(Nelson Mandela) Every year at this time, one hears of the number of students applying to enter university vs the number of students who were offered places. The table below lists some statistics for certain universities that commence their 2017 academic year shortly. It becomes apparent that applicants need to apply to more than one tertiary institution and offer the best possible results to secure a place. University No of applications No of places available received Wits UCT Stellenbosch Univ of Jhb CPUT Rhodes UWC KZN Sample Total Sources: The Times, 6 Jan 2017; Weekend Argus, 14 Jan 2017; University Depts. The past fortnight s news highlights: College teachers attended IEB Subject Conferences locally and regionally. These meetings provided valuable networking opportunities, curriculum enrichment and professional development. Thank you to staff for attending over the weekends. College athletes participated in an Inter Schools competition at the Bellville Stadium. Well done to the athletes and thanks to Ms Robertson. 4 Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard SENIOR PREPARATORY NEWS Special points of interest: Being there for your child Gr 7 Art Students inspired by Wassily Kandinsky Reddam House ASB performs well at the District Athletics Meeting Upcoming dates and reminders Please diarize our Inter-house Swimming Gala on the 1st of March! Issue 3 Term 1 24 February 2017 Being there for your child Dear Mums and Dads Having taught in over six schools over a period of 22 years, it has always fascinated me how parenting styles differ. I have had the privilege of working closely with children and parents from many different walks of life and cultures. What stands out for me is that most parents do actually want the best for their child. The challenge is how this goal is often interpreted and put into practice. All children are different. Some require gentle supervisory guidance as they enter their primary school years. Others require and need a more hands-on approach that assists them with personal administration and management. It takes a mature and grounded parent to ensure that their child receives the correct type of support at the right time, as well as when to encourage that first solo flight. This is all part of the learning curve for both the child and the parent. There is no one perfect manual on how to raise perfect children. That is why at Reddam House we pride our self on working hand-in -hand with the parent body to ensure that every child is catered for in a loving and nurturing way best suited to that individual. Reddam House ASB is a slightly smaller campus which makes it easier for that special one-on-one attention. Bringing up children that are balanced, educated and happy in today s world is no easy task. It requires insight, knowledge and maturity from all parties involved. Thank you for being part of the team! Yours sincerely Darron John Misplon Senior Preparatory Liaison (Student Affairs) Hlengiwe and CJ District Athletics We are pleased to announce that two of our students did exceptionally well at Vygieskraal last Saturday. CJ Sibanda won the U 12 Long Jump and Hlengiwe Nyathi came second in the U 10 Girls Shot Put. We congratulate both these outstanding athletes and thank the coaches who assisted them! 5 ART Spot our Art ART CLUB OUTING Our SP Art Club students enjoyed a unique opportunity to meet and chat to some of the artists involved in theinternational Public Art Festival in Salt River. This Street Art project proved to be very interesting. To the stu dents delight, they were invited to paint on one of the walls forming part of this project! We felt extremely proud indeed! Valentine s Day fun! Our Grade 4s completed their Mondrian-inspired gift bags. The Grade 5s stamped up some Kisses wrapping paper. These Valentine hearts by the Grade 6s were inspired by Paul Klee. Kandinsky s paintings of circles inspired the Grade 7s when creating Valentine cards for our staff. Marja de Witte Page 5

10 SPORT SPORTS REPORT Athletics The WP district athletics championships were held at Vygieskraal stadium on Saturday the 18 th of February. Our very own CJ Sibanda and Hlengiwe Nyathi represented the City Bowl district and came out with flying colours. These amazing athletes were outstanding as they both qualified for the Western Province Final Championships happening this Saturday, the 25 th of February. CJ won the U12 boys long jump event with a leap of 4,10m Hlengiwe came second in the U10 girls shot put. We are extremely proud and wish our super athletes all the best at the championships tomorrow. 11 SPORT... CONT D Golf Congratulations to Kimon Botoulas who has been selected to play for the U13 WP Golf Team! Great news indeed. Well done Kimon, we are immensely proud of you and wish you success at your upcoming events. Mixed Martial Arts Jadon Cooper participated at the recent Alpha Kids Grappling Competition in Stellenbosch and did amazingly well to finish a credible 4 th place. Well done Jadon, we are proud of your achievements. Cricket Match Reports U10 vs Highlands: The U10 cricket team played their first match of the season against Herzlia Highlands on Monday 13 February at the Nazareth House fields. After winning the toss, we elected to bat and our opening pair of Marley Koch and Idrees Adams quickly laid down the gauntlet with some aggressive stroke play. Marley was particularly severe on any short pitched bowling as he scored a quickfire 20 off 5 balls. Idrees batted steadily with the other batsmen who all chipped in handily. A healthy number of extras from the opposition aided us in getting a massive total of 112 runs for 5 wickets off our allotted 15 overs. We then confidently got onto the field and immediately put them under a lot of pressure as they found scoring very difficult. We displayed a very disciplined bowling performance and restricted Highlands to only 37 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Reddam House won the match by a huge 75 runs. Idrees Adams was man of the match. U10 vs The Grove: We were hoping to follow on from our impressive win against Highlands when we tackled the Grove Primary at Lady Anne fields on Monday 20 February. We won the toss once again and were confident that we could put up a competitive total on the board. We faced some very good bowling but still managed a gamely 68 runs for 4 wickets off our 15 overs. We thought that would be enough given how good our bowling unit had been. However, most of the bowlers struggled to get some sort of rhythm and delivered too many extras as The Grove comfortably won by 6 wickets. We will need to improve the bowling and fielding basics for our next game. Special mention goes to Marley Koch for his score of 25 runs and bowling figures of 1 for 3 off 3 overs. Page 11

12 SPORT U11 vs Kronendal: The u11 cricket team played a phenomenal game against Kronendal on the 8th of February. The team went into the game with two less players, due to injury. We successfully made a few catches and enjoyed some successful fieldwork from many of our players most notably Kai and Amy. We batted well, unfortunately with two players down we lost the game by 10 runs. All in all a positive experience to begin our season. U11 vs Highlands: On Wednesday the 15th of February the u11 cricket team played a game against Herzlia Highlands. We started batting, scoring an incredible 84 runs. Sam Collins and Maurits Baalbergen batted exceptionally well. Our fielding was not as tight as it has been in previous weeks. That being said a few catches and wickets were taken securing our victory. We won by 7 wickets. A hearty congratulations to the team for an excellent game! U13 vs Herzlia Middle: On Thursday the 16th of February the U 13 Cricket Team played an away game against Herzlia at the Van Riebeeck Park fields. Reddam House won the toss and elected to bat first. Reddam House won the match by 32 runs. Special mention goes to Jamie, Luke and CJ for outstanding play. Well done, Reddam House! Tennis Team A vs DSK: The Reddam tennis team played their first match of the season against DSK on 15 February. The team played well, but unfortunately lost to DSK 5-1. We hope to improve in our next game. Tennis vs Herzlia Middle School: The A and B teams played against Herzlia on Wednesday, 22 February. Despite the heat, both teams played well and managed to beat Herzlia 4-0. Men of the Match for the A team were Troy Hoffman and Kimon Botoulas. Jordan Porter Weston and Josh Taylor received the award for the B team.
