's Criminal Justice Program acted out a high school party scene to portray what our students may experience, including drinking, marijuana, and prescription pills. Bixby's Social Host Law was discussed, explaining that parents/homeowners will be responsible for anything that is allowed or happens on their property. Kellen Knapton, a Bixby High School student, discussed his experience with drugs and alcohol and his road to recovery. A panel of community members, including school personnel, the chief of police, an EMSA worker, a city councilman, and a school resource officer, answered questions about our community's issues with drugs and alcohol. This event was organized by Bixby's PASS (Positive Action for Safe Students) Coalition. Central Intermediate's M.U.T.T.S Club participated in a service project at Raising Canes on March 25th. Students assisted the restaurant by cleaning up, welcoming customers and even carried out orders. We were able raise $110 to benefit the Tulsa Humane Society even though it was the same night of the big storms. M.U.T.T.S Club Sponsor, Shanna Fletcher Donuts with Dad at CI On April 3rd, Central Intermediate wrapped up another successful week with PTA sponsoring Donuts with Dad.
