1 Twelve months ago, Diane Hobson and Helen Johnston asked 21 year old university student Felicity Grigor if she would be interested in being the Lions Club of Maleny s entrant in the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest. The Quest is supported by Lions, Lioness & Leo Clubs plus the wider community throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales. Felicity agreed to be Maleny Lion s entrant and what a rewarding, challenging and life changing experience it has been for Felicity and her team. Felicity, a confident, knowledgeable, energetic, dynamic person worked with the committee to organise a bare foot bowls day, the movie Sky Fall, a High Tea at Flaxton Gardens, a race day at Woodford, a sausage sizzle at Landsborough, sold roses on Valentines Day, and sold art union and Quilt raffle tickets. Felicity visited the Royal Brisbane Hospital and the PA Hospital to see where all the research dollars we send are spent, volunteered at the Maleny Trailride in Conondale and supported the Maleny Mountain View Challenge. Over the last twelve months, Felicity raised over $8000 which is a fabulous effort in a small country town. Felicity thanks all those who volunteered, supported Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Sports Results for 17th June, 2013 MEET FELICITY GRIGOR 2013 WINNER OF STATE FINAL OF THE LIONS MEDICAL RESEARCH PERSONALITY QUEST and sponsored her events through out the year. On Saturday the 15th June, members of the Blackall Range Lions Club and members of her immediate family travelled to Brisbane to support Felicity at the State Finals of the lions Medical Research Quest. Everyone was delighted and excited when Felicity was announced as the 2013 Personality Winner. Her prizes include a cruise for two to the Pacific Islands. All the girls in this Personality Quest across the state raised over $ in this quest. What an amazing effort and what a wonderful support for Lions Medical research in Queensland. The Foundation is committed to raising funds for medical research to find cures for diseases and to improve the quality of life for present and future generations. Heartiest congratulations Felicity on your wonderful year promoting Lions Medical Research, and thank you for lifting the profile of the Lions Club of Maleny in the Community. 6 With the Senior Colts having a bye, there was only one game played at Witta last weekend, Maleny Bushrangers Reserve Grade took on Caloundra Lighthouses. The conditions were tough and so was the opposition, Lighthouses were out to repeat their last winning performance against the Bushrangers. The Bushrangers started slow and lethargic and Lighthouses dominated play. Against the run of play, Bushrangers travelled the length of the field to put the first points on the board. Caloundra soon replied with a try and it was game on. Bushrangers warmed themselves into the game and were able to keep themselves one step ahead on the Lighthouses eventually coming out the victors. Final Score: - Bushrangers 22 v Lighthouses 20 Tries:- Oliver Watson; Dean Perriman; Tom Schaumberg Conversions: - Ben Newham 2 Penalties: - Ben Newsham Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Bushrangers Senior Rugby Union Photo - Ben Newsham converts! 9 Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Sports Results for 10th June, 2013 Don t give your money to scammers! In 2012 Australian people were scammed out of more than $93 million with victims in NSW and Queensland accounting for almost half of the amount lost nationwide. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's spokesperson said it received almost 84,000 phone calls or s from people last year who had been contacted by scams. Take care and do not let the scammers get you! Witta Tennis News Sunday Men s Veterans Witta Wackers maintained their position as leaders in the Division 4 Veterans competition with a nail-biting win over Gympie Reds at Gympie. Playing on ant bed courts brought back memories from LONG ago for most of us, and it took a little while to adjust. Despite a lay-off of several weeks, Noel George still managed his usual perfect tally of 24 games. As always, Gympie provided great opposition and a friendly match. Witta Wikings had a good win over Yandina Youngins 7-5 sets. Despite the flogging, the Yandina team showed great interest in joining our club... were the after-match cheese board and drinks responsible for this phenomenon? Social tennis Social tennis: Monday 8am, Tuesday 7pm, Saturday 1pm. All welcome. Enquiries to or on the web:

10 Whether he's delivering a two-day seminar for 675 accountants in Las Vegas in his working life, or languishing in a prison as one of The Maleny singers principles, it's all about hitting the high notes. As a tenor, he's saying Camille in Maleny Singer s 2011 production of the Merry Widow and then found himself in jail as Colonel Fairfax in the Yeomen of the Guard last year. He'll once again languish in a cell during his role of Alfredo in the upcoming production of Johann Strauss Die Fledermaus commencing June 21. Colin only returned to singing in 2010, after a great deal of cajoling from his wife and the Maleny Singers Artistic Director, Margaret Taylor. Colin has a delightful lyric tenor voice and he is an incredible dedicated student, who has grown immensely vocally since returning to the stage, Margaret Taylor said. Photo below: Colin Dunn is the hopeful Italian lover! Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc This is one accountant hitting the high notes Colin Dunn isn't your average accountant. He plays the long lost love and Italian playboy Alfredo, who has returned after a long absence to seduce Gabriel von Eisenstein s wife, Rosalind with his vocal prowess. Colin is very funny in the role the audience will love him. Born in the UK, Colin started singing at the age of 11. He played one of Fagan s boys in a school production of Oliver and then locally produced plays. He soon found that singing was his true passion and at the age of 16, performed a tenor solo for the Lancashire youth choir front of 2000 at Preston Guide Hall in Lancashire. However, Colin drifted away from singing, pursuing languages first and then his other passion, eventually forging a career coaching and consulting to public accounting firms. His love for the stage possessed though, and he now regularly presents to groups large and small in his professional capacity as well as enjoying his performances with Maleny singers. The Waltz King Johann Strauss brings this farce to life with wonderful wit and melodies such as The Laughing Song, and is a fitting celebration for our 10th anniversary performance, Miss Taylor said. Performances will take place at Maleny Community Centre, commencing with the gala performance on June 21st at 6:30 PM. Matinees will be held at the Maleny Community Centre on June 23rd at 2 PM, 29 th June at 4 PM, and 30th of June 2 PM. A second evening performance will be held on the 28th of June at 6:30 PM. Ticket prices for gala night only is $33 adults. Other performances for adults are $27.50 and concession tickets are $22 and can be booked by phoning the Maleny Visitor Information Centre on or for gala night tickets. Free music and magazines at your local library Two new and exciting products providing access to free music and magazines are just the latest benefits of being a member of your local Sunshine Coast library. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said People can choose from an extensive catalog of over 7 million songs and music videos. These products are easy to use by simply downloading the titles direct into a PC or a wide range of mobile devices. These two products are welcome additions to our widening range of elibrary resources which already includes ebooks and eaudiobooks. 12 Coastal Women Div. 1 Noosa 2 vs. Maleny 2 Travelling again to Noosa for their second round game, on Friday the 14th of June, the Maleny Rangers Women s team saw a much better game being played and refereed, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Again Maleny let the opposition open the game in full on attack mode but this time was quicker in grabbing back control of the game. Building pressure on the Noosa defence line it was not long before the first goal was brought up by Mary Ann Bryce and the introduction of Stephanie Reid on the right wing saw that pressure increase, but without any further goals being registered. The second half had Maleny in top form and total control with many shots on the Noosa goal just being fended off by the Keeper. As time wore on good interplay between Lilly Moser and Steph saw Lilly one on one with the keeper and a nicely placed ball found the back of the net. With 20 minutes to go Maleny let their guard down and Noosa took advantage of the situation pulling the game back on equal par. Maleny worked hard to try and retrieve the lead, but to no avail. Best on ground were Stephanie Reid, Lillie Moser, and Hayley Venturini. Tuesday the team will be at Caloundra for their round 9 game which was deferred due to rain. Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Rangers FC Weekend June 14th/15th Rain leading up to the weekend ensured many field closures around the coast and most games were postponed until a later date. However both our Women s and Men s teams were able to play on Friday night. Want to play soccer? Maleny Rangers FC still has places available on our U17 Girls and U17 Boys teams. Interested? Please contact Ed on or Emma on Maleny Rangers Show Raffle Winner Congratulations to M. Richards the winner of our Wine & Chocolate Basket, kindly donated by Cheryl Hine. Winning ticket - Green 57B. Keep up to date with club news and match fixtures at Men Div. 4 Coolum 6 vs. Maleny 0 In only their second defeat this season, Maleny s Friday night match against Coolum was a top of the table clash, with Coolum running out winners 6 goals to 0. For NRL fans a 6-0 defeat would seem a low score. For soccer aficionados too 6-0 is not unheard of, but for Maleny Rangers Mens 6-0 is massive as it meant they lost the best defensive record in just 90 minutes. Coach Brodier accepts responsibility for the size of the defeat and has promised an improvement. Maleny management believes the team is still on target to be in the finals at the end of the season.
