Community spirit is alive and well in Caloundra when on Saturday 18th August at 10am the Maleny Light Horse re-enactment Troop have been invited to take part in a remembrance service commemorating the Vietnam Veterans Cavalry Reunion. It is with great honour that the Troop has accepted the invitation to form a guard of honour when veterans pass through the entrance of the car park of the RSL. Other military memorabilia will also be on display including a decommission helicopter. Live music is being performed by the Sunshine Coast Caledonian Band and the event looks set to be a wonderful occasion at the Caloundra RSL. All are invited to attend this service to remember the Battle of Long Tan and those servicemen and families who fought this terrible campaign and suffered trauma from the effects of this war. Light refreshments will be available in the Hall on completion of this service. Lest We Forget A.F. Rowsell Maleny R.S.L been invited to take part in this ceremony, so preparation are being made to acquaint horses with the large helicopeter and the car park area at the Caloundra RSL as well as all the usual preparation of the riding tack and uniform each rider and horse wears. Troop members are all volunteers and consist of horsemen and women from a diverse cross-section of the Maleny and broader Sunshine Coast community. Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Bowls Club Results The Men s Pennant Team went down by two shots to Pacific Paradise on Saturday. Les Bennett s Team won by nine shots, Ray Oldfield s drew but unfortunately, Hansen s Team were beaten by 11 shots to give Pacific Paradise their two shot wim. Last Monday, the Ladies had a win and a loss against Kawana thus scoring two points. Hopefully, both Teams will do better this week. Tuesday s winners with two wins plus 23 were Don Ginns and Ian Hansen. The Touchers went to John Lewis, Ian Hansen and Di Drew who all happened to be on the same rink which is quite unusual. Great tennis was had by all and the luncheon was great. Score 42 to 27. Witta Wasps had a close contest against Eumundi Gems - though there was only one point the difference at half time we finally went down 33 games, 3 sets, to 41 games, 5 sets. Congratulations Gems Witta Wallabies, after a shaky start won in 2 sets on Thursday night against the Kool Kats Team this week was Maree and Sue Vockenson, many thanks to Sue. The Lob-Stars Annie and Pauline started out very strong but Not My Fault came back and eventually won in the tie Break The Whistlers went to a very windy Maroochydore. Everyone was fighting the wind, couldn t take your eyes off the ball it bounced. We somehow managed to play through and bring home the win. Score was games, 6 to 2 sets. Team was Aki Lepper, Donna Kuskopf, Brenda Warner and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats had a challenging day at Flaxton Gardens and came away very full and satisfied and in need of a nap. Rob and Sam Outridge! Take your seat for Murder at the Playhouse! Audiences are in for a chilling experience at the next production by the Maleny Players. Entitled It s Murder at the Playhouse the show presents three one-act plays with killing as the theme, ranging from drama through to black comedy and farce. As well as some of the Players regular performers in the cast of 11, including the welcome return of Joy Marshall, some new faces will be taking to the stage for the first time. The three plays are In the Blood, a dark drama by Helen Wyngard concerning the manipulations of a serial murderess; Double Tap, by Michael Olsen which depicts the graduation day at a school for assassins, and the farce Golf, Marriage and other Murderous Matters by Debra Chalmers. Said Players President David Crewe Last year at this time we staged three one-act plays as A Feast of Classic Comedies which went down well to sell-out houses. Our audiences like the variety this approach offers, and now we are repeating the concept, but with a very different feel. The Players are keen to provide opportunities for anyone who has an interest in theatre whether on stage or backstage or front of house. So we are delighted to have new faces on stage as well as two new directors and backstage crew. Do you wish to travel to a mystical and magical destination that is near and not to far on Tuesday 14th August 2012 with the "Dodgy Bros & Shonky Sisters" of RSL Maleny Sub Branch Inc., and have lunch on route. The cost is just $15, which includes bus fare and lunch, to be collected in RSL Hall prior to departure and a $1 raffle will be held & drawn during the day. This magical tour departs RSL Hall not later 9:30am, and any pick-up in/around town before 9:15am and enroute thereafter by arrangement. 9 THE UNFORGETTABLE TERRY WIN- DRED has passed away at Nambour Hospital last Monday 6th August, after a long illness. Terry was President of the Swimming Club during the crisis period from when there was considerable tension with the School, and when it seemed as if the Club must relinquish its licence to operate the Swimming Pool for community use. The finances of the Club were in dire straits, volunteers were few on the ground, but Terry, a regular morning lap swimmer in those days, gave her enthusiasm and energy to try and re-invigorate the club. The installation of a new learn to swim pool occurred during her period as President, and she made the initial approaches to Caloundra City Council to seek council funding assistance for pool management. As a long standing resident of the hinterland, one who had seen her own kids through the school Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Vale Terry Windred! system here, she lent weight to the committee. She knew everybody and knew how to involve others in getting things done. With her zany comedy and outrageous sense of fun, she was also a driving force behind the 25th Anniversary celebrations at the pool. Terry continued to swim laps in Maleny during the early days of her illness and even after her move to Caloundra. She campaigned for a hydrotherapy pool in Maleny and was President of the Maleny and Community Hydrotherapy Pool Association from its inception until this year. She will be long remembered for her outrageous good humour and positive, no-nonsense, attitude to dealing with adversity. Robyn Graham Maleny Swimming Club Inc. Maleny Grove has very kindly provided its Clubhouse as a venue and the first meeting of the chess club will be held on Tuesday 21 August 2012, commencing at midday and going through to 5.00pm. Tea & coffee will be available. Meetings will be held weekly. Chess sets will be provided. All are welcome (including school children) regardless of ability! 12 Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Maleny Girls love a Challenge! On Sunday 5 August, four of Maleny s junior netball teams took part in the annual Caloundra Club Carnival, along with about 80 other teams. The carnival included clubs from the weekly Caloundra competition, other parts of the Sunshine Coast, and as far away as Caboolture and Gympie. The Maleny girls played hard, and there were some excellent games. Each team played five games of 16 minutes duration, so the games were short and sweet. When the final game was played, and the scores were tallied, B52s and Sonics came 4th in their respective divisions, and Skyhawks ended up in 5th place. Congratulations to the Bombers who attained 3rd in their competition. It was great to see the girls supporting each other; cheering and forming guards of honour. Thanks to all those parents and coaches who brought the girls along (and got up so early). At least we were rewarded with beautiful weather. Thanks also to Helen Woolls, Carnival Convenor, who did a great job of organising things both prior to and on the day. Natasha took heaps of photos well done. Special thanks to Alan, Arion, Bernie and Evie for umpiring. Umpiring requires a lot of concentration, and the girls did a great job as they were kept very busy with umpiring and then playing their own games.
