The nex big improvemen being considered is an educaion building o house he Junior sailing school. The Nahaniel Reyburn Sailing School is a he core of our Clubs mission saemen. I is one of he bes ways we can keep our membership full of dedicaed boaers. Gonzalez, Model Shipwrigh phoography by John Baker T U.S. Brig Niagara Projec Began June 2009 he model was found in he basemen of he Erie Mariime Museum by Mark Weber, who, a ha ime, was educaion direcor of he EMM. I was very diry, damaged and in very poor condiion. Mark approached me in 2006 and asked if i could be refurbished and pu on permanen display. I acceped his challenge and sared repairing, resoring and cleaning he model. This ook approximaely hree monhs o accomplish and i wen on display in he bubble area in he main gallery where i remained unil he summer of As his locaion was in a high raffic area and he model was no encased i incurred damage by visiors, losing wo of is guns. In he summer of 2007 he EMM was approached by a movie company which needed a vessel for a film hey were producing and he Brig was seleced as he main ship in his movie. The movie company needed a model of he Brig for sudy and wih he permission of he Museum Direcor i was shipped off o New York Ciy. The movie was evenually cancelled and he model was reurned o he EMM. Upon inspecion i was found ha he model had suffered significan damage during he period i was gone and was considered no longer suiable for display a he EMM. A his ime, Capain Rybka, EMM Direcor, asked wheher I could resore he model o is original condiion and pu i on display in he gallery. I suggesed ha insead of resoring i o is original condiion I could reconfigure he model as a warship represenaive of he period of This decision o reconfigure he model urned ou o be a major challenge in many ways as he ship was originally buil as a RC coninued on page 26 s s A view of he sarboard side deck looking forward. 4 Invasive Species Problems on Lake Erie & Presque Isle Sae Park Solved by EYC Sailors... Everybody Wins! by Thomas Allen and Daniel Ray W e were recenly canoeing Presque Isle lagoons, discussing he world s problems and sharing a few brews. We observed phragmies (frag-mie-ease) he eigh-fooall, rapidly spreading invasive reed species which has aken over much of Presque Isle. Phragmies is an especially nasy invasive wih oxic roos which choke-ou all oher plans near hem. Why, we asked, does i seem all invasive species are so bad for he environmen and seem o offer no benefi when hey appear? For example, consider hese invasive aquaic animal species: Asian Carp - Due o heir large size and rapid rae of reproducion, hese fish could pose a significan risk o he Grea Lakes Ecosysem. To preven he carp from enering he Grea Lakes, he U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and ohers are working o insall a permanen elecric barrier beween he fish and Lake Michigan. Moving norh oward he Grea Lakes of years, hese fish can grow o 100 lbs. and push ou naive species. They are known o jump ino moving boas and scare he carp ou of fishermen. Sea Lamprey - Lampreys are among he oldes fish species on earh. These long, eel-shaped fish have mouhs like sucion cups, which hey use o aach hemselves o oher fish, and feed by sucking heir blood. Round Goby - Naive o he Caspian Sea, round gobies are ugly lile fish wih moled gray, olive green, and brown markings. They ou-compee naive fish for food and ea he eggs of lake rou and oher game fish. Round gobies are a nuisance o anglers because hey ea bai from hooks and anglers cach gobies insead of spor fish. To ge even, mos anglers oss gobies hey cach on he ground where hey can no longer seal he anglers bai. Zebra Mussels - Came o he Grea Lakes when ballas waer in a ship from Europe was discharged. They ea by filering large amouns of waer, which has resuled in a much clearer lake. This seemingly good news is ouweighed by he fac ha zebra mussels muliply rapidly and aach hemselves o boas, pilings, waer-inake pipes, and oher hard surfaces, causing much damage and expense. Afer pondering his for some ime (did we menion here was beer involved?), we reached he conclusion ha here MUST be some good o come ou of all of his, and ha Moher Naure s maser plan for hese species migh look somehing like his: Once he Asian Carp reach he Grea Lakes, hey will begin o ea Zebra Mussels. This change in die will undoubedly give he carp a disinc lobser-like flavor. Imagine fish ha ase like lobser ha jump ino your boa! Of course he improved flavor will also enice Sea Lampreys o aach hemselves only o Asian Carp, wih anoher posiive resul - he eel-like Sea Lampreys will grow o six fee long and ase like squid. So, now we ve go lobser flavored fish wih a large order of calamari ATTACHED TO THEM, and sill JUMPING INTO OUR BOATS! This jus keeps geing beer! Since he Round Goby also depends on he Zebra Mussels for food, hey will evenually be driven ou by he Asian Carp, eliminaing ye anoher problem. Afer furher research in he Presque Isle lagoons (and a few more brews), we believe ha he changes o he environmen brough abou by hese evens will likely impac he phragmies, as well. The changes in waer chemisry will ulimaely lead o he phragmies developing properies akin o barley, making i a free, naurally-occurring ingredien for premium beers (you expeced somehing else?) This will of course encourage he harvesing of he phragmies, once again allowing naive species of plan life o flourish. The annual phragmies harves will ake place every year on April 1s, celebraed wih lobser-carp and eel-calamari dinners, and of course los and los of beer!

These policies are effecive immediaely. 1) LODGING: All employees are encouraged o say wih friends and relaives while on business rips. If weaher permis, public areas such as parks can be used as emporary lodging sies. Bus erminals, rain saions and office lobbies may also provide sheler in periods of inclemen weaher. 2) TRANSPORTATION: Hich-hiking is he preferred mode of ravel in lieu of commercial ranspor. Luminescen safey vess will be issued o employees prior o heir deparure on such ravel. Airline ickes will be auhorized only in exreme circumsances, and he lowes fare will be used. For example, if a meeing is scheduled in Seale bu a lower fare can be obained by raveling o Deroi, he ravel o Deroi will be subsiued for he ravel o Seale. 3) MEALS: Expendiures for meals will be limied o an absolue minimum. I should be noed ha cerain grocery and specialy shops, such as Hickory Farms and General Nuriion Ceners, ofen provide free samples of promoional iems. Enire meals can be obained in his manner. Travelers also should become familiar wih indigenous roos, berries, and oher proein sources available a heir desinaions. If resaurans mus be used, ravelers are o paronize all you can ea salad bars. This is especially effecive for employees raveling ogeher, as one plae can be used o feed he enire group. Employees also are encouraged o bring heir own food on official ravel. Cans of una fish, Spam, and Beefaroni can be consumed a your leisure wihou he unnecessary boher of heaing or cosly preparaion. 4) MISCELLANEOUS: All employees are encouraged o devise innovaive echniques in an effor o save our budge dollars. One enerprising individual has already suggesed ha money could be raised during airpor layover periods, which hen could be used o defray expenses. In suppor of his idea, red caps will be issued o all employees prior o heir deparures so ha hey may earn ips by helping oher ravelers wih heir luggage. 6 Across from he beauiful Por Dover Yach Club is a long wooden pier. Tha pier has been here for many years and has welcomed numerous guess from he Erie Yach Club over he decades. The propery, owned and mainained by he Wamsley family has quie a hisory. Three EYC members, including our own P/C John G. Ashby s faher, John L. Ashby, George Dyke and Jack Herman leased he propery, Coleman Poin, for many years. During ha ime hose hree hired heir good Doverie friend, Jack Buck Wamsley, o pu in he docks, build he picnic ables (which are sill here), run he elecric and waer o he dock and mainain and oversee he improvemens and happenings on he Poin. The dock has been rebuil and updaed several imes over he years and hose of us who have enjoyed ha area are graeful o hose wih he vision and means o have made i possible. When I came in o he picure in he early 1980 s i was a favorie place for my Capain and I o sail and refresh from a busy and sressful work week. Buck Wamsley, a reired Keeper of he Long Poin Duck Huning Club coages, a ha ime was providing dockage for people a Coleman Poin. Among hose given dockage privileges were members of various Lake Erie clubs including EYC and Menor. EYC members, as examples, included he owners of Shadow, LunaSea and Soiree. As usually happens among sailors and boaers, hose individuals hen provided inroducions of oher boaers o he Wamsley family and dockage was expanded and privileges exended o include Airrelevan, Andicapp and ohers from he U.S. side of he lake. You have probably seen hese and oher boas docked for shor and exended visis o Por Dover, especially during race weeks. There were also Canadian boas ha were given privileges on he dock, such as Ulysses and you would usually see he Sea Queen or anoher Wamsley or Long Poin Company boa or barge ied securely o one side or he oher of he Vee shaped Coleman Poin. I remember, well, he 12 foo aluminum boa ha was always urned upside down on he grassy knoll of he Poin, covering from he elemens a 7 ½ horsepower Evenrude. I never knew unil wriing his aricle ha i had been lef here by he Ashby family. I hink we borrowed ha boa a couple imes for beauiful sighseeing rips up he river when we hadn hauled our dinghy Hor Deurve wih us. One of he hings I reasured abou Coleman Poin, and ha I ruly miss now, is he quie bu I also miss he small own digniy, neighborliness and old fashioned 50 s kind of friendliness. These are hings I sill find myself searching for in oday s world and hey are no as easy o find anymore. When Dave Wamsley, Buck and Joan Wamsley s son, ook over as Keeper of he Long Poin Coages, and afer his faher passed on o he big huning club, he face of Coleman s Poin began o change. Dave brough a club house o he poin via barge and began he process of remodeling and making i a proper place for boh Canadian and U.S. guess and Wamsley syle paries. Access was always by inviaion only and when Dave and his beauiful wife Penny, he daugher of Harry Barre who wroe The Lore s and Legends of Long Poin, began cooking here was sure o be no one presen who would go unsaisfied in qualiy or quaniy of delicious food, wheher i was burgers, maple flavored sausage or freshly caugh perch. This wrier was honored o have made a iny conribuion o he Coleman Poin hisory by designing heir burgee logo. The color was deep maroon and he logo was a whie ouline circle wih COLEMAN POINT YACHT CLUB in whie leers encircling an ouer circle wih an inner circle divided ino four quarers, each quarer wih a whie ouline figure depicing somehing significan o he Club and he Family - as follows: a duck, a fish, a sail boa and a working boa. Dave Wamsley, when he designed and finished he beauiful bar ha separaes he kichen area from he gahering area of he club made sure ha each of hose iems was depiced in some way as par of ying everyhing ogeher. Dave Wamsley also added on o he wo bedrooms and one bah club house, a large deck opped off wih a 20 wide saircase nine seps high, leading o he grounds. Dave s hough was ha he saircase would make a wonderful phoographic prop for large group picures, and i has been. The iem ha ouched my Capain s hear he mos was Buck s son keeping his faher s chair on he dock. From he picure included wih his aricle you will see Dave Sample, who, before his deah in 2008 was a long ime member of he EYC, a very capable Capain of Soiree, pas crew member for oher Capains a EYC, recipien of he Thompson Trophy and a very good friend of Buck, Joan, Dave, Penney and he enire Coleman Poin gang and coningen. Since ha ime, so-called Craf Brewed beers have increased dramaically in populariy. Wha exacly is a Craf Beer, you ask? According o he Brewer s Associaion: An American craf brewer is small, independen and radiional. Small: Annual producion of 6 million barrels of beer or less Independen: Less han 25% of he craf brewery is owned or conrolled by an alcoholic beverage indusry member who is no hemselves a craf brewer. Tradiional: A brewer who has eiher an all mal flagship (he beer which represens he greaes volume among ha brewers brands) or has a leas 50% of is volume in eiher all mal beers or in beers which use adjuncs o enhance raher han lighen flavor. Here are a few addiional facs abou Craf Beers from he Brewer s Associaion: Growh of he craf brewing indusry in 2010 was 11% by volume and 12% by dollars compared o growh in 2009 of 7.2% by volume and 10.3% by dollars. The ac of sock burning began as a radiion in he own of Annapolis, MD in he mid 1980 s, according he Annapolis Mariime Museum. I is celebraed in conjuncion wih he Vernal/spring equinox. An equinox, as defined by Webser s Dicionary, is eiher of he wo imes each year (as abou March 21 and Sepember 23) when he sun crosses he equaor and day and nigh are everywhere on earh of approximaely equal lengh. The Vernal (spring) Equinox marks he beginning of he warm weaher season for boaers. In he boaing communiy, i is highly frowned upon o wear socks wih your shoes beween he spring and fall equinox. The ac of burning socks began wih he boayard employees who worked on he boas year round. Their socks would ge filled wih pain, sawdus, fiberglass, and oher maerials hroughou he winer monhs and come spring hey li heir socks on fire as a way o show heir hard work was done and he boas were ready for anoher season. In Annapolis, here is one excepion o his sockless rule: If on a given day he emperaure drops below 30 Fahrenhei and he wind guss over 17 knos, one can wimp ou and don socks. 10 Irresponsible boaer going oo fas in No Wake zone. No wake means NO WAKE! Mos people who drive are familiar wih (or should be!) he cusoms and radiions of couresy on he roads. For hose of us who spend ime on he waer however, we mus remember a similar code of conduc exiss for he waer as well. Obviously, he rules of he waer are going o dicae how you operae your vessel underway in order o preven collision. Bu even if no risk of collision exiss, you are no free o do whaever you wan when operaing in he viciniy of oher vessels. Jus as here are social norms you re expeced o know on land, i is criical ha you know cerain basic rules of boaing eiquee if you re going o be spending any ime a all on he waer. While i may feel like you re he capain of your nauical domain, remember ha a lile consideraion for fellow waer lovers can go a long way oward avoiding any misundersandings or conflics. I m sure we ve all experienced road rage - i s no pleasan. Knowing and following he basic rules of boaing eiquee can help you avoid ha unpleasanness and make boaing even more pleasurable - for you, your crew, your guess and your fellow boaers. Wih his in mind, we hough i would be beneficial o us all if we published a series of aricles ha would serve as kind of a refresher course in boaing eiquee. Wach Your Wake. While you re blissfully cruising away, your vessel is kicking up disrupive waves. Those waves migh be fun if you re a surfer or a wakeboarder, bu for oher boaers, hey can be annoying and poenially even dangerous. Besides being a rude inerrupion, a speeding vessel s wake can cause passengers on anoher boa s deck o lose heir balance. I is even worse if anyone onboard happens o be handling somehing dangerous - ho coffee, for example - your wake could cause a serious problem. The mos common ype of personal injury in he BoaUS Insurance claim files involves passengers (ypically over age 50, bu anyone can be injured) who is seaed near he bow and goes airborne afer slamming ino a wake. Passengers, especially older passengers and children, should be seaed amidships where here is less moion. A warning o your passengers and crew is also recommended. A simple, Hold on. Boa wake! should suffice. Remember you are responsible for your own wake and any damage done by i. If you ve caused boas o bang ino each oher or knocked someone s grill off heir deck or oherwise harmed heir propery, you re he one on he hook for he damages. Tradiionally, i is common pracice o approach oher vessels on he sarboard side. When overaking a slower vessel in open waer, do so wih as much room as deph condiions allow and slow your speed, if necessary, o avoid rocking he oher vessel. There is nohing worse han being below a anchor or in a slow rawler or sail boa, cooking breakfas, and being suddenly overaken in close quarers by a wake-hrowing boaer. Especially if he wake causes he ho bacon grease and coffee o be hrown around he galley. When you re he overaking boa and don have he room o give anoher boa a wide berh, use VHF Channel 16 and/or your horn o signal your inenions (one shor blas if you re overaking he oher boa on is sarboard side, wo blass if you re planning o pass on is por side). Cross he wake quickly (don ride he waves), bu be aware of your own boa s wake. If you re being overaken, come compleely off plane so ha your sern is level. I should be remembered ha someimes you may need o slow your speed o accommodae he overaking vessel. If you are proceeding a 8 knos, he passing boa can only slow o abou 10 knos o sill have enough speed difference o pass successfully. However, a ha speed he overaking vessel sill hrows an uncomforable wake. You may need o slow o 4 knos o allow he overaking vessel o pass a 6 knos which allows for a much smaller wake. Sail boas have righ of way, in as hey are less maneuverable han power boas and seerage and reacion imes are low. If you are overaking a vessel under sail, if possible, overake hem well o leeward or pass asern in a crossing siuaion, so as no o block heir wind. When boaing in congesed areas i is essenial ha you know he rules of he road. Driving your boa on a busy weekend is similar o driving in rush hour raffic on he freeway. I is essenial ha you know and follow all rules and regulaions. Proper eiquee (no o menion he law) requires ha boaers observe no-wake zones and all oher boaing rules. No wake means NO WAKE. The firs rule is o slow down so ha he boa is level (wihou using rim abs) and he size of he wake is negligible. Look back a he wake you re creaing. You can help o reduce he size of your boa s wake by posiioning passengers oward he cener of he boa o keep i level. Too much weigh af lowers he sern and increases he size of he wake. Always power down when enering all marinas. The wake of a power boa can cause damage o oher boas ha are ied up in he marina and cause accidens o boas arriving and leaving he marina. Wakes are disrupive o berhed vessels as well as o people on he dock. Buffeing waves from arriving and deparing boas can make i hard for people o balance when heir dock is bouncing up and down. (remoe conrol) and was no accuraely rigged. A crew of modelers was assembled and we began his projec in June of 2009 a he presen locaion on he mezzanine a The EMM. The plan required ha we reduce he model o jus he hull and build his vessel up from scrach. We began by earing her down o he exising hull. Afer removing all op hamper we began he acual reconsrucion. The challenges ha we have encounered during his reconsrucion have been innumerable. All he rigging, sanding and running, had o be rendered from raw maerials which includes he deck furniure, sails, rigging, iron, and brass work.
