To encourage square dancers to travel to the clubs in the Council, the Dancer started the HVD Challenge back in1989. Since then, many dancers have completed the Challenge, several more than once. Special cheers for Beth and Steve Reverri who have completed the Challenge six times! Below is a list of the 14 currently active HV Council Square Dance Clubs. Three of these are A-2 clubs where some dancers could not participate, so to complete the challenge and qualify for a dangle, you only need to dance at eleven clubs. Take the checklist with you and have an officer of the club sign it. When you have ELEVEN signatures, mail the list to the Editor and your name will be added to the Honor Roll below. 4 FROM THE EDITORS Farewell, Bob Best wishes for 2009 to all dancers in the Hudson Valley! We hope that you will spend a good portion of your leisure time this year square dancing and round dancing and introducing your non-dancing friends and family to dancing. What better way to spend your time? You will find many dancing opportunities in this issue. The HV Dancer also appears on the Hudson Valley Council website, thanks to our webmaster, Steve Ocskasy. If you have pictures or updates to contribute, please get in touch with Steve (nysdancer@yahoo.com). We are sorry to report that Nite-N-Gales Round Dance Club will no longer be dancing. Pat O Donnell has done a wonderful job introducing round dancing to newcomers and to offering great teaching and dancing during regular dances. All round dancers will be very glad to know that she will continue cueing at various dances in the Hudson Valley throughout the year (check out Dancing Days). Congratulations to those dancers chosen by their clubs to be Hudson Valley Dancers of the Year in recognition of their contributions of time and ingenuity to support square and round dancing. On the next page, you will find the list of those that marched in the Parade of Clubs at the November Council Dance as well as a picture of Lauren and Fred Zales from R & R Rounds who were chosen to be the Hudson Valley Council Dancers of the Year. Finally, it is with great sadness that we report on the death of beloved caller and teacher, Bob Paris. Robert C. Paris died on November 30, He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Barbara Rosso Paris and his daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Mark Purtle, daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and James Rossetti, son and daughter-in-law Mark and Heather Paris, nine grandchildren and hundreds of bereaved square dancers who will miss him terribly. It is a superb tribute to Bob that so many people counted him among their personal friends. He made everyone he met feel special. Please see page 53 for his obituary and a picture of Bob with that unforgettable smile. See also the Club News from the Rocking Roosters which we have left as originally written in the early fall. There was no reason to change this article -- we wanted to hang on to the joy that the Foleys express of seeing Bob back at the microphone this past summer. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of this very special figure in the square dance world in early Please look for notices and check with your club presidents to find out when and where. Page 4 Robert C. Paris of Danbury died peacefully Sunday, November 30, 2008 at Danbury Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Barbara Rosso Paris. Born in Sherbrook, Quebec, Canada, Bob graduated from Ridgefield High as president of his class. He was the proprietor of Decorator and Hardware Emporium in Danbury. In addition, for over 50 years, he was a nationally-known western style square dance caller, founding the Bethel Circle B and the Newtown Rocking Roosters clubs, and teaching lessons and calling for clubs all over New England, and in New York and New Jersey. His charismatic personality and infectious smile made him many friends, and his family joked that they could never go anywhere without running into someone he knew. During his illness, he received over a thousand cards. He loved fishing, boating, Rhode Island beaches and his dog Oliver, but his greatest love was his grandchildren, of whom he was very proud. Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Lynne and Mark Purtle of New Fairfield, and Marcia and James Rossetti of Norwalk; his son and wife, Mark and Heather Paris of Danbury; his grandchildren, Justin, Joshua and James Purtle, Kristen and Matthew Rossetti, Monica Pirone, and Jordan, Taylor and Olivia Paris and a brother, Lloyd Paris of VT. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Rd. Wilton, CT , or Danbury Animal Welfare, PO Box 971, Danbury, CT. Page 53

6 More HV Council News: Please mark your calendar with these important dates: Saturday, March 7, 2009, 2:00-4:00 PM (TENTATIVE ) Hudson Valley Council Meeting, Fishkill, NY Sunday, May 3, 2009, 2-5:30 PM Hudson Valley Subscription Dance Saturday, September 12, 2009, 2:00-4:00 PM (TENTATIVE) Hudson Valley Council Meeting, Fishkill, NY Sunday, November 1, 2009, 2:00-5:30 PM Hudson Valley Council Dance, New Windsor, NY A Single Note From Steve Ocskasy, USDA Delegate, nysdancer@yahoo.com I have to say that Nashville Tennessee is a very friendly place to visit. That was the site of the singles convention this year. If you weren t there, I am sorry you missed it. The dancing was good and the accommodations were good. I went on the city tour which took us to the Country Music Hall of Fame. I also went to the Grand Ole Opry, which is something I wouldn t have done otherwise, not being a real fan of country music. But hey, it s famous and I was there, so why not. The next singles convention is in Davenport, Iowa which is in the Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois. Four of the main callers are Bill Harrison (MD), Matt Worley (VA), Mike Hogan (NE) and Ken Burke (IN). The cuers are Adrienne & Larry Nelson (IA), Tony Speranzo (TX) and Natalie Srosty (IA), and for lines, Jo Saffel (IA). Steve Ocskasy Join Steve at these conventions in 2009! We do not have the dates set for the Wednesday dances, but you will find our Sunday dances in Dancing Days. More club news from Walter Lasky (bklnyadv@aol.com, ): Al e Mo Squares had a nice contingent at The Gathering where we picked up a lot of information on the state of square dancing today. We will take all of this information seriously and apply it to our needs as a club. We intend to devote a part of a workshop evening to a general open house meeting for some give and take on what we need to do to keep and to increase our membership. Our open house on September 17, 2008 yielded four students who we expect will continue through the season. On October 26, 2008, we participated in the Narrows Botanical Gardens Fair and Dog Show. We had good participation from the spectators and hope to spread the word about square dancing. Halloween was a great night for us with fifteen members in costume. We had a couple of hand carved, candle-lit jack-olanterns which lit up the gloom later on in the evening when the lights were put out and one of our members read Edgar Allan Poe's horror story, "The Tell Tale Heart." We lose money on every dance. To survive this next year we will be making the following changes: 1. Our format will change to alternating Mainstream and Plus tips. We have many students who would like to start dancing after one semester and perhaps join a club. They cannot, and some lose interest. 2. Our rates will increase to $8 for guests as well as members and $10 for non-affiliated (those not supporting any club). This is still a bargain for a night of dancing, socializing, and great eats. 3. During the winter months (standard time) we will have one regular dance a month and one open-mike dance. This will give new callers an opportunity to practice their skills; and with the number of seasoned callers dwindling, this is much needed practice. And it should be fun for the dancers! During the warmer months (daylight savings), we will return to our regular dances twice a month. I hope dancers will continue to support us and encourage their club's student dancers to start dancing as soon as they graduate. See you in a square! Janet Moss, Boots 'n Bows Page 48 Page 9

We are looking forward to a Plus graduation in January and to continuing Monday classes at the Bedford Hills Community House for our current Mainstream students. We will have two FUN NIGHTS at Bedford Hills on February 2 and 9, 2009, with a new beginner class starting on Monday, February 23, February 23 will also be a fun night, so if beginners can t make it on the other evenings, they can still try it out that night and start lessons. Angels from all clubs are warmly invited to bring newcomers to Friendly s Fun Nights and to Angel with them at class. Our new format of alternating MS/Plus at all dances has been well received and we have seen some increased attendance. ALL mainstream dancers, please feel very welcome to come to dance at Friendly s. You may not dance every tip but you will have lots of fun and good conversation and snacks! Why?...the caller was BOB PARIS, his first dance in over a year. We had 90 degree weather, we were dancing on blacktop in the middle of Main St., but nobody cared, Bob was there. We all had a ball, and so did Bob. We also had another surprise. The Roosters have marched in the Newtown, CT Labor Day Parade since the 1960 s and always been a popular part of the parade. This year, the Parade Committee awarded us the Legend Award for our long participation.. Several HVC dancers have joined us over the years, and are always welcome. We have an interesting program coming up, with callers from NH, VT and MO, as well as a number of local callers and cuers, including teenager Matt McGovern who is one great young caller. Come and join us when you can. See you in a square, yours or ours. Our MS class is off to a very promising start with 18 students registered. The enthusiastic group is learning rapidly from our super teacher Fran Wadel. Class coordinators are Marie Ford and Rose & Ray Begin, with the guidance of Patsy Lisak. A number of last year s grads are among our angels and several have brought friends into this year s class. As I write this, our immediate past presidents Laurie & Barry Schoenhaut are on a trip to Australia. Our former treasurers Sue & Rich Baumeister enjoyed a trip to Yellowstone and now are angeling for the class. Our chairmen Mal & Dotty Blotner are vacationing with Eileen & Larry Landon who had been second presidents of the original Rockytops Plus club. The Blotners and Landons attended Heartland Jubilee Advanced & Challenge weekend in Ohio and the Dave Wilson weekend in West Virginia. Dave Wilson, from Sweden, is one of the few callers in the world who calls every level from MS to C-4. Much as they love square dancing, our members also enjoy other interesting pursuits. Marion & Fred Shaw did a 4-week bike trip along the Danube River, from the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea in Romania, a distance of 1600 miles through 8 countries. They covered an average of 60 miles per day, leaving plenty of time to see the countryside and meet local people. Our President Greta and her husband Leo celebrated their 40 th Anniversary with a 3- week vacation in South Africa, staying in Pretoria with a Belgian school friend of Greta s whom she had not seen in 41 years. They enjoyed the beauty of the country, the friendly people, and even went on a safari. For some of our members, a highlight of 2008 was the arrival of a new grandchild. Betty Schultz and Sandy & Bernie Beck welcomed new grandsons, and Maria & Roger Hoernlein welcomed their eleventh grandchild! May the New Year bring many pleasures to all both on and off the dance floor. Page 16 Friday (cont.) First we had another delicious picnic followed by plus dancing with rounds at the Putnam County Park in Carmel, NY with Dottie Welch from Nova Scotia calling and Jo Yakimowski, our fantastic cuer from MA. We had a great turn out and lots of good food, many happy dancers and the weather was delightful. We couldn't ask for more. We are beginning to explore possible dates for our 2009 Picnic/Dance. We also celebrated a quarter century of our club's existence on a fall Sunday afternoon, October 5, Several of our former members arrived, one drove quite a distance, to celebrate with us. What a great turn-out. What a great time. I want to thank all our wonderful guests who come to our dances and make the evenings so enjoyable. See you all soon in a square!
