1 \ From the Pres. Who would have believed the weather could turn so bad for round 1 of the Men s Div 1 comp! Absolutely atrocious conditions met our U14 Div 1 side on Saturday morning. The rains slowly settled but the blustery wind challenged all teams. It was a great success on field, of course, with wins to all sides. Our U14 Division 2s also had their first win of the season. I must congratulate Ollie Small who has agreed to help this side with coaching. Ollie would be playing senior footy had he not suffered a major knee injury during the preseason. This is the club spirit which makes our club strong. Well done to our senior coach Scott Tidemann for running the Pancreatic Cancer Fundraiser on Saturday. This remains an excellent cause, and close to our club. Spend a moment reading more about Scott in this edition. Our season launch brought good numbers to the Clubrooms on Saturday night. Thanks, must go to Lauren Scott for organising this, and I remind everyone that our social functions this year are geared to accommodate the entire club. Our Women sides kick off next weekend, after their guernsey presentation this coming Wednesday. It will be good to finally get their season started, particularly after the sadness following the death of prominent Mt Lofty player, Ellen Maple. Good luck to all teams for next weekend s rounds. 2 with SCOTT TIDEMANN Scott is in his second year as senior coach of our men s team. He played his first A grade game for Mt Barker at age 16, under coach Dexter Kennedy. Scott played for several years with his brother Craig, who is still playing and coaching in Sydney. Scott finally finished his career at age 39, after more comebacks than John Farnham. Along the way he was part of 2 A Grade premierships and played in 4 Grand Finals. (This would have been 5 had it not been for a torn ACL in 2000). In his later years as a player, Scott captained our B grade and helped mentor many of the younger players into senior footy. He also played 5 seasons of footy at Sturt in the SANFL, at both U19 and reserves level. He even played 1 year of footy for an A-1 Amateur side in WA! Individual achievements (although Scott speaks and walks the TEAM philosophy) include runner up in our senior B&F twice, and runner up in the B Grade Mail Medal twice in his later playing years. Scott started his coaching journey in 2010, as an assistant to Alby Gluyas, when our senior side was undefeated until losing to nemesis Uraidla in the Grand Final (an experienced described by Scott as one of life s hard lessons) Scott married into Mt Barker Football club royalty, by marrying Alison Murphy. They now have 2 children, Patrick (Mt Barker U14 player), and Maddie (Mt Barker United netball player). Scott studied and trained in geology, geography, and management in Adelaide, and geoscience and IT in Houston, Texas. He is currently CEO of an international software company with offices around the globe. Scott has volunteered around the club and performed almost every task over a period spanning more than 25 years. He was awarded life membership in 2013, for what he describes as hanging around and accumulating enough odd jobs. He is self-described as 41 years young. Grey hairs, some wrinkles from a lifetime of smiles and great experiences His only blemish is that somehow, along the way, he became a Carlton supporter Mt Barker played its first game against Hahndorf at Dunn Park (see previous edition of Roos News) 1881, Mt Barker Football Club was formally founded, and we were not involved in any formal competitions. Instead, we played against teams from around the Hill s & often played teams from the City. Ovals which were used in the early days included Mr. Weld s paddock which was later called Weld Park & later Dunn Park where the local caravan park now is located saw the formation of the Hill s Association of which Mt Barker Football Club became a member. During this time, we won 7 premierships & were runners up 7 times , we joined the Amateur League in the City. This did not work well, due to the extra travel involved. Many players from previous years decided to retire so the Club was considerably weakened , we were part of the Mt Lofty Association, winning premierships in 1933 & saw the Club make another change rejoining the Hill s Association, winning premierships in 1938 {an undefeated season) & 1948 & being runner up on 4 occasions , we transferred to the Hill s Central Association. This period was a golden era for the Club, winning 5 premierships & we were runners up on 3 other occasions. 1967, The Hill s Football League was formed, a combination of Torrens Valley Assoc. & Hills Central Association. Mt Barker was an inaugural member, and we are one of only 3 Clubs to have played in the top division ever since, (the others being Lobethal & Onkaparinga Valley). During the present era we have won 8 senior premierships & been runners up on 9 other occasions. In all we have a total of 24 senior men s premierships since the formation of the Club. Our 25 th senior premiership was won by our inaugural senior women s team in 2016.

3 Results: HFL A Grade: Mt Barker def Echunga Goal Kickers: S. Pfeiffer 3, B. Stokes 2, J. Groutch, S. Callins, T. Scott, T. Worthley Best Players: J. Aitchison, M. Thomas, J. Groutch, S. Pfeiffer, L. Giles A rampant seven goal final quarter from Mt Barker blew its Echunga rivals away in a cold and blustery round one clash at Able Storage Oval. The Roos were able to turn an 8-point three-quarter-time deficit into a 37-point win, doing their best to keep Echunga in the contest, booting 17 behinds in the 71 to 34 victory. Sitting at after three quarters came an inspired decision by Mt Barker coach Scott Tidemann to throw his premier defender and newly announced co-captain Sam Pfeiffer forward. Pfeiffer played out of the goal square and booted three last quarter goals to carry his chargers over the line. Since last meeting in round 14 last season, the two sides have included several new faces to their lists with Mt Barker playing five debutants. New recruits Mark Thomas (Meadows), Harley Montgomery (Torrens Valley), Tom Worthly (River Murray) and local juniors Ryan Weidenhofer and Henry Bruce played their first game while co-captain Ross Brooks returned for the first time since injuring his knee in Echunga s prized recruits Luke Durdin and Xavier Gotch also played their first games after crossing from SANFL club South Adelaide. The tough and scrappy first term set up how the game was going to be played with the Roos kicking 0.4 to the Demons 1.0. Mt Barker finally kicked one through the big sticks thanks to a clever snap from small froward Tyson Scott, but again the wind messed with their heads kicking another four behinds for the quarter and lead by 1 point at the main break. Echunga settled into the second half much better than the Roos, kicking three third-quarter majors to assert themselves on the contest. With the contest heating up a notch, Luke Carey was outstanding for the Demons, gathering plenty of the ball and converting a goal on the back of a melee. It seemed Echunga got in the minds of Mt Barker, going after the former Demon Montgomery in his first outing for his new club. Joel Aish was also sensational for Echunga in the tough third quarter, overcoming the windy and wild conditions to boot two goals, giving the Demons an 8-point three quarter time advantage. The fiery third term was backed up by a classy and mature final term from the Roos who took the game away from Echunga, booting seven unanswered goals. The new look Mt Barker side stood up when the game was on the line with Jamie Groutch, Mark Thomas, Jordan Aitchison and Ethan Bell surging their side forward from the stoppages. After a tough slog all day the Roos simply outlasted the brave Demons who will be extremely competitive this year. In an interesting round two match up Mt Barker face old rivals Uraidla who are coming off an unexpected draw against Lobethal while Echunga play premiers Blackwood.

4 Reserves: Mt Barker def Echunga Goal Kickers: M. Aston 4, J. Lores 2, M. Andruszkiewicz Best Players: J. Lores, M. Andruszkiewicz, S. Leigh, T. Griggs, J. Stokes Round One at home after a solid pre-season greeted us with wild winds but at least the rain kept away for the game. It was fairly wet underfoot from an inch of rain in the last 24 hours. A quality side for this game with quite a number of players with A grade experience blended with home grown youth. The leadership group consisting of Shane Ettridge (captain) and co vice captains in Clint Ray and Matt Johns performed well both personally and in their leadership roles. Mt Barker kicked with wind in the first quarter and set up a handy 25 pt lead at quarter time keeping Echunga scoreless. Mal Aston at full forward provided a great target. 2 goals in the 2 nd quarter kicking into the near gale winds gave Mt Barker a 32 pt lead at the main break. As the game wore on, the defence and mid field began to work well together setting up many great pieces of play leading into the forward lines. The scoring dried up in the 2 nd half as Echunga turned the game into a more scrappy one. Only one second half goal but it was great first game work out and the superior fitness of Mt Barker was clearly evident. Picking best players was difficult however the stand outs were Jack Lores, Michael A-Z, newcomer Stewart Leigh, Thomas Griggs and Jesse Stokes. Clint Ray, Cooper Gluyas and Mal Aston also put in solid performances. It s hard to judge the form of a team on one game but judging by the efforts on Saturday and the selection pressure on players to earn a place in the side is a good sign of things to come. Uraidla at their home ground will be the next big test. U18: Mt Barker def Echunga Goal Kickers: T. Applebee 2, B. Kneebone, M. Chapman, K. Lucas, W. Bruce, B. Little Best Players: W. Bruce, J. Woodhouse, B. Little, M. Chapman, M. Glover A great start to the Season by our Under 18 s on Saturday. In what was always going to be a tough match for our boys they withstood a determined Echunga outfit in the first half.our boys played disciplined football and worked their way into a commanding position. In conditions that were very ordinary they came out after half time and kicked three goals into the gale force wind to set themselves up to run out easy winners in the end. A great effort by the boys. U16: Mt Barker def Echunga Goal Kickers: J. Aish 3, E. Baxter 2, R. Schumacher 2, B. Tischer, S. Weidenhofer, J. Graham Best Players: M. Ryan-Borbasi, H. Lane, J. Aish, J. Lynn, M. Richards, S. Hartland The conditions that greeted us today for round 1 were probably not what was expected in round 1 but the conditions did improve as the game progressed. With our opposition having the scoring end for the first quarter the team after a sluggish start and allowing our opposition a couple of scoring shots we were able to run and carry the ball into the breeze and score the other end and were only a point down at quarter time. The second quarter was our best scoring quarter kicking 5 goals 3 with the breeze and holding Echunga scoreless for the quarter. Even though we did not score as heavily in the third quarter we did outscore our opposition against what was still a significant breeze which was vital for the end result.the last quarter we had 8 scoring shots to 1 but with a combination of inaccuracy and poor decision making we were only able to convert a quarter of our scoring shots into goals. Overall it was solid contribution from all players that was the most satisfying but still plenty of room for improvement. U14 Div 1: Mt Barker def Echunga Goal Kickers: G. Pope 2, P. Tideman, F. Samardzic, M. May, I. Doyle Best Players: M. Linke, P. Tideman, A. Martin, C. Ryan-Borbasi, G. Pope Wet, wild & blustery conditions saw Mt Barker Mini Colts take on Echunga at home on Saturday. From the first toss up to the final siren both teams fought valiantly in atrocious weather, gale like winds with almost horizontal rain. Mt Barkers ball handling skills came to the forefront with great tackling & straight kicking for goals & defence was unstoppable in slippery conditions.a great effort by all the boys considering they have not trained in the wet as yet.

5 U14 Div 2: Birdwood def. by Mt Barker Goal Kickers: S. Mahomet 3, O. Chapman, J. Jolly Best Players: J. Feirclough, E. Hopley, G. Hopley, E. Herter, J. Jolly U12: Lobethal def. by Mt Barker Goal Kickers: K. Donaldson, D. Bell, L. Davies Best Players: S. Scamps, K. Donaldson Cold wet and windy conditions met the under 12 s at Lobethal on Friday night, a far cry from last week. Under tough conditions our kids managed to kick straight v s Lobethal which in the end made all the difference. After a tightly fought three quarters Mt Barker held a 3 point lead heading into the last quarter and were kicking into a strong wind to come home. Our guys worked very hard defending and manage to scrape home with a well-deserved 1 point victory. Social Media Profile handles of some of our current media streams are listed below.
