I hate to admit it but my father was right, time definitely goes by faster as I continue to get older! As you know the first 10 days of January the clubhouse at 1600 Edgewood drive was closed down for yearly upkeep and maintenance. This year s shutdown was quite successful with many areas of the club getting a much needed deep cleaning while other areas received a fresh coat of paint, all in addition to many repairs being completed throughout. I hope you have noticed the difference. January also brought with it a new employee in our racquets & fitness department, Mr. Keith Pritchard, who many of you have already met. Keith s official title is Director of Racquet Sports and he is already making a huge impact with member participation in squash specifically, but also in the arena of fitness. Please read through this newsletter for an outline of the new programs he and Michael are working on for the coming month and make plans to participate in as many as you can! As we move into February I would like to have each member take note of an operational change that is slated to take affect next month. In an attempt to cut cost without sacrificing services, beginning March 1st, 2017 Edgewood Country Club will no longer be mailing each member a printed copy of the monthly newsletter via the US Postal Service. The newsletters, however will be ed to member based on the address in your online account. Please know, Members will still have access to the newsletter on our website and we will continue to print copies and place them throughout the clubhouse as normal (in Main Foyer, in the locker rooms, and in Randy s Grill hallway on lower level). Although this change is intended to be uniform across the membership, Members who feel strongly about having a printed copy mailed to them may contact Martha in the Main Office ( ext. 103). She will make arrangements to mail one to you each month but ONLY UPON SPECIFIC REQUEST. This single operational change is projected to save Edgewood members approximately $5, annually once we account for the costs of paper, printing, and postage! We respectfully ask for your support of our efforts to keep costs as low as possible with this change. In closing this month, I would like to remind everyone Chef Dennis, Brandie and the entire Food and Beverage Team has planned two wonderful Valentines Dinner options for you to chose from this year For those who prefer a more structured event we have a six course meal. Wines are paired with each course in the Ballroom but is limited to the first 50 members who call For those who want to enjoy a meal off the menu in the Grill and Edgewood Rooms, we will be offering a limited menu with options as well as a set 4-course meal to chose from Please remember, the continued success of your Club is dependent upon your support. 2 F r o m t h e E C C C h e f As we all have new goals, and desires to be more physically fit as part of the New Year s resolutions. I decide to help promote that this month. Eating lighter doesn t have to mean, depriving yourself. Here s a great recipe for an entre e-salad combination that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you content. The slightly hot and sweet flavors of the soy and wasabi vinaigrette drizzled over a grilled swordfish with baby salad greens and roasted potatoes make a wonderful lunch or dinner entre e. Procedure: Whisk together the ingredients for the dressing and chill. Grill the Swordfish steaks as needed and place warm over the salad greens. 4 FROM THE RACQUETS DIRECTOR In my first couple of weeks it has been great to meet more of the membership and begin to get a feel for the types of programming I can bring to the Club. I have come up with a slate of Squash Program options that I hope will best serve the membership interest at large. My goal is to engage the Junior membership ages 5-15, the Women s membership in league and social match play, and of course continue to draw in more new players to join the active Men s Squash Community. For most, Squash is unfamiliar sporting territory. I do strongly urge those who have thought about trying Squash, or those who are curious, to get involved. Having the only doubles & two singles courts is an incredible asset to the ECC, and something truly unique in Charleston. Forbes magazine ranked Singles softball Squash the number 1 healthiest sport in a 2003 independent study. Doubles is less physically demanding, however the team aspect provides an entirely different set of challenges. The workout, camaraderie and fun had on (and off) both Squash courts make it worth checking out. Squash is by no means a simple sport to pick up. In my decade plus of coaching, I have found those that have a good initial exposure from an experienced player or coach quickly fall in love with the sport. Because Squash is rarely seen on TV, nor is the premise of the game entirely intuitive, a group clinic or handful of lessons does go a long way. Once you have the basics down, it is one of the simplest sports to organize and make a part of your weekly routine. I welcome feedback on the Squash Program options I have laid out so far, and hope that in the coming months I am able to manage the logistics of days, times and program offerings to maximize the Squash Court usage prior to the opening of our Golf course and Tennis courts. Browne Cup II Victorious at last. The ECC recently played host to the historic Browne Cup II Invitational Squash Tournament with the Pendennis Club. Ten players from Louisville made the trip to Charleston for a great weekend of singles and doubles Squash. This event will rotate to Louisville next year, and the ECC is going to work diligently to retain the trophy that is now proudly in our possession for the first time since the 80 s!!! I would like to extend a special thanks to Doug & Shawna Meeks for their crucial role hosting a fantastic event for us on the Friday evening at their home. It is not always easy to open your house to a group of rowdy Squash players, but fortunately for the Meeks much of the reckless behavior was exhibited out on the town post party. I am sure more than a few Uber drivers were left scratching their heads wondering what on earth Squash is This was my first event at Edgewood and I would further like to compliment and thank all of the staff that provided service throughout the tournament weekend. In my experience attending events like this across the country and around the world, this was top notch. I was left with nothing but compliments from our guests from Louisville, who will no doubt be excited to come back again in two years time. I am delighted to have come on board with a Staff and Club Membership that takes such pride in showcasing the best our Club, and city, has to offer. Thanks to all of our passionate Edgewood Squash members for making this possible. I look forward to cultivating many new relationships within the national Squash community alongside you all, and establishing more traditions that will add to the Club s rich heritage and reputation in the years to come! 6 JUNIOR SQUASH PROGRAMS Saturday Active Start Junior Clinic 8:30-9:15am $60 for the Session or $30 for Start your weekend off by getting yourself to the gym while your child can enjoy a mixture of Squash based games, balance and coordination challenges and fun with their friends. Ages 5-8 Sunday Junior SquashFit Bootcamp 1:00-2:00pm Feb 5, 12, 19, 26 $60 This will be a fitness session set up similar to the adult bootcamps, but aimed at challenging our Club's junior athletes. This will benefit any serious young athlete, regardless of sporting background. Learning proper training principles, and the positive impact it will have on their performance is empowering and solidifies their work ethic. Ages Saturday Fundamentals Junior Clinic 9:15-10:15am Wednesday Fundamentals Junior Clinic 4:30-5:30pm Feb 1, 8, 15, 22 Bring your child out to learn the key elements of Squash and build fundamental athletic skills that will improve coordination, movement and a passion for being active. Ages 9-12 Monday Junior Match Play Clinic 4:30-6:00pm Feb 6, 13, 20, 27 $120 for the session This clinic is for children interested in playing others of a similar age and enjoying some spirited competition on the Squash courts. Focus will be on strategy, rules and sportsmanship. Ages 8-12 FROM THE FITNESS PRO 3 Tips to keep you focused on your fitness goals for the New Year Be specific with the goals you set for yourself. Fitness is a lifestyle and your exercise program is a constantly evolving process. To obtain and maintain your fitness goals (and to eventually surpass those goals and create new goals) requires hard work and discipline, of course, but it also requires a lot of patience. A big reason why people fall off the fitness wagon is that they don't see the results they seek fast enough. The best way around this is to have an idea of your long-term goals but to also set really specific, realistic short-term goals for yourself every week. You want to set short-term goals that are challenging but attainable. That way, rather than being frustrated that you don't have an 8-pack after your first week, you can see your fitness journey as a series of progressive victories. For example, if right now, you can hold a plank for fifteen seconds, a solid goal for next week would be to increase that to twenty seconds. Before long, you'll be planking for a minute. When you set your benchmarks too far apart, you not only deprive yourself of celebrating your achievements, you also make it more difficult to track your momentum. Hire a trainer. Working out with a knowledgeable personal trainer, is money well spent. Working out under the supervision of an expert will allow you to safely maximize your time in the gym to attain your goals faster, which will make it easier to keep your resolution. If that isn't a possibility, perhaps you have a friend or acquaintance that knows what they are doing and would be willing to partner with you to keep you motivated
