1 Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Inc Sports Results for 29 th April, 2013 Youth remember those who went before to ensure our freedom Whilst it was both the young and old ventured that ventured out on April 25th to watch and congratulate veterans who marched across our states, and overseas, it was the young that were really out there to remember the ANZAC tradition. Numbers that attended the Maleny Parade have proved the Anzac spirit is alive and well, with the number attending the service e growing as the centenary of Gallipoli nears. That story of Australian duty was as relevant today as it was for families and communities who farewelled the original Anzacs in 1914 and 1915 to the battlefields of Europe and the Middle East. Maleny Bridge Club Bridge is a challenge and the most popular card game in the world, played by over 60 million people of all ages in more than 100 countries. Bridge is a trick taking game, a bit like 500. It is fun, with the added challenge of communicating with you partner at the table to solve problems. This is fantastic exercise for the mind and it will certainly keep you mentally fit. Bridge is easy to learn and we have a new class starting on 9th May that concentrates on getting the beginner playing and enjoying bridge after four simple two hour lessons. Through Bridge you are also certain to meet many new friends. The Club aims to provide a comfortable environment where both members and visitors can enjoy playing a friendly and relaxed game of bridge. We run four to five sessions a week as required to cover regular and supervised play, teams events, and beginner lessons. It is important that we remember the 39 Australian military personnel who have given their lives in the present war in Afghanistan. This time the Bushrangers got up. in the first half. However it was going to be Noosa s day and with two late tries in the second half they cemented their position on top of the table. 8 Maleny Golf Club The usual 3.00 pm Thursday 8 hole competition on the temporary greens attracted 19 players last week, with the winner being Shayne Kromberg, runner-up Sudha Hamilton and nearest the pin was Jonathan Kromberg. It was an excellent golfing day and great to see the competition being so well attended. It is a condition of our insurance that the Driving Range closes on Thursdays to accommodate the golf holes comp. Another condition is that there are no golf balls from the driving range activities lying on the course - so a big pick up of balls is carried out every Wednesday. Where we would be without our dedicated volunteers and everyone who give us their time? A great effort on everyone s part and we are most appreciative. Should you wish to come along and play golf in any of our coming events, please contact John Oxenham at mob or Maleny Golf Club competition@malenygolfclub.com.au Upcoming District Events If you are interested in playing in any of these upcoming events, please phone John Oxenham, who will make sure your name is registered to play. Maleny Rangers Men s results Friday April 26th Men Div.4 Maleny 1 vs. Kawana Yellow 0 Maleny Men shed blood, sweat and, almost, tears when they took a depleted squad to Kawana on Friday night, with several players unavailable and niggling injuries starting to take their toll. However, buoyed by 3 weeks of success, the team was optimistic and started the match energetically; an approach which paid off quickly when nicely controlled passing from Moacyr Lima, in the midfield, to Sam Hunt, on the right wing, resulted in a goal from Hunt after only 12 minutes of play. After this both teams dug in and play started to get messy, with Maleny taking the brunt of the injuries as several players went down after strong tackles. The blood started to flow towards the end of the 1st half when Dean Pearce suffered a head clash whilst bravely defending a Kawana corner. Play was halted for a few minutes for makeshift bandaging to be applied to staunch the flow but Pearce was undeterred and he continued to play, encouraging Maleny's defence to batten down and effectively repel all Kawana's attacks. Casualties continued in the 2nd half with Mark Ramke, Photo: Dean Pearce's makeshift bandaging having played a highly effective role in defence, suffering a calf injury; then an elbow to the back of the neck threatened to take Jesse Stanley out of play. Despite this Maleny held on to their lead and the final score was Kawana Yellow 0-1 Maleny. Man of the Match champagne, donated by Maleny Mountain Wines, awarded to Sam Hunt. Maleny Rangers is still seeking players to fill positions in some teams. For further information visit:

The Wikings are a young side (for Veterans), lacking a bit of experience, wisdom and technique. John B, Kev, Andrew M, Jeannie, Mike and Maree lost 7 sets to 5. Wackers enjoyed a comfortable 8-4 set win over Cooroy, a friendly but formidable foe. With 2 wins out of 3 matches played, things are looking good for Wackers! Man of the Match was Noel George, with a perfect 24 game performance, but the True Grit award has to go to Jan Mason. Social tennis Monday 8am, Tuesday 7pm, Saturday 1pm. All welcome. Enquiries to or Maleny needs new service The Maleny community could make good use of a new minding service for busy housewives. No longer is it good enough to have Day Care Centres that accommodate only young children. Husbands also need a place to be left in care when busy housewives cannot afford the time to look after them - after all husbands are also often childlike.
