1 BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 14 th January The open weather continues, but the odd snowflake is appearing on the weather apps for coming weeks. Solid market entries at 632 Cattle and 1,815 Sheep. Trade for the 344 Store & Breeding Cattle was outstanding with Steers to 1305, Heifers 1155 and Feeding Bulls 900. Buyers were out in force and more cattle could readily have been sold. In the Finished Cattle section the 97 head looked well sold with top figures 246p and 1530 as a barometer of trade the 44 Heifers averaged 194.9p. 117 OTM and Feeding Cows on offer with trade usefully better. Top figures 164p and 1167 and the average noticeably improved at 107.9p. In the Calf department there were more customers operating for the 74 arrivals on offer. Bulls to 395, Heifers 325. There were fewer Hoggs than anticipated with only 1096 forward and buyers had to work hard to secure their orders as evidenced by the prices. Top figures 245p and and a cracking SQQ average of 207p. In the Cull section 719 Ewes sold to 138 to average Forthcoming Events Thursday 17 th January: Store Sheep included within the Usual Thursday Market with special entries of 250 In lamb Ewes & 250 Feeding Hoggs already entered, further entries invited. 3 117 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS overall average 107.9p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles) Another good turnout of Cows with trade improved on the week again, up 7 pence this week with certainly more spark to trade. Top call today was 164p twice for OTM Heifers from S Kidd ( 1167) and AJ Steeples ( 993) plenty of good cows today over 140 with 37 of todays entry being kept for further feeding on 8 different accounts, competition at its very best. 67 Black & White and ex dairy cows - ave 100.1p Trade right back up but more so at the bottom end with the leanest cows looking the dearest. 9 719 Ewes and Cull Rams Another very good show numbers wise with the quality of the top 20% extremely good and the trade followed suit. Best big Texels from Jason Craddock to 138 with others out of the North at 133 and 129. Big Suffolks from Steve Buckley to 114 and other strong Texels between 104 and 113 per head. Generally, the trade held well but the half meated Mules were harder to place. Strong Tups very good to sell to a top of 122 and 108 both for Texels.
