2 To follow the new FITE ruling that body protectors must be worn by all PTV competitors FITE is World Governing Body for TREC - International AND National competitions Responsibility is with the NETO (National Governing Body) to enforce FITE Rules Effective from 1 February 2013

3 As the BHS, we must ensure and promote the correct safety standards for the relevant equestrian activity To remain in line with industry expert advice regarding protection for riders negotiating fixed obstacles To be pro-active rather than re-active to advances in rider safety Insurance implications France, Germany, Austria already wear body protectors

4 Old BHS TREC Rules Riders may chose to wear a body protector during any phase of the competition. If worn, a BETA Level 3 (purple label) which has been manufactured in the year 2000 or after, is strongly recommended. If a rider is wearing a body protector for the PTV phase the following allowances will be added to the height of the low branch obstacle for that competitor: BHS TREC Level 1 = 2 inches BHS TREC Level 2 = 2 inches BHS TREC Level 3 = 1 inch BHS TREC Level 4 = No allowance

5 New BHS TREC Rules effective 1 April 2013 A body protector is compulsory for : the PTV phase for all TREC competitions all Winter Series (Kelly Marks) competitions when fixed obstacles form part of the course. when the POR phase includes judged PTV obstacles which includes jumping or negotiating a fixed obstacle Organisers are responsible for ensuring that competitors are informed if the POR is to include PTV obstacles which require jumping or negotiating a fixed obstacle. A fixed obstacle includes cross country fences, steps, ditches etc.

6 WHY THESE PHASES ONLY?? POR A higher chance of incident, but the consequences of one are generally less severe PTV Have a lower chance of incident, but the consequences of one are generally more severe Shorter, more intense, faster speed

7 Permitted Body Protectors A BETA Level 3 (purple label) which has been manufactured in the year 2000 or after must be worn.

8 If a rider chooses to wear an airbag style body protector it must be worn over a permitted body protector and if activated, must be deflated or removed before continuing. Only activated if rider is separated from horse during fall. Hybrid Air-jackets are permitted. Level 3 body protector with built-in air jacket on the outside Riders wearing Exo Body Cage protectors must inform the secretary at all events. Needs an allen key to remove Secretary to inform paramedics and start

At all affiliated TREC events for the PTV phase At any affiliated Kelly Marks event which has fixed obstacles For the POR phase where ridden fixed obstacles are judged obstacles Should be checked at declarations and again by tack steward in the warm up Use BHS guideline laminate for reference

10 Things to watch out for Purple labels sometimes hidden inside or under straps No purple label but BETA 2000 or similar wording printed on the white label = not acceptable Occurs with seconds, discounted stock, fakes Non-Compliance Not allowed to compete Ways to enforce? New Low Branches Rules: BHS TREC Level 1 = 2 inches BHS TREC Level 2 = 2 inches BHS TREC Level 3 = No allowance BHS TREC Level 4 = No allowance To allow for progression at the lower levels, NOT due to wearing a body protector
