Block nd November 2013 Volume 1 Issue 1 Match reports are written by the students. Message from the Director of Sport It has been a great start to the year at Dulwich College Beijing, and success on the sporting field has been consistent during the first block of sport. There have been many fixtures and tournament victories, and so far I have had the pleasure of seeing a great deal of high quality sport. As we move into the next block I thought it would be useful to have this newsletter to show previous results and reports, and to give details about the sports fixtures for this block. I hope that you enjoy reading this edition of the newsletter as it gives a glimpse of the great achievements we have had in sport at the school so far this year. Every player was very excited and nervous before the games. During the game, everybody played their best and were light on their feet. In the Dome, you hear the swishing sound when the racket smashed through the air, and the enthusiastic cheers when our team won. Although we didn't win overall, everybody enjoyed the process. Also, the game prepared us for our games in the future. This includes the ISAC badminton tournament coming up in a month's time. We learned the key to winning games is confidence and perseverance. On a chilly morning, over 50 of our students showed up with mass enthusiasm, anticipating a chance to show off their talents. After a warm welcome from the WAB coach, the battle finally began. With hard strokes of rackets; shuttlecocks flew high across the tall gym ceiling. Singles games took part in the afternoon after lunch. All the players were absolutely proficient, they not only knew their tactics by heart but were also observing their opponents closely and attacking their weaknesses. 3 FOOTBALL U14 Girls Football v BCIS Tuesday 3rd September Match Result: Win DCB 7 BCIS 1 Match Report: From the start we dominated the game, with a 30 second goal from Yoko Yamashita. We played with determination and good passing scoring another goal a few minutes later, but we made one mistake and the score at half time was 2 to 1. We wanted to make the school proud so we started attacking more and put pressure on the other team, quickly putting two more goals on by half time. In the second half we played swiftly with many great passes from Sue and Aisha. We were all tired but persevered and by the end of the game had won. Special mentions to Yoko and Sophie for scoring two goals. Many thanks to the coaches Mr. Tucker, Mr. Mower, Monica Wu and Sarah. Akhina Gaches U14 Boys Football v BCIS Tuesday 3rd September Match Result: Win DCB 7 BCIS 2 Match Report: In an intense first half we had many shots directed at the goal and they were just an inch away from scoring. Our team decided to apply more pressure in the second half and we swiftly put five more goals into the back of their net. A mention must go to William and Nathan, who each scored a hat trick! I think that for the first game of the season, this was a spectacular start and boosted the team s morale. We need to work more on positioning, stamina and technique, and if we do, I think that our team has a great chance of winning the ISAC tournament. Richard Li U13 Girls Football v ISB Tuesday 10th September Match Result: Draw DCB 3 ISB 3 Match Report: Today's game was intense. We all knew that ISB was going to be the hardest team, but we still kept our heads up and went for it. The game started and, in the first five minutes, the strongest player of their team scored a goal. That didn't stop us from playing; it was just one goal to get. After a few minutes, the same player scored another goal, which was tough for us. At half time Mr. Hawkins talked to us about how we didn't have enough defenders when the ball was on our side. So after half, time in the first few minutes, Elsie scored a goal easily, and right after that we scored another goal, which made it a tie. Unfortunately ISB scored another goal, and finally in the last few minutes Gloria, our amazing striker, scored and made it a draw. Nicole Sun U14 Girls Football v ISB Tuesday 10th September Match Result: Draw DCB 2 ISB 2 Match Report: We played a very fair and exciting match against ISB. After the kick off, we dominated the game, scoring a goal within a minute with a great pass from Akhina. We played very hard; especially Aisha and Alice running back and forth up the field. But after a while, we made a mistake and the score became 1-1. In the second half, we played with immense pressure against ISB. The team was still ardent, again taking many solid shots. We were all tired and by the end of the game the score was 2-2. Special mentions to Sue for saving shots in goal for her very first time as a goalkeeper. Yoko Yamashita U12 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 10th September Match Result: Draw DCB 3 ISB 3

U13 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 10th September Match Result: Win DCB 6 ISB 2 Match Report: Our U13 team was in a good shape for the start of our match against ISB. We started off well, maintaining possession and doing what we have practiced in the training sessions. As we played, opportunities came. Alex, Phillip, Michael, and Christian managed to score several times and this boosted our confidence. Although we scored six goals, we let in two unlucky goals. It was a huge team effort and we successfully won the match. Everyone played his role, and it was a good start of the season. Phillip Yoon U14 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 10th September Match Result: Loss DCB 1 ISB 8 U12 Girls Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Win DCB 3 WAB 2 Match Report: Our first match versus WAB was really good. In the first few minutes, Marjorie scored our first goal; she dribbled around defenders and scored a very accurate goal. Our passes weren't as accurate in this game as we wanted them to be, and we missed some chances. We also were a little distracted, and at the end of first half WAB scored a goal. In the second half we were much better at accurate passing. Unfortunately WAB were also playing well and they scored a nice goal. We were under pressure but we didn't give up. Our teamwork helped us to score two more goals and we won the match. Anna Vickova U13 Girls Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Draw DCB 0 WAB 0 Match Report: Todays match was a fun match. We worked as a team but the biggest problem was that we could not score goals. We had ten chances to score but struggled to find the back of the net. This is something we need to improve on in future games as sometimes players dribbled really quickly past all the defenders but they would then lose control of the ball. When they turned, the defenders from the other team would easily get the ball. I think we did pretty well but it would have been best if we could have scored some goals and proved to WAB that we are a very strong team. Nicole Sun U14 Girls Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Win DCB 5 WAB 0 U12 Boys Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Win DCB 4 WAB 0 Match Report: This was the best game we have had so far this year! We had great goalies, defenders, midfielders and strikers. In our previous fabulous game we played well with some nice passes, gaols and saves. In our second game we won 4-0. Jeremy scored one goal, Diego scored one goal and Kaj scored two gaols. All in all it was a great game against WAB. Kaj Scholer U13 Boys Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Loss DCB 0 WAB 4 U14 Boys Football v WAB Thursday 12th September Match Result: Win DCB 6 WAB 3 Match Report: The game began and we started off shakily. WAB scored the first goal with a shot to the bottom corner. We carried on with our heads held high and we were rewarded with a goal from Nathan. With a brilliant run down the wing Jack Kang slotted a goal in the bottom corner. After a quick team talk about

communicating better we were back on for the second half. We played much better and applied much more pressure. Players such as Cassius, Leo and Andreas did an excellent job of playing against the massive WAB players! With a good pass and a quick dribble, Nathan was away again and managed to get his hat trick. As the match was beginning to end we relaxed a bit and WAB scored another goal. When the final whistle blew, Dulwich had won the match 6-3. A massive thanks to Mr Hermans for coaching us to another spectacular win! We drew two games and won the other four so we were the exchange champions. The last game was extremely tight and I think throughout the entire tournament, everyone did their best and tried very hard. I think everyone was fantastic and there was a lot of support. As the games were played, we learned from what we did wrong. For example, the lack of accurate passes or the loss of control over the ball. We overcame a lot of things and started passing and planning our attacks. In the future we should panic less and have people assist the attacker so that there is a bigger chance of scoring. They applied more pressure and scored another. Just before the half was beginning to close Jack Kang managed to score DCB s first goal. At half time the score was 2-1 to BSB A. After a motivating team talk. Jordon, Will and Joe all scored to put us in the lead. Just before the match ended BSB slotted one more goal in to make the score 5-3. In the next game against BSB B, we won 7-0, with Nathan scoring 3, Jordan scoring 3 and Will scoring 1. Overall we played pretty well although our defense and our attack were playing more like two teams rather than one. We needed more unity between the attack and defense. But on a whole we played quite well,

especially in the goal scoring part of the game where we were really good with our finishing. BCIS was quite tiring, physically, and mentally as we had played a whole day of matches. We started off well, and Eddie scored an amazing bottom corner goal. After halftime our top players came on and Nathan scored a hat trick and one of Jordon's shots found the back of the net. Then all of a sudden, BCIS sent on their wonder kid and he inspired his team, scoring goal after goal but the final whistle blew with DCB leading the game. Will Herbert, Nathan Turner and Jonas Ng U12 Girls Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Loss DCB 0 HISB 1 Match Report: Our match was not as good as our previous match versus WAB. In the first half of the match we were crowding around the ball, we did not stay in our positions, and we did not pass the ball to each other. The score after the fist half was 0-0, even though we had some chances to score a goal. The second half was a little bit better. We stayed in our positions and we had more chances. Unfortunately at the end of this half they scored a goal. We did not give up though and tried to do our best. Anna Vlckova U13 Girls Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Win DCB 5 HISB 1 U14 Girls Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Win DCB 5 HISB 0 Match Report: Today our football match was very intense and Harrow had some great strikers but we managed to block them out. The final score was 5-0 to us and Aisha scored a hat trick, Yoko scored one goal and Sophie also scored, Bianca was our goalie and had a clean sheet for the game which was very impressive considering the quality of the finishing. I think we have found our goalie for the rest of the season! Sherry Liu U12 Boys Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Win DCB 4 HISB 3 U13 Boys Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Win DCB 13 HISB 0 U14 Boys Football v Harrow Tuesday 17th September Match Result: Loss DCB 2 HISB 4 Match Report: We scored two goals swiftly in the first half, but then we let our guard down. Harrow had two scoring opportunities, and they scored both of them. At half time the score was 2-2. We had many, many opportunities in the second half, but we didn't score! Then Harrow put two more goals at the back of our net. Overall, we fought well but we still have many things to work on. One very important thing is communication! I am hoping to revenge for todays loss by thrashing Harrow in the return game later in the season. Richard Li U14 Boys Football v BWYA Tuesday 8th October Match Result: Win DCB 12 BYWA 2 Match Report: DCB opened the scoring with a good goal from Nathan. We applied lots of pressure and we scored another three goals before the half time whistle blew. At half time the score was 4-0 to DCB. After half time we felt very confident and players such as Jack, Aaron, Jordon and Robert put a number of goals past the goalkeeper. However BWYA managed to score two goals before the final whistle blew. The match finished 12-2 to DCB. Thank you to Mr Hermans for another fantastic win for our side. William Herbert U14 Girls Football v BWYA Tuesday 8th October Match Result: Win DCB 4 BYWA 0 Match Report: Today we had a great and fantastic game. Everyone got a great kick out of it. In the first half of the game, Akhina did a really good job. She did not only play her part, but also she helped the defenders. Aisha scored two goals in the first half. She was really good at shooting. Also in the first half, Sophie scored the third goal. In the second half Yoko shot a very lucky goal. The goalie on the other team touched the ball, which ended rolling into the goal. Thank you guys for playing an amazing game. Flora Zhao

U12 Girls Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Win DCB 2 ISB 0 Match Report: yesterday we played against ISB. We made a lot of good passes and we stayed in our position. In the first half nobody scored a goal, even though we had some chances. During the second half, Natalie scored a goal from a free kick. After that goal we stayed calm and concentrated, and I managed to score a goal. It was actually an own goal, because I shot it across the goal and the defender kicked in. I think the best players were: Natalie, Erica, Ella and of course Sam, the goalie. It was a nice match and I hope we will beat them again at the ISAC tournament Anna Vlckova U13 Girls Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Loss DCB 1 ISB 2 U14 Girls Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Loss DCB 3 ISB 2 Match Report: Today's game was very fair and DCB played with great enthusiasm against ISB. When the match started, we were a bit panicked because we were too psychologically influenced by our rivals. We made a few mistakes, and ISB scored 2 in the first half, however, we had many chances to score and they were all quite close. In the second half, we played better, getting more passes around and our positioning became better than in the first half. Heather made a great pass and eventually we scored with an unusual shot from the back line, which bounced off the goalie's leg into the goal. After that, another ball was shot into the back of the net when Alice made a strong kick from her goal. Thanks to Heather and Sue Vern for their great enthusiasm and participation in the game. We hope to get as much practice as we can for ISAC, and let's continue to keep our confidence in the remaining matches we have. Yoko Yamashita U12 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Win DCB 2 ISB 1 Match Report: On Tuesday the under 12 s team played against ISB. We won 2-1. In the first half we were 2-0 up when Luke scored the first goal and the second goal was assisted by myself and shot in by Leon. In the second half ISB played well, took the advantage, and scored. However throughout the game our defense was too strong and they did not score again. Towards the end of the game we nearly scored a third goal. The match was a great game. Kaj Scholer U13 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Win DCB 5 ISB 3 U14 Boys Football v ISB Tuesday 15th October Match Result: Win DCB 8 ISB 3 Match Report: Leonardo started with a shot from the left flank, and we quickly picked up the pace and scored some goals. In the second half, we continued to play well and scored more goals. I think it was a thrilling match as many players acquired their first goal today. I would also especially like to mention Cassius as although he did not score, he still provided assists and played extremely well as a right back. I thought this was one of the best games we have played so far this season. We dominated the game throughout, and we established a good sense of co-operation in both the attacking and defending areas. Richard Li

U12 Girls Football v DSP Tuesday 22nd October Match Result: Loss DCB 0 DSP 3 Match Report: yesterday we played versus DSP and we lost 3-0. They scored a goal in the first five minutes of the half. We played really well but they were stronger. They had really strong girls with strong kicks but we had some good chances as well. Our passes were accurate and we didn t crowd. The last two goals were really unlucky. The first goal was going to miss the frame, but it jumped from a bump into the goal. The other goal was unlucky, and happened as we were tired and it rained. The best three players were: Erica, Ella and Krystal. I think we did a great job and I hope we will beat them at the ISAC tournament on the weekend. Anna Vlckova U14 Girls Football v DSP Tuesday 22nd October Match Result: Loss DCB 0 DSP 3 Match Report: The game against DSP was very exciting, although we lost the match 3-0 but it didn't stop us from trying and believing we will improve and beat them in our next game. In the beginning everyone was into the game but we underestimated them a bit, causing them to score their first goal. After realizing their strength, we started to defend much more than we had been. We passed a great deal and made long kicks and good passes. We will be even better if we learn to put more pressure on the attackers and do not commit immediately. Everyone did a good job and we still managed to defend well in the second half where towards the end they didn't score. The match ended in a two to one win for our team. It was a good game at the beginning of the match and we played well until the half time break. When we started the second half we slowed down a little bit. There were two goal scorers and Luke & Onni scored a goal each. Our first match was versus DSP and we won 1-0. They had really strong girls, but we had faster players. Our second match was versus WAB and we won 1-0 as well. It was a lot harder than versus DSP. They had a good goalie and good defenders but so did we. Our next match was versus BSB and we also won 1-0. It was a very hard match. Nobody scored a goal during the first two halves so we had to play ten minutes extra, but only six players on each team. Also, after two minutes one player from both teams would go out. We had loads of chances to score, but the real goal came when only Ella and Sam and I were on the pitch. I think this match was one of the most important matches we played because it made us get into the final. In the final we played Harrow and we lost 1-0. We were really tired and it was an unfortunate goal. Overall it was the best football we have played. We passed the ball accurately, we called, we ran into space and we helped each other. It was a great finish, coming 2nd and winning the Sportsmanship trophy. Anna Vlckova U13 Girls ISAC Football Tournament Saturday 26th October at ISB Champions: ISB Runners-Up: DCB 3rd Place: WAB Sportsmanship: WAB Tournament Report: We played an excellent ISAC tournament on Saturday but unfortunately we scored an own goal, which meant we came Runners-Up. The score in the final was 1-0 to ISB. The final was a tough and dramatic game. The strongest ISB player fainted and fractured her rib bones. We had many opportunities to shoot but we were under pressure and the ISB team used many tactics to defend our striker. It was an unlucky game but our team is amazing and we are lucky to have such skilled and talented players. It has been a great season playing with year 8 girls and I look forward to the U13 FOBISIA girl s football tournament, coached again by Mr. Hawkins. Nicole Sun

U14 Girls ISAC Football Tournament Saturday 26th October at BCIS Champions: DSP Runners-Up: DCB 3rd Place: ISB Sportsmanship: BCIS U12 Boys ISAC Football Tournament Saturday 26th October at YCIS Champions: DSP Runners-Up: HISB 3rd Place: BSB Sportsmanship: DCB and YCIS Tournament Report: We played some great football in the ISAC Tournament. In our first match we did great and won 1-0. In our second and third match we lost by one or two goals, but we did play well in those two games. Then, in our last match, we took all our strength and won 3-0. At the end of the ISAC tournament there were many teams equal on points and the coaches did something really weird and counted the amount of goals we scored and conceded, and worked out the goals. In total we scored four goals for the tournament. Kaj, Alex, Jun, Ku and Charlie scored one goal each during our games. Overall we came in 5th place in the tournament. Kaj Scholar U13 Boys ISAC Football Tournament Saturday 26th October at WAB Champions: WAB Runners-Up: DCB 3rd Place: ISB Sportsmanship: TIS Tournament Report: A quick warm up by Biniyam prepared the team for our first match. Dulwich was full of energy, and a strong midfield of Phillip, Christian and Alex won the ball in the midfield and Dulwich went to a 1-0 early lead. The goals then started rolling in and by the end of the match the final score was 5-1. Our second match was against THIS and we scored numerous goals. But despite the score line, we didn't play well as a team, and our goals were more individual. The next game was against IST. Beautiful possession play led to goal after goal throughout the entire match. In the semi-finals we played Harrow. They were big but we played through it and finished with a 3-0 win. In the final Felix Mueller opened the scoring. But WAB fought back and equalized. We couldn't play our regular football, and started consistently giving away turnovers. They scored a late goal the final score was 3-1 WAB. It was an unlucky day for Dulwich. We are not going to let this loss get to our heads, and instead turn it into a motivation to train harder. We look forward to the U14 ISAC Football next year. Jacob Zimmerman U14 Boys ISAC Football Tournament Saturday 26th October at Dulwich Champions: DCB Runners-Up: BWYA 3rd Place: DSP Sportsmanship: BCIS Tournament Report: Our team played excellently. Most of the time, we controlled the field like maestros and both the attackers and defenders were reliable. As captain, I was delighted that our team was able to face defeat from BWYA and confront ISB optimistically, which was one of the best games we played. Indeed, it took some time before some of our players switched on and awoke, but from that first whistle, we only had victory in mind. I believe that our loss against BWYA was a learning experience and showed us to play our games cautiously, and to a certain extent, to play without arrogance. I believe that we have finally met our goals this season: To play fluently as a team, to pass precisely, play as a whole, to collaborate on and off the field, and finally, to win the ISAC tournament. At any one time, there were three singles matches being played, and two doubles matches being played, with each player playing at least two matches, and with each player performing at an exceptionally high standard. Each Dulwich team member gave a tremendous amount of effort, enthusiasm and energy - despite the fact that we had all just competed in Sports Day! Initially, the Dulwich Girls were still trying to recover from Sports Day. However once the matches began, the Dulwich Girls were hard to stop. With wins in all of the doubles matches and wins in most of the singles matches it is safe to say that it was a successful afternoon against worthy competitors. Isobel Brown U19 Boys Tennis v ISB Monday 16th September Doubles and singles On Monday the 17th of September the Dulwich U19 team took 5 players to compete in a friendly competition against members of the ISB U19 at ISB. Upon arrival each Dulwich player was sent to a court in which we played a set to 6 with an ISB player. As soon as the match was finished, another would be stared. We all managed to play at least 2 sets against an ISB player. Despite being tired and sore from an intense sports day, we all put in the effort to play at the best level we could and have a great time. While we played fairly and with great skill, the tournament began with a few disappointing defeats. However, we refused to let our heads drop, and by the end of the second day we had regained our confidence, winning 2-0 against both UISG and IST. By Saturday, we were prepared to challenge the undefeated SCIS dragons. With adrenaline pumping through our veins and sheer determination, we embarked upon the greatest comeback of the season; bumping, setting and spiking our way into the finals. Following a nerve-racking final game, we were unable to beat QSI but gladly took the second place trophy back home. A special mention to Ella and Yiumin, who were unable to come but still cheered for us back in Beijing. Lastly, the girls would like to give a big thank you to Coach Tomaszun for her dedication to the team, and without whom we would have never been able to play as well as we did! Googie Reid, Captain of Girls Volleyball

We were all very pumped and excited playing our first game. Although we lost that game we felt confident going into the second day as we really only lost because of bad luck. We won three games that day including a big game against SCIS and we finished as 3rd seed for the semi-finals. It was another tough battle, played up to all three sets and we were just an inch away of winning the game but luck was not on our side again. Finally, the team would like to thank Mr Townsend and Alexander Koh the assistant coach, for all their hard work.
