1 BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 3 rd December The Christmas Primestock Market is a two day affair at Bakewell. Sunday was the show and judging of Cattle and Sheep together with the HPLS Carol Service. These two events attracted literally hundred of farming families on Sunday afternoon to watch the judging or participate in the Carol Service or in many instances do a bit of both. Festivities were rounded off with a Hog Roast and Mince Pies. Judging of the Cattle was kindly undertaken by Mark Spencer, MP of Spring Lane Farm, together with Mick Lilley of Kirkby in Ashfield The champion beast a Heifer from H Naylor and Son of Kirk Langley made 640p/kg and was purchased by Messrs Woolley Bros of Sheffield. The Sheep judge was Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats who selected his champions a pen of Lambs from DJ Saxby of Litton, these sold at 500p/kg ( 226/head) to D Prince of Highfield Farm Shop, Stonedge, Ashover. For full details of the Show stock please see details of the separate report. In overall terms there were 585 Cattle and 2,032 Sheep on offer. Despite the excitement of the show the more commercial sections of the market carried on pretty much as usual. There were 270 head of Store and Breeding Cattle which sold on a decent trade to a full ring of willing bidders. Steers to 1,180, hfrs 1,160, Feeding Bulls to 810 and In Calf Beef heifers to 1, OTM and Feeding Cows reached 204p and 1,901 per head with the average looking very respectable at 100.4p. The Calf section pulled it s socks up after last weeks small entry with 90 this week. Bulls to 350 and Heifers 180. In the Cull Sheep department 387 head sold to a top of 135 to average Which leaves to the Finished Cattle section where there were 98 head on offer including the show cattle which would influence the averages somewhat. The overall average emerging at 208.3p/kg

3 Below is a Poem read out by Philip Holland at the Carol Service on Sunday "Christmas Party at the Committee for Climate Change." by F. Philip Holland, Op.0351, 56L, The Committee for Climate Change is planning a party, but with no feasting, no crackers, no sherry, and no fun. They've all agreed NOT to be happy, or hale, or hearty, and to share just one small, sesame-seed bun. There'll be no silly quizzes, no musical chairs, no charades, and no spinning-the-plate. There'll be no party hats, no chocolate éclairs, in case those make them put on some weight. The Committee's decided our food is unhealthy, and that starving is far better to do. That farming is just for the fat and the wealthy, and all you can get is methane from animal poo. The Committee looks on farmland as 'Managed Greens'; but with no grazing, no harvesting, no spreading of muck. They think people should eat foreign-imported beans, and think home-grown food has an 'old-fashioned' look. At the Committee's Christmas Party Celebration, they'll be serving tofu, quinoa, wild rice and nut-roast, on disposable plates, with minimal preparation, with cold soya milk from waxed cartons for a Christmas toast. The Committee says farm animal numbers must be cut; (Quote) : "Between twenty to fifty-per-cent have to go, We must plant more trees and eat less meat."...but, who can chew wood? and how long does it take to grow? Well there's one thing they haven't thought clearly about; Will Santa get rid of "fifty-per-cent" of his faithful reindeer? If "fifty-per-cent" of children get no presents there'll be such a shout, Especially from the off-spring of The Committee, I fear. But, seriously, we all know where our 'fallen stock' goes, So will pet-food manufacturers produce "fifty-per-cent" less? Will people with pets have to rid "fifty per cent" of those? Who will say which cat can be kept, and which dog is excess? It's the imported food that's bad for our "Climate Change"; all those air-miles and sea-miles burning toxic petroleum fuels. Yet they still chop down rain forests, which is mad and strange, then take food from poor, native folk, to justify "Trading Rules". Well, there's one thing certain about Derbyshire farmers, We're hard-working folk in brown boots and green wellies; It's our job to grow food, even for those who would harm us, because we wouldn't want anyone with nowt in their bellies.

4 So, for Christmas we recommend: local, roast turkey, or beef, or lamb, pigs-in-blankets, veg from our arable farmers, honey-roast ham, pork pie, trifle, and if the weather's murky, a good splash of whisky in tea, just to calm us. If you're invited to The Committee for Climate Change Party, don't go: you'll find the food's poor and the table's quite bare. So please buy British Food and be happy and hale and hearty, because we know what's good,..but, it just might become rare... I don't mean to upset anyone that's listening here, Though I know what I feel, and I mean what I say. I was asked to write poetry about Christmas cheer, please consider carefully what you've heard here today. "Don't kick the bread basket when it's full", we sometimes hear, "No point in kicking it when it's empty", is what we should say. I wish you all Merry Christmas, and a Prosperous New Year, Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All,...forever,... not just today. F. Philip Holland, Five-Bar-Gate Publishing, 2018
