2 New Digital Media THE FRIENDS have recetly fuded subscriptios to two excitig video services: Kaopy ad Acor TV. Your library card ow gives you free access to both. Kaopy parters with public libraries ad uiversities to provide film ad televisio programmig that bridges cultural divides, helpig brig people together. Acor TV provides televisio programmig from Eglad, Irelad, Caada, Australia ad New Zealad; NPR has hailed it as the Netflix for the Aglophile. To sig up for Kaopy: 1. Go to the library s website (brookslibraryvt.org). 2. Click o the Digital Media butto below the slide show. 3. Click o Kaopy. Whe the Kaopy scree opes, click o SIGN UP to create a accout. (This is a oe-time registratio that will eable Kaopy to recogize you as a library cardholder wheever you wat to watch movies.) 4. Whe you receive a verificatio , click o the verificatio lik, ad you will be brought back to Kaopy s home page. 5. To start watchig, eter your library card umber (without spaces) ad your library password (usually the last 4 digits of your phoe umber). If that does t work, give the library a call, ad a staff member will help you reset your password. 6. A widow will pop up explaiig how it works, ad you ll be all set to start watchig! You ll have access to 10 films per moth. Each time you log o, the umber of films you have left will appear as a small umber i the upper right corer of the scree. Kaopy is also available as a mobile app, ad it works with digital TV services like Roku. The sig-up process for Acor TV is somewhat differet. Acor is oe of several services o the library s RB Digital platform, so to access Acor, you ll eed to set up a accout with RB Digital. If you already have a accout, you ca skip the followig steps. 1. Go to the library s website (brookslibraryvt.org). 2. Click o the Digital Media butto below the slide show. 3. Scroll dow to the rb digital block, which cotais Acor TV, ad click o it. 4. Click o REGISTER. (This is a oe-time registratio that will allow RB Digital to recogize you as a library cardholder wheever you access Acor or its other services.) 5. Create your ow userame ad password, ad click o REGISTER. 6. You will be brought back to the RB Digital Brooks Library home page. 7. Click o the set of three small parallel lies i the upper left corer, which will ope a sidebar. 8. I the sidebar, click o ENTERTAINMENT. 9. Click o ACORN TV BRITISH TV. 10. Click o CHECKOUT. 11. A CHECKOUT CONFIRMATION box will pop up. Click o the ACCESS butto. 12. O the ext scree, click o the ACCESS butto. 13. O the Welcome to Acor TV scree, create a password ad click o the ACCESS ACORN TV butto. 14. You will be brought to the Acor TV homepage, ad you re ow set to start watchig! You have ulimited access to the programmig for 7 days, after which you ll cotiue to have ulimited access i 7-day cycles. RB Digital is also available as a mobile app, ad it works with digital TV services like Roku. Summer Challege By Lidsay Bellville, Youth Services Libraria THE TOP FLOOR of Brooks Memorial Library was a rockig place this summer ad ot just because of the musical otes decoratig the room. Our Libraries Rock! Summer Challege was a big hit, with 162 childre ad 43 tees participatig. The retur of Sig ad Dace with Robi was a perfect match for this summer s theme. O eight Tuesday morigs, little oes ad their caregivers joied Robi Morga i the Meetig Room to sig fuy sogs, make music ad, of course, dace. Sig ad Dace with Robi is preseted i collaboratio with KidsPLAYce, ad we are grateful to the Frieds of Brooks Memorial Library for sposorig this toe-tappig program. A big thak-you goes out to Bellville Realty for sposorig our aual Moday Movie Matiee for the thirteeth year! Bellville Realty purchases the movies we show ad has doated over 100 DVDs to the Childre s Room! The Mieralogical Society gave their time for our Rocks Rock! evet ad let us a woderful assortmet of rocks for kids to explore at our weekly Discovery Statio. Lizi Roseberg from the Brattleboro Food Co-op led the Salsa ad Salsa evet, where kids leared the dace ad the leared to make the food. Cogratulatios to all our youg readers who worked hard to complete their levels ad ear prizes ad to the tees who read all summer log. To produce the childre s summer programmig, it takes more tha the dedicatio of our staff ad voluteers; it takes commuity support, ad we were lucky to receive that support i both time ad fudig. Summer Food Service Program By Lidsay Bellville, Youth Services Libraria FOR THE FIFTH YEAR, Brooks Memorial Library participated i Vermot s Summer Food Service Program, which provides free luch for childre aged 18 ad uder. From Jue 25 through August 10, the Library served 385 meals a 50% icrease over last year. We could ot provide this valuable program without the help of our amazig luch program voluteers. We would like to thak Beau Foshee, Diae Heilema, Be Hut, Pat Ireto, Garet Nuite, Tim Sabor, Martha Sipori, Jessica Swift, Robi Weste, Mary White ad Ash Youg for doatig their time each week to help feed local childre. Ad this year we had a couple of visitors durig mealtime: Shyla Floss from the Vermot Departmet of Health joied kids ad parets to talk about how to stay healthy, highlightig the ew hikig trail guide available at Lizi Roseberg from the Brattleboro Co-op kicked off the summer by teachig kids how to make their ow yummy ice cream ad the retured at the ed of the summer to make sweet dessert tortillas. 4 Holiday Raffle Baskets LAST YEAR we started a Basket Raffle that bega with the holiday book sale ad wet through to the last day that remaiders were for sale. It proved successful, ad we thought we would hold it agai this year. We are certai that we have may Frieds with creative mids who would ejoy assemblig a gift basket, ad we would welcome ay doatios. Last year we built them aroud a theme. It ca begi with a book, but it does t have to your imagiatio ca ru free. It was a powerful, emotioal cocert that is still remembered fodly to this day. Now we are brigig Evas back to sig with her close fried Evely Harris, a 18-year vetera with the iteratioally-acclaimed black wome s a capella esemble Sweet Hoey i The Rock. Harris is a high eergy-performer, composer ad arrager. The show will be at the Brooks Memorial Library o the eveig of Friday, October 19, at 7PM. Tickets are o a slidig scale to accommodate all. Frieds 13 th Aual Holiday Book, CD & DVD Sale MARK YOUR CALENDAR for the Frieds Aual LIKE NEW book sale, to be held at the library: Thursday ad Friday, November 29 30, from 10AM to 6PM Saturday, December 1, from 10AM to 2PM Remaiders will be o sale util December 17. Most books i this sale are $3, with some special ad coffee table books priced higher. This is a great opportuity for early holiday shoppig at affordable prices. 6 Use Your Bea! DURING THE MONTH of September, the Frieds of Brooks Memorial Library will be amog three desigated orgaizatios that will beefit from the Brattleboro Food Co-op s Bag-A-Bea program. How It Works Wheever customers brig i their ow grocery bag, bulk food cotaier or travel mug, the Coop thaks them with a 5 credit or a bea that they ca drop ito oe of three cotaiers beefitig local oprofits. Each moth the Co-op selects three o-profits o a rotatig basis. For every poud of beas placed i the cotaier, over $14 is doated to that cotaier s orgaizatio. Doatios ca rage from $100 to $500! The Bag-A-Bea program works to egage shoppers i reducig waste by rewardig them with the opportuity to doate their savigs to a local o-profit. Both the eviromet ad the o-profits beefit! The Frieds of Brooks Memorial Library are grateful to the Co-op for this opportuity to beefit the library ad all the programs ad services that the Frieds provide to the commuity at large. Door Appreciatio Night THE BROOKS MEMORIAL LIBRARY BOARD of Trustees ad the Board of Directors of the Frieds of Brooks Memorial Library will be hostig a special get-together to thak those who doated to the Aual Appeal over the past year. The evet will be held at the library o Friday, September 21, from 6 to 8PM. May of the resources the library is able to provide would ot be possible without the geerous doatios to the Aual Appeal, as well as to other fudraisers held by the Frieds ad their supporters. Highlights of these resources will be showcased at Door Appreciatio Night. The Fie Arts Room will be opeed, ad recet restoratio work will be discussed. Tewksbury BROOKS MEMORIAL LIBRARY was the site for a woderful afteroo celebratig the life of beloved staff member, Debby Tewksbury. Debby s family ad frieds shared stories ad pictures of her, icludig videos of the delightful sogs she would sig at the close of the library day. Rice was publisher of the Brattleboro Reformer, ad her father Joh S. Hooper was editor ad the publisher of the Reformer from 1950 to Her book is a memoir based o diaries ad documets haded dow i her family ad a travelogue of two family joureys: her great gradparets trascotietal trai trip to Califoria i ad her retracig their route i Filled with rich details of time, place, ad culture, Mary A s compellig arrative is also a thoughtful accout of how the America West has chaged over the last 150 years. She is deeply cocered about the eviromet ad supports Joh Muir s philosophy of celebratig, ot coquerig, ature, so her book returs to this theme time ad agai. She also treats readers to her etertaiig ecouters o the trip ad escapades o her foldig bike. The evet is hosted by the Brattleboro Historical Society ad the Brooks Memorial Library i the library s upstairs Meetig Room o Wedesday, September 12, from 7PM to 9PM. Brooks Frieds ad the Fie Arts Cotiued from page 1 There are over 400 books i additio to the items i the catalog. We are ow lookig for expertise/iterest i the followig three areas: We eed someoe, or a small team, to pla ad mout mothly exhibits for adults ad for childre. Oe idea is to have the exhibits reflect social, evirometal, or other issues of curret iterest i our regio. We would like to trai a team of voluteers who could maitai the collectio. This would etail everythig from polishig ad auditig to more extesive work, uder supervisio, to preserve ad reew some of the pieces. I order for our collectio to become part of regioal efforts, we would like someoe to explore tools to improve the discovery of items i our collectio by outside orgaizatios. With this i mid, we expect to cotiue traiig sessios to produce ad ehace Wikipedia articles about our collectio. From there, we d like to lear how to author metadata etries i Wikipedia s database. These, i tur, might lead to icreased use of our library s website as oe compoet i a expadig web of kowledge i which Fie Arts might play a cetral role.
