1 BAKEWELL MARKET MONDAY 16th July 2018 The soft refreshing rain enjoyed in the Bakewell area last Friday must have done some good, but there is very little more forecast in the coming week and that which we have had seems to have evaporated. Everyone seems to have adapted to the Mediterranean conditions and there were 637 cattle and 1522 Sheep on offer, all well received and with notably better prices in certain departments. There have been concerns expressed about the Cattle trade, but 325 Store and Breeding Cattle sold on an excellent trade from start to finish with plenty of demand at all levels and some excellent results achieved. Steers sold to 1270, Heifers 1110 and Feeding Bulls 930. The Breeding Section was Boosted by a consignment of Pedigree Charolais with Cow and Calf outfits to 2100, in calf females 1550 and the Stock Bull More Finished Cattle about 118 in total with top figures of 234p and In the OTM and Feeding Cow section top figures were 188p and 1718 per head, the overall average 117.5p. Another useful show of 87 Calves, Bulls selling to 450 and Heifers 365. Turning to the Sheep department the 959 Lambs sold on a better trade than anticipated with top figures 346p/kg and per head. It is interesting to note that the overall average at 185.6p was slightly more than the SQQ figure at 185.1p. In the Cull Sheep section Ewes sold to 120 ave

The best Cows remain a wonderful trade with strong competition but the plainer sorts are less than they were in May/June. Top Cow was a lovely pure Blue Cow from Messrs Richardson, Yeaveley selling at 188p to gross David Critchlow, Sheen had a superb Limmy at 170p ( 1329) with Nigel Birch at 168p.
