1 UNDER 12A Issue No 14 - Date: 26/07/08 We still need sponsors for some of our players on the Players Sponsor Board in the rooms. Each colt player is required to have only one sponsor. Cost to sponsor a Colts player is $100. Each senior player can have either one sponsor of $200 or two sponsors of $100 each. Sponsors who provide details of their business will be allocated a page in the Club s business directory which will be on display in the rooms and on the website and will go into a weekly prize draw during the awards. JAMES HOWELL CELEBRATED HIS 50 TH GAME FOR THE DALES ON SATURDAY
2 President s Pen CALL TO ARMS Ian McCallum This Sunday the senior club will host finals games (juniors) for the first time in many years. There are three games involved with first game starting at The club is calling on volunteers to assist on the day. This is not only a fundraising day it is also an occasion to showcase our club. Apart from the usual administration positions of gatekeepers, timekeepers etc we will need to provide a BBQ and Drinks tents as well as Ronnie Fisher running her canteen. We only have week one of the finals and it is important to future opportunities to have the day run smoothly. If you can help out please let either myself or Ray Seddon know. If you can t I urge you to have a look at our schedule in the centre pages and make it along to one of their five finals games. A special thank you to the players for showing their respects last Saturday with the wearing of the black armbands following the passing of under 14 player and senior water carrier Matt Fotia s grandfather. Both Matt and Jake Wigney have slotted in with the senior side as water carriers and become a part of the team. A huge thank you to the many donors for our Auction Night last week. Whilst our numbers were down the night turned out to be both entertaining and a financial success. The International, our major sponsor was extremely cooperative and nursed us through a hectic last 24 hours. Congratulations to James Howell (featured on the front cover) on his 50 th game with the Dales. Well done Howelly. Finally to the senior side who are now showing their true ability. Well done on another excellent victory over 4th placed Scoresby. I would suggest that our opposition over the next five weeks will be wary as they approach finals time. Our last 5 games have been outstanding and every player is to be congratulated on their efforts. Their attitude has been first class. We got our match ups right and controlled the midfield. We still missed some easy shots. Some ball handling errors cost us goals against, but we will take a strong 29 point win any day. Brad Condor continued his good form and was dominant at ruck-rover; Peter Beaumont was classy; and Cam Linford was at the bottom of every pack. Dan Toohey had 25 touches and was continually taken back to the goal square. Another lazy 30 + touches, and the sealer in the last, to Sean Toohey; while Andrew Walsh dominated in the ruck. That is what I asked for today and that is what I got 22 guys that gave their all. We gave them a start for the first 10 minutes but then started to play some pretty good footy. In the 2 nd quarter our skipper stepped up with 3 centre clearances in succession resulting in 3 goals, with Bourkey getting on the end of it. The second half saw us battle it out right to the end. We turned a 20 deficit in round #1, back down to only 6 goals today which is a pretty good indication of the improvement in our side. Good work with a very undermanned team. We got back to within 4 goals early in the last quarter, only to get blown off the park after that. Scoresby are a very good unit and we can t let them run freely as we did in the finish. We won the contested footy hands down; we won the tackle count; but we didn t use the footy well enough. Scoresby s use was clinical and that was the difference. Solid contributions from Martin and Whelan; and a good blanketing job by Morgan. We had other good contributions but most of those weren t consistent enough to sustain the pressure that s needed against the big guns. SEASON GOALS: Andrew Medley 28, Darcy Spurling 21, Daniel Cope 20, Lachlan Anderson 20, Jake Taylor 13 In a game that couldn t improve our position unfortunately we played like that! There was a very strong wind to one end which gave South Wantirna an even chance at us. We had first use of it and were unable to capitalise and that proved our downfall although we led for 90% of the game we couldn t hold on. The 2 Jakes and Syd were terrific with the rest playing a good quarter here and there. We now focus on the final series to get this far with 15 to 18 players is to be commendable, but with our list growing and we know what our capabilities are, and I m sure there are some very nervous teams waiting to play us. SEASON GOALS: Kyle Staples 22, Jake Clements 17, Brendan Lee 15, Chase Coley 11. ENCOURAGEMENT: Josh Johnson, Michael Gills, Nicholas Hearn, Ryan Donald Today we played a well drilled top side in Rowville at home, the boys were very flat in the first half but kept working at it. After half time the boys were a lot better they started to run and work for each other but just couldn t get the reward on the scoreboard. We missed 4 or 5 set shorts from in front of goal. Well done boys on a good season you have all come a long way the next step for you boys next year is to play finals. Thanks to Phil Smith (assistant coach), Frank Conte (runner), Gordon Porter (trainer), Craig Kennedy (team manager) and all the parents, most of all too all the boys for playing. Well done! Brendan Johnson Coach The 11 s played Blackburn and had a narrow loss as well. Like the 10 s they can look back on a successful year and prepare for full on footy in 09. The 12 s had only their second loss of the year against Blackburn. They meet again in the Qualifying final and are keen to turn the tables. The 13 s had a tough final game against a well drilled Rowville. They finish the year 7th but feel confident they can advance on that in The 14 s had a ten goal win down at Vermont. They too play Blackburn this week in the Qualifying Final and are keen to get into another finals campaign. The Blue are struggling to field 18 fit players and lost by a mere 5 points. This has relegated them to fourth and they will be fired up this week to beat North Ringwood in the Elimination Final. The Gold also lost narrowly to Ringwood but have qualified for finals. They are fully pumped and keen to get into Waverly Blues this week. The 16 s suffered a narrow loss but only have 16 players. They will be keen to get into the finals and finish their junior footy on a high. A special mention to Brad Harvey and Kieran Harper from the 16 s. Both boys qualified for the Vic Metro Under 16 s and play in the national carnival in Queensland over the next few weeks. 11 The Home and Away season has come to a close and I am thrilled to announce we have five teams in the finals. Our Under 12 s and 14 s both finished 2nd, the 15 Blue 4th and the 15 Gold and 16 s 5th. This is a fantastic performance. From here anything could happen. The season concluded with a great awards night on Sunday. Again we had a With President great number in attendance even with the poor Terry Foley weather. We all managed to squeeze inside and enjoyed great schnitzel rolls. On Sunday we took part in the Call to Arms campaign and raised almost $400 for this cause. The season has ended just in time for the Gateway ground. It has just made it through the season and is looking pretty tired now. We hope many supporters of Lilydale Seniors and Juniors can make it to our finals. We are spread all over the place for our games. See the middle pages of this copy of the Flanker for all the details or check the EFL website for times and venues. I look forward to seeing everyone at the finals and the Presentation Day & AGM in late August. Our final round saw only 2 sides win but 6 of the other 7 lost by narrow margins. The 9 s traveled to Rowville and had a great win. These boys are ready for next years full ground footy. The 10 s had a narrow loss to Rowville at home. But they look back on a successful season highlighted by the Lightning Premiership win. 13 Falcon Swoops c After a rocky lead up, last Saturday night s Falconian Auction function turned out to be a terrific. There was some frantic recruiting of numbers during the day and a huge thanks to those who came along. Advertising of the function will be improved next year. Plenty of highlights from the night. Not the least was the comedian doing some impromptu interviews. Picked out Breesy with the huge frame and generous display of artwork and picked him as obviously a tradie as an occupation. Brought the house down when Breesa declared himself as being into menswear. Wazza was in good form. Won two raffle prizes and tried to claim a third in a blatant attempt at fraud!! Hec Cruickshank enjoyed himself and seriously considered bidding for the large screen plasma TV. He decided not to when Mullet pointed out to him that the object was actually a dressing table with a 42 mirror. In all fairness to H he was sitting at the back of the room and his age should be taken into account. Travis Dennehy came to play. Went head to head with Wazza for the week s holiday at Inverloch and came home with the prize. However it was the Melbourne Storm tickets that brought a smile. Trav scored the TWO tickets in the Corporate Box (courtesy of Central Scaffolding) for the game and then promptly invited five team mates to come along!!! At last count Mullet was desperately trying to arrange another The comeback kid Luke Ewart was in fine form. He played his first game for five years filling in for the twos. Strode around the forward line (because he couldn t run after ¼ time) and finished the game with a long goal from twenty metres out!! He followed that up with donning the skins to prevent his body from seizing up and then going into full rehab by drinking bucket loads of liquid refreshments at the Auction night. Completed the evening by purchasing a pushbike and wanting to ride it home a t 12.30am!! Common sense prevailed. The mercurial Johnny McKay did what John tends to do and turned $250 into $1300. He bought one of the five keys (the one that opened the lock) to purchase the wiz-bang Surround Sound System. His explanation for the key selection was that it was the smallest key which once again reinforces the theory that size doesn t count. In the final game for the year the Under 9 s took on Rowville and for the second week in a row we played a much bigger side. But this week the boys played fantastic football, they pressured the opposition every time they got the ball and played as a team.
