NEWSLETTER 17 AUGUST 2018 VOLUME 3:05 From the Principal Dear Parents, We congratulate all our Creative Dance, Hip-Hop, Ballet and Dance Students on the outstanding presentation of course work, extra-mural and cultural classes at the Dance Showcase. The standard of teaching undertaken by Donna Baird, Luze Botha and our Ballet Department under Evelyne Argerrer is simply exceptional. We would like to thank all our parents for their unwavering support in preparing the students and for going the extra-mile in the run up to the productions and for being encouraging and appreciative as an audience. We thank the teaching staff who facilitated the evening without this help, it would not be possible to be so professional and organized. We thank each one who worked to make this a success. At a parent meeting on the 7 August 2018 parents asked for information regarding study skill support and stress around tests and exams. It is apparent that parents seek to understand how children learn and how, as parents one can be proactive in helping children. We are pleased to inform you that there will be a workshop for interested parents, at the school, on 1 September 2018 at 10:30 to address this interest. A letter of invitation detailing aspects of the workshop will go out on today. Please respond with a reply slip, so we have an idea of who will attend and how many parents are interested. Another consideration raised by parents is the conversation around Homework should your child be doing too much homework after school, it is appreciated if you contact the teacher or the subject teacher concerned to make an appointment to discuss the issue. We do not believe in overloading children with homework and therefore conversations between teaching staff and parents is paramount. The more we share the learning dynamic, the easier it will become to parent children in the academic space. The ASTRO is complete! Thank you all for your patience in this regard the students and staff cannot wait to enjoy it during the school day, carry out our outside lessons and resume our sport! 3 GRADE 1 Dear Parents, The third term is well underway and we are busy with assessments as well as loads of other exciting upcoming events. Hooked on books, once again enthralled us with their captivating acting and story telling on Monday. We had a visit from the Guide Dog Association and we had the opportunity to meet the gorgeous Labrador and the owner who chatted to us and answered questions. We were also educated about how guide dogs are trained by one of the trainers. This has been a wonderful week filled with excitement as we celebrated Readathon week with a pirate theme. We have been amazed at how well some of the Grade 1s are reading. We can really see those children who have been practising their words on a regular basis and who are starting to enjoy reading more and more. In Maths we continue to do addition and subtraction, doubling and halving, counting and story sums as well as working on Singapore Maths. We encourage the children to practise counting every day as this skill is such a help when doing maths. We will soon celebrate Spring day and the children will be allowed to wear civvies and bring a picnic lunch early in September. Thank you for your continued support. Ms Brown & Ms Toffar
GRADE 2 Dear Parents Ahoy! What a busy and fun-filled week this was! Readathon Week started off with a bang when teachers dressed up as pirates and welcomed the children on Monday morning at the tree. During the week, the children participated in carefully selected activities such as a Treasure Hunt, Reading to ELS, Campread-a-lot and even pirates bombarding the corridors looking for loot! The children enjoyed the Hooked on Books show and as always was a good laugh!
We ended off our week with story time from Author Avril van der Merwe. Thank you for all the generous book donations for Little Libraries. Your continuous support is much appreciated. Have a fantastic weekend! Mrs Beukes & Ms Mellet GRADE 3 The Grade 3s have had a wonderful week! Readathon was great fun and we had such good time learning about Pirates while reading and writing in so many different ways. From a treasure hunt to maps, to Pirate dress up, riddles and story writing and even a Pirate invasion, every day brought a new learning experience. Camp Read-a-Lot was a lovely day of reading stations and creative activities; thank you to the parents who joined us for the first half hour to read by torchlight with all our excited campers. In Maths we learnt about vertical multiplication and will practise this skill again next week. We are also still focused on money with lots of practical learning as we run our own classroom economies. This week we worked out change as we earned extra income for signed homework, clean chair bags and good deeds. Next week brings on the new challenge of working out tax for the first time! Well done to all the girls and boys who took part in the Dance Showcase. The performances were outstanding and each little person worked so hard and with such dedicated enthusiasm. Almost everyone came to school on time and still did their homework while coping with the late nights, we are so proud of all of you! Thank you to all our families for your positive support during this very busy week. We wish you all a restful weekend! Ms Savides & Ms Bailey
HOOKED ON BOOKS SP Hooked on Books This year s presentation of Hooked on Books proved to be very entertaining for all. Marco was the scary scissor, Kyra was the Wonder Goat and the students were amused. Wonder Goat faked death and students giggled. Mila and Sizo represented dinosaurs.
Fillippe, Ben, Kutlwano and Aadhira were Marines from The Edge of Distinction. Marley, Sizo, Mila, Sam, James and Imogen auditioned to be dinosaurs. Mila and Sizo succeeded. Nou is hy in n wetenskaplike laboratorium vir toetse, maar hy spook nog by my.. Die weteskaplikes het hom Monster No. # genoem. Tamika van Niekerk (6E)
SPORT SPORTS REPORT Match Reports Rugby U8 vs JVR: The U8 team beat JVR 30-5 Ethan McMurtrie was the man of the match (B. Toffar) U9 vs JVR: The u9 team lost 15-5 Sam J v Rensburg was the man of the match All the players played brilliant rugby and need to be complimented (B. Toffar) U11 vs JVR: On Wednesday the 1st of August the U 11 Reddam House Rugby team played an away match against Jan van Riebeeck. This was a tough match that called for grit and perseverance. Whilst the final score was in Jan van Riebeeck's favour, Reddam House played a solid game with good sportsmanship. Reddam also took away a few lessons that they will put to good use in future games. Keep up the good spirit, Reddam. (D. Misplon)
Soccer U9A vs Highlands: The U9A team played soccer against Herzlia Highlands on Thursday 2 August. The boys played well but unfortunately lost 2-0. They tried hard to keep possession of the ball, but lost momentum when the other team scored. We are very proud of their efforts and are looking forward to a good comeback in the next match. (J. Bailey) U9B vs Seapoint: The U9B team played against Seapoint Primary. They played well as a team and never gave up but they sadly also lost 2-0. Well done to all the players, their determination was admirable. (J. Bailey) U9A vs Disa: The U9A soccer team took on Disa Primary in freezing conditions. Our team had brave a big delay to start the match as our opponents arrived late but this did not deter or damper their spirits. The team showed great composure and utilised the chances that came their way as we churned out an impressive 2-0 victory. Well done to the entire team for an amazing showing! (C. Musamba) U9B vs Tamboerskloof: On Thursday our U9B team played soccer against Tamboerskloof. The children braved the weather and won the match 2-1. We put pressure on the other team keeping the ball in our own half for the majority of the match. We had lots of close shots of goal and played well together. The other team made for good opposition and it was an exciting game. We are very proud of all the players. (J. Bailey) U11A vs Weizmann: After a shaky start to the second half of the season, things are starting to look promising for the team. The boys stepped up after the past two disappointing losses. Weizmann started strong and were rewarded with an early goal. This was a serious wake-up call for our boys. They started to settle down, and with some neat passing started to put the opposition under pressure. Unfortunately we were not able to finish off the opportunities we had and with a quick counter attack, Weizmann was 2:0 up at half time. From the word GO in the second half, Reddam put Weizmann under pressure. Some accurate passing and good runs down the wings resulted in us scoring a well-deserved goal. Our boys started to put the opposition under pressure in their own half, not giving them much room to play. This was turning out to be a great game. Both teams started to play some decent soccer, and goals started to fall regularly. With time running out Reddam was 4:3 down with 3 minutes to go. They kept piling on the pressure deep in their opponents own half, with the hope to find the equalizer. Only with the help of some brilliant saves from the Weizmann goalkeeper, Weizmann were able to hold on to a close 4:3 win. Good effort from our boys! (M. Fassbender)
U11B vs Kronendal: The 11B Soccer team discovered what many other Reddam sides have that it is tough it is to win at Kronendal. The size of the field allows little time on the ball and requires good decision-making. The team played well at times but lost 4-0. Riley Robinson made some excellent saves and Nabeel Ayob a few goal saving tackles but it was not enough to win. Better luck next time boys! (M. Bennie) U13B vs Weizmann: The U13B team were blessed to have some A team players in their side after the A team was cancelled. After an evenly contested 1 st half were we 2-1 down, we made some tactical switches at the beginning of the 2 nd half and it paid off wonderfully. We quickly equalized and took the lead early in the second half. From then onwards, the floodgates opened as our opponents struggled to close the spaces in behind them as we racked in a few more goal for a resounding 8-2 victory. Well done team! (C. Musamba) Girls vs ISHB: The girls played an incredible game against the International School of Hout Bay. We won 6-0 with a variety of goals score by Angie, Mila and Caelia. Well done girls. (A. Fairall ) Netball U10 vs Llandudno: On Wednesday 1 August the U10 netball team played a match against Llandudno Primary. We were well matched in skill and strength and fought hard to gain possession of the ball. Both teams battled to make the best of their opportunities to score. Reddam won 1-0. Woman of the match was Harper Wood. (P. Farrell) U10 vs Weizmann: The U10 netball girls played a match against Herzlia Weizmann on Wednesday 15 August. Three of our girls were unable to play, but we were left with six willing payers. We had to put in everything we had to make up for a missing player. This turned out to be a good experience as it forced us to move faster and to make ourselves more available to get to the ball. Herzlia won 2-1, but we were happy with our performance. The woman of the match was Naomi but special mention to all the girls for playing their best. (P. Farrell) U11 vs Llandudno: On Wednesday 1 August the U11 netball team played a match against Llandudno Primary. Although our opponents played well, we managed to maintain possession of the ball and made good use of our opportunities to score. Our teamwork and ability to read the game remains excellent. Reddam won 8-2. Woman of the match was Tia Abrahams. (P. Farrell) U11 vs Weizmann: The U11 netball girls played a match against Herzlia Weizmann on Wednesday 15 August. Our tactics on the court were not as slick as usual and we tended to bunch up instead of spreading out to make ourselves more available. We managed to beat Herzlia 4-5. Well done to all the girls. (P. Farrell) U12 vs Weizmann: The U12 Netball Team played against Weitzmann on Wednesday. The girls played well, making use of the tactics that Coach Sindy had taught them. Reddam won 9-3. Well done to the team. Congratulations to Nina Parrello for being chosen as Woman of the Match. (S. Fenner) Hockey Hockey vs Golden Grove: The mixed Reddam House hockey team went to go and test their skills against the U13 boys team from Golden Grove. The game was played at a high intensity. We might have lost 3-1 but we truly enjoyed our time on the field. There was no one player of the match due to the beautiful play of all the players. Well done team, we are very proud of you. (C. Gericke)
