The youth are considered the country s largest potential resource. Consider these sobering statistics recently revealed by the SA Institute of Race Relations. South Africa s youth (people aged 15 to 34) number 19,36 million (36,6% of the population) - 70,8% of youth aged 16 to 20 attend an educational institution - 32,9% of the youth are not in employment, education or training - 36% of the youth are unemployed (could be as high as 48%) - 44% of South Africans between 20 and 24 years are not receiving any personal income - 6,7% of youth are HIV+ (Source: Fast Facts, No 7/ 2014; July 2014, Issue 275, Institute of Race Relations) UNICEF predicts that over one third (18 million) of South Africa s population will be under 18 next year. Congratulations to Ms Kim Mc Namara and Greg de Villiers on their recent engagement! The 2014 Matric Dance was held at the One and Only Hotel at the Waterfront. It was wonderful to have the Matric parents with us for the welcome. The students and their partners, along with Staff enjoyed a memorable evening. Thank you to the Staff for assisting with the planning and organisation. The Gr 4s enjoyed a performance of Charlotte s Web along with the FP. The Gr 8s ably demonstrated their ingenuity and entrepreneurial skills at the Gr 8 Market Day. The Hall was packed with traders and potential customers. Thank you to Ms Miranda Whitley, Staff and well done to the Gr 8s. The SP Drama Eisteddfod pupils held an Eisteddfod Showcase. We all enjoyed their individual and group pieces enormously. Thank you to Ms Cathryn Edwards for all her creative supervision; thank you to the Parents for all their support and well done to the young performers on your collective success at the Eisteddfod. The SP Netball players benefited from the Lushinka Netball Academy workshop. Thanks to Mr Client Musamba for facilitating. The Dance Showcase was an impressive and extraordinary presentation of dance interlinked with some music and drama. To stage a show incorporating so many young people, across such a wide ranging age structure and incorporating so many dance forms is deserving of much praise. To Ms Donna Baird - congratulations and thank you. Sincere thanks to the parents, P n F Committee and numerous members of staff for their positive assistance, and well done to all the dancers and performers! Cont d Overleaf...

3 Reddam House Atlantic seaboard Special points of interest: Dance Showcase! What Robin Williams has to teach us Grade 7 River Rafting Trip Head s and Head s Honour Awards Congrats Ms Mac! Term 3 Volume 4 15 August 2014 Carpe Diem... Dear Mums and Dads Carpe Diem, which is Latin for Sieze the Day, has always stood out as a very special phrase for me. Many of you may recall the well known film, Dead Poets Society, which featured Robin Williams as a dedicated teacher who wished to make a difference. This film has always inspired my teaching and interaction with my pupils on a daily basis. What makes this film stand out for me is that Robin is not phased by the red tape of education, but remains driven to encourage every child to become the best person that they can be in their life. We all have different skills and gifts. That is our privilege. All of us are different. What remains important is for each of us to build on our strengths so that we can develop into the people we ought to be. This is one of our main aims here at Reddam House. As teachers it remains vital that we connect and communicate with our pupils in a deep and meaningful way that will assist genuine personal growth. Every child has the right to grow and develop in the direction they choose, with the guidance of their parents and teachers and let s not forget the laughter and fun that can and should always be part of the process! Robin Williams, I salute you and the message of love that you left the world. Darron John Misplon SP Liaison The Grade 7 s will be going on a Breede River Rafting Trip from the 12th to the 14th of September. Head s Awards J. Lloyd Simm (4), S. van Heerden (5), S. Adams (5), K. 9 SPORTS REPORT As we are now in full swing of our winter sport, please assist the children in making sure that they always bring the required attire and equipment to their respective sporting disciplines. We have had a couple of good weeks with our sports results and we are very proud of all the children for representing their school with great pride and distinction. We continue to improve as we go along and we are very optimistic about the way our sport is shaping up. Netball On Saturday the 9 th of August, a group of about 20 netball girls had the opportunity to attend a coaching clinic run by the Lushinka Netball Academy. The clinic was a huge success and the girls and coaches learnt valuable tips and skills which can only help us in our future encounters. The girls continue to show great enthusiasm and interest in their sport which is highly admirable. Jiu Jitsu Bobbi Brown took part in the Mother City Winter Open Jiu Jitsu Championships over the weekend. She performed exceptionally well and managed to come away with a gold medal. What made her feat even more admirable was the fact she competed in the 12 year olds category which is above her age group. Well done to Bobbi, we are extremely proud of your achievement and wish you well in the upcoming events. Match Reports Soccer U11A vs Highlands: On Tuesday 12 August the team played their best match of the year against a very strong side from Herzlia Highlands. Swift passing resulted in 2 quick goals which set up a good platform for the victory. Li Duangprom was man of the match but the team played well together and thoroughly deserved the victory. U11B vs Weizmann: The U11B boys side played against Weizmann on Tuesday the 12 th of August. The boys dominated the game and created countless scoring opportunities. We managed to head into the interval leading by 2 goals to nil. However, a slight drop in concentration reulsted in Weizmann equalising early in the second half. Luca Lourenco scored his hat-trick goal as we upped the tempo once again. With the match nearing the end, we failed to clear our lines and allowed the opposition to equalise resulting in the final score being 3-3. It was a very entertaining match but we need to be more resilient in defending our lead. Well done boys! Man of the match was Luca Lourenco. U13A vs Sea Point: The U13 boys soccer team took on their local rivals from Sea Point Primary on Thursday 14 August. After conceding an early penalty we struggled to get some sort of rhythm and fell by behind by a further 2 goals by halftime as we felt the absence of our defensive stalwart Tristan Resnick. The coaches changed up the system at the break as we went for broke, playing with 3 at the back and packing the midfield. This resulted in us pressing them higher up on the pitch and creating more scoring opportunities while starving them of possession. The entire team showed great character and resilience as we rallied back to draw the match 3 all. A great performance from all the boys. Well done! U13A vs Ambleside: The U13A boys soccer team played in a pulsating match against Ambleside on Thursday 31 st of July. It was highly entertaining match but we made life difficult for ourselves by conceding soft goals. We went to the break locked at 3-3. A halftime pep talk ensured we move up a gear and managed to score 4 goals in the last 20 minutes of the match to win by 7 goals to 3. Well done to the team for their never say die approach and this results bodes well for the future. Page 9

10 U13A vs Herzlia Highlands: The U13A boys soccer team played against a Herzlia Highlands on Thursday 14 August. We played very well and controlled the game throughout the first half, creating numerous chances but yielding no desired results. Highlands got more into the game after half time and disrupted the rhythm we had shown in the first half. Reddam showed grit and determination in spite of this and managed to grab a 2 goal lead. Another soft goal conceded towards the end made for a few nervy moments but we held on for a well-deserved 2-1 victory. Well done boys. Man of the match was Mattie Mather. U13B vs Llandudno: The U13B team put on their best performance to date in a match against a strong Llandudno side. Although we lost 3-1, we could have easily have been on the winning side had we managed to capitalise on all the opportunities we created. We will focus on being more ruthless in front of goal in our next couple of practices so we can achieve desirable results. Well done boys! U13B vs Kronendal: The U13B team took on Kronendal on Thursday in Hout Bay. Kronendal fielded a strong side and took a quick 4-nil lead by half time. Reddam regrouped at half time and the second half was an evenly contested affair with opportunities going wide on both sides. Reddam, unfortunately scored an own goal and lost the match 5 nil. The final score wasn't a true reflection on the boys' effort. Thaaqib Edwards was the Man of the Match for his solid defence in the second half. Girls vs Weizmann: The Girls' Soccer Team played against Weizmann on Friday, 1 August. Although Reddam got the ball quite often, no goals were scored in the first half. Weizmann however, scored two goals in the first half. The team pulled themselves together and played exceptionally well in the second half. We managed to score two goals, resulting in a draw. Lady of the match is Bobbi Brown. Thanks to the parents who attended the match. Your support is much appreciated. Girls vs Camps Bay: The Girls' Soccer Team played against a tough Camps Bay side on Friday, 8 August. The match ended in a draw - one all. The ladies played well but more effort needs to be shown if we are to continue with our progression. Lady of the match was Tyler Scott. Netball U11 vs Schotsche Kloof: On Monday 11 August the U11 netball girls played against Schotche Kloof. We went onto the court motivated and ready to give of our best. The two teams were well matched and everyone played with determination. Reddam House won 9 7. Congratulations to all the girls for their perseverance and excellent performance on the court. U12 vs Schotsche Kloof: On Monday the 11thof August, the U12 netball girls played against Schotsche Kloof. The girls began the match with a flurry of goals, going 4 0 up within the two minutes of the game. Schotsche Kloof fought back with determination, making a strong comeback to take the half time score to 8 6 in the favour of Reddam House. After some positional changes at halftime, the U12 s did not want to repeat the previous week s pattern versus Camps Bay and wanted to secure victory. The second half proved to be exciting and we looked good when in position of the ball. With some fabulous shooting from Isabella Facey, Reddam House were victorious Our goal for the following matches is to ensure we focus on our defending techniques. WOM Robyn van Niekerk. U13 vs Schotsche Kloof: On Monday the 11th of August the U13 girls netball team took on Schotsche Kloof. During the first half, the U13 team scored six goals with Schotsche Kloof not even making any circle entries. Casey-Lee Scott was invincible from scoring from distance. Our half time team talk focused on spreading out and remaining in our zones to prevent bunching. We knew that maintaining such a strong lead was going to be difficult. In the second half, we looked like we were tiring but still managed to secure two more goals. Reddam House won the match convincingly 8 1. WOM Talia Yiacoumis Chess Page 10

Our veteran players quickly set our new players' minds at ease as they were quite nervous. All our players played superb games and demonstrated great sportsmanship. There were quite a few supporters that came to watch the match. We thank all of you for your support- it really makes a difference. Unfortunately William Coleman's opponent could not make it to the match resulting in Reddam winning 7-2! (a new record). The man of the match was Benjamin Laughton.
