KINGSWOOD NEWS Spring 2018 March 15th 2018 NEWS & NOTICES Kingswood House School, 56 West Hill, Epsom, Surrey, KT19 8LG School Office: Sports Line: Study Centre: Dear Parents Just a week ago, I was in the idyllic surroundings of Jersey with the company of three members of staff and nearly forty boys from Years 7 & 8 for their annual tour. Whilst this trip originated in the 1970s as a means for independent schools on the island to play fixtures against their counterparts from the mainland, and, incidentally, KHS was one of the founding schools to be invited, it has since developed into a marvellous all-round experience for the boys. They are away from home for five days - and away from technology at the same time! They learn to work as part of a team, on and off the sports field, and grow manifestly in independence and resilience. Under the watchful eye of the teaching staff, the boys are afforded responsibility for themselves and indeed for others. Naturally, there are ups and downs but that in itself is a key part of the learning process. I enjoyed interacting with the boys out of the normal school environment and perhaps my favourite moment was seeing them use a few minutes to play on one of the beautiful beaches, free from any kind of device, harnessing their natural creativity and energy some were playing rugby, others were building a cityscape in the sand (picture below). Like us on facebook Kingswood House School My thanks to Mr Cowie, Mr Russell and Mr Bailey for their unstinting patience and good humour throughout. Yours sincerely Follow us on Follow Mr Duncan Murphy Headmaster

Brooklands Museum Reception, Years 1 and 2 had a great trip to Brooklands Museum. They were all lucky enough to sit in a racing car and have a tour of Concorde. Mrs Roberts Facetime 6M have been learning how to tell the time and made their own clocks to help. They are doing brilliantly and will be going on to understand the 24 hour clock. Miss McSweeney
Weald and Downland Living Museum Year 3 visited the Weald and Downland Living Museum in Sussex. In the morning, the boys had a workshop on Food Through The Ages and made and sampled some delicious Anglo Saxon bread! In the afternoon, they explored a variety of reconstructed homes through the ages, including an Anglo Saxon village house and a Victorian labourer s cottage. They also found out what it would have been like to be a child in the past and decided that they are very happy to be living in 2018! Mrs Dean and Miss McSweeney Tom Palmer Visit We were delighted to welcome author Tom Palmer to the school last Thursday. Tom first visited us five years ago and has kept in touch with the school ever since. A huge fan of sports, especially football, he is the author of three Puffin football children s series, Football Academy, Foul Play and The Squad. Tom s new KS2 history series, the Defenders trilogy, features hauntings from the Iron Age, Roman, Anglo Saxon and Viking periods. His Ghost Stadium won the 2014 Leicester Libraries Our Best Book Award. Tom spent the morning working with pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 and signing copies of his books. He also spoke to our senior boys about his writing career. Mr March
The Easter Experience. On Wednesday morning Year 5 walked to Christ Church to take part in the Easter Experience. The Spinnaker team took the boys through Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday. Each event was beautifully staged and was interactive. Having arrived in Jerusalem the boys moved into the temple, then took part in the Last Supper. They moved on to the Garden of Gethsemane and then were involved in the trial before Pilate. The boys then approached the cross and finally the empty tomb. It was a very effective workshop and the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the story telling. They came away with a little book The Easter Poem. Mrs Weston Mini First Aid Helen Stafford, from Mini First Aid, gave Year 3 a fantastic introduction to first aid. The boys found out what to do if they find someone unconscious, learnt to treat cuts and burns and discovered how to help someone if they are choking. We definitely have some budding doctors and paramedics in the making! Many thanks to the KHA who funded this very worthwhile and inspiring session. Mrs Dean
Many thanks to Mr Seager who took this photograph we now know that Kingswood House is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! On Tuesday, Reception class had a fun French lesson learning their numbers and colours. The boys used coloured card and objects in class to identify the French words for red, blue, green, black, brown, pink and yellow. With the use of cut out numbers they were able to say in French the words for the numbers The lesson ended with a power point and song about numbers. The boys couldn't resist dancing and singing along. Well done to the boys who now have some more useful French vocabulary. Madame Swift We have welcomed back Mr Fergus Darlow, former Head Boy, this week. Fergus will be with us for 9 weeks during his study leave from Chichester University. You may see him around school as he will be assisting staff in many areas. Once a KHS boy always a KHS boy!
Mete T (8C) swam at the David Moyce Gala in Dorking recently. He won a silver Medal in the 50 metre Freestyle in his age category and achieved a Personal Best and Surrey county time. He also secured a Bronze Medal in the 50 Metre Fly with a PB and Surrey competitive time. Well done Mete! In Class with Reception and Year 1 Today the boys made fruit salad. They learnt how to use a knife safely and cut up the fruit in small bite sizes pieces. They all tasted the different fruits even the boys who said they did not like a specific fruit. Cameron and Henry really enjoyed the Pomegranate. We all enjoyed playing the Fruit Salad game. Mrs Marskell
Lower Prep were very busy during World Book Week. Year s 1 and 2 took part in a prose reading competition. They all read a passage from their chosen book to Mr March. The winners were Cameron Edwards - Year 1 and Frankie Larter - Year 2. Well done boys! Cameron Edwards - Year 1 Frankie Larter - Year 2 The children from Lower Prep also took part in a sponsored readathon and raised a staggering for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Thank you for all your support. Miss Walliss Mother s Day Design 6M boys loved making their Mums Mother's day cards. They all chose creative designs and wrote special messages of thanks. We discussed why Mother's Day is celebrated and where it originated. I hope there were lots of smiles last Sunday! Miss McSweeney
Jersey Sports Report Wednesday 7th March Chris Cook Football Tournament (A, B & C Competition) We entered one A team, two B teams and two C teams into the football tournament, meaning that all 38 boys were involved in the tournament. This year it was run by Mr Cowie, and was taken on by Kingswood House as a whole. The A team performed brilliantly in the group winning two games and losing one, meaning they qualified for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, in the semi-finals we came up short against the eventual runners-up of the tournament Belmont, losing 1-0. Josh Johns performed fantastically well all afternoon, and led the team to their victories with the superb finishing of Leo Wood. Unfortunately, we could not create enough clear cut chances in the semi-final. The two B teams performed really well. The B2 team, were a league above what they should be playing, but still played great football all afternoon. Although, not managing to turn over any of the teams they came up against, they pushed all of them throughout their games and scored goals to make it nerve racking. Jack Hutcheson played particularly well with the aid of Sam Slaney. The B1 team, had some great success in their side of the tournament, although losing their first game to Belmont, managed to make their way to the final to face Belmont again. In this game, James Totham and the B1 team ran riot, scoring 3 quick goals in the last 5 minutes of the game, meaning they were victorious of the B team competition. Particular mention goes to James Totham and Rhys Battrick for their performance in this tournament. The C team competition went down to the wire, with the C1 team needing to win their last game against St. Anselm s to secure victory. After a throw in from Kingswood House, a large hoof from a St. Anslem s player from the half way line managed to make its way over the KHS goalkeeper, and the scores ended 1-0, therefore meaning that the C1 team came runners up of their competition. Again, both the C1 and C2 teams were playing leagues above their ability, but still managed to hold their own and played really good football for the entire afternoon. Well done to Joe Offen, who gained the C team player of the afternoon. Thursday 8th March Indoor 6-a-side Hockey Fort Regent (A & B team) KHS entered both an A & B team into the tournament at the impressive Fort Regent this year, and due to the lack of warm-up fixtures, struggled. Unfortunately, due to the snow the week before Jersey, our warm-up 6 a side fixtures were called off and therefore we had no preparation time. However, both teams played really well considering this, and could have easily made it into the knockout stages if they had finished their chances and held onto some early leads. Well done to Conrad Burton for winning the Hockey player of the afternoon. Friday 9th March Travtel U13 7 s St. Michael s Jersey (A team) After two glorious days of sunshine, the weather closed in for the afternoon at St. Michael s where the weather was dreadful. Torrential rain set in for the afternoon, which did not allow for running rugby. Kingswood House came up against the hosts in their first match and played extremely well. With big carries from Mete Tuncer and Eddie Monk, and huge hits from Jack Hutcheson, we came off victorious without really even breaking a sweat. This set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The entire team were relentless in defence and after seeing off both Skippers Hill and Ballard in the remaining group games went into the main competition knock out stages. We were set to face St Michael s UK the victors from the previous year. We started slowly, but managed to gain momentum through Josh Johns storming runs with pace and Conrad Burton moving the ball from the floor with great speed. We won this game comfortably and went into the final for the first time for a long time, if not ever We came up against a very strong Belmont side, who pressurised us with the ball in attack, and were relentless in defence. Despite our best efforts, it was a step too far. However, a well-deserved runners-up medal was rewarded and the KHS staff could not have been prouder. It was a fantastic afternoon for KHS rugby and one that Mr Cowie will remember for a long time to come. It was fantastic to see Year 7s, Rhys Battrick and Sam Slaney involved, and getting the experience needed to hopefully lead next year s team to the same fate. Particular mention must go to Jack Hutcheson for his tackling which astounded all coaches on the side line. His technique and aggression was second to none. Another mention must go to Rugby Captain Eddie Monk for his constant determination and never say die attitude. He led the team well with 7 s captain Conrad Burton to the final, and performed well all afternoon. Well done to the boys that played for KHS played for one of the England Teams on the Saturday morning: England A Team Eddie Monk (Prop) Mete Tuncer (No. 8) Conrad Burton (Scrum Half) Jack Hutcheson (Outside Centre) Josh Johns (Sub) Ollie Liechti (Sub) England B Team Leo Wood (Wing) Rhys Battrick (Sub) Sam Slaney (Sub) Mr Cowie

Speaking English The words we think in, sing in, talk in, which feed our imagination, which tell us what we are - where did they all come from? How did a few tribal dialects on a northern island become the billion-tongued language of Modern English? Why does the spelling have to be so difficult? Our speaker is a professional actor so all be delivered with a flourish, and a lot of audience participation. March 25th : Reporting the News Every day there are happenings good and bad all over the world : calamities like floods, but also great sporting achievements, miraculous rescues and always there are politicians debating how we should be ruled. Who decides what is important enough to be on the TV news? Helen Wade, BBC reporter, will show some footage and discuss how it is influencing how we think. Try being a reporter for a day, learn how to check sources and then imagine you are in a war zone. You might also find yourself being interviewed or being the interviewer. Where else but Surrey Explorers could you have the chance to be taught by a TV reporter how the news is made and how to do it yourself? Entertaining and hands-on, this workshop will also make you a more discerning TV viewer. All Sunday morning meetings take place at Kingswood House School, 56 West Hill, Epsom KT19 8LG. Free parking.
