1 1 STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club ROYAL RANDWICK RACECOURSE Saturday 4 October 2014 Weather: Fine Track: Good (3) Rail: True Penetrometer: 4.89 STEWARDS: R P Murrihy (Chairman), M F Van Gestel, G T Rudolph, D L Carr and cadet J A Shultz RACE 1: Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (Listed) 1000m At the request of trainer Mrs G Waterhouse, Speak Fondly was inspected by Racing NSW veterinarian Dr C Suann on Friday afternoon, 3 October 2014 when the filly had some sensitivity in the near-fore hoof after being replated on Thursday, 2 October Speak Fondly was passed fit to start. Bar Stories bounded in the air on jumping and lost ground (2L). Speak Fondly jumped awkwardly. Shortly after the start Speak Fondly, which was inclined to race greenly, shifted out away from Prevail, which was inclined to lay out. Speak Fondly continued to race greenly and laid out making the home turn. On straightening Flaunting, which had been held up on the back of Rosie Quadrille, shifted out to improve to the outside of that runner and, in doing so, made contact with Themis, resulting in both Themis and Flaunting becoming unbalanced. Prevail was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight and near the 200m had to be directed away from the heels of Speak Fondly. Close to the finish line Speak Fondly was hampered when crowded between Calaverite and Igraine, which shifted out slightly. A post-race veterinary examination of Rosie Quadrille revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. A post-race veterinary examination of Themis revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg. Stable representative Ms M Norton advised Themis and Rosie Quadrille would now be spelled. RACE 2: NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (Listed) 1000m After being loaded into the barrier, Rhode Assassin got its off foreleg up momentarily on the barrier partition. Rhode Assassin was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Last Witness was slow to begin. More Than Fabulous raced greenly and ran out near the 900m. Passing the 300m Wolf Cry was awkwardly placed on the heels of Last Witness, which shifted out. At the same point More Than Fabulous shifted out and bumped Brazen. G Schofield, rider of 5 th placegetter Stimac, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out approaching the end of the race. RACE 3: TAB Betting Season Dulcify Quality (Listed) 1600m Following an inspection by Racing NSW Stewards this morning, Deadset was found to have sustained a laceration to the right eye. Deadset was inspected by Club's Veterinary Officer after arrival on course and passed fit to start. When interviewed trainer Mr P Webster advised that it was an old wound sustained by Deadset after Warwick Farm races on Wednesday, 10 September Scratch Me Lucky was slow to begin. When questioned concerning why mid race he gave up his position one out, which then resulted in his mount being pocketed behind Duccio inside Deadset until near the 200m, J Moreira stated that when Deadset

2 2 improved to his outside at the 700m he received some pressure, which caused his mount, Hampton Court, to shift to the rail. J Moreira was also spoken to by the Stewards regarding his riding in the early part of the straight, whereby he positioned himself too close to the heels of Duccio, resulting in Hampton Court striking the heels of Duccio when badly held up inside Deadset. J Moeira was told to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination of Duccio revealed the gelding to have lost the near-hind plate and had abrasions to both hind bumpers. J Moreira pleaded guilty to charges under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used the whip in successive strikes and used the whip on 10 occasions in a forehand manner (5 more than permitted) prior to the 100m. J Moreira was fined the sum of $500. When questioned, B Shinn, rider of Scratch Me Lucky, stated his mount, which was racing in blinkers for the first time, pulled hard in the early and middle stages and it was not until Deadset improved around him that Scratch Me Lucky settled. B Shinn added that, as a result, Scratch Me Lucky failed to run out the 1600m journey. A post-race veterinary examination of Scratch Me Lucky revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. B Shinn reported to stable representative Mr S Perry that Scratch Me Lucky was making a respiratory noise and Mr Perry undertook to advise the Stewards of the results of an endoscopic examination. Mr Perry indicated Scratch Me Lucky will now be spelled. RACE 4: Sydney City Toyota Roman Consul Stakes (Group 2) 1200m Co-trainer Mr J Cummings reported this morning that Hallowed Crown had a slight cough. An endoscopic examination of Hallowed Crown was clear. Hallowed Crown was inspected by Racing NSW veterinarian Dr C Suann after its arrival on course and passed Hallowed Crown fit to start. Time For War overraced in the early and middle stages. Delectation overraced in the middle stages, resulting in its rider, B Shinn, allowing that gelding to stride forward and circle the field rounding the home turn. When questioned concerning the performance of Hallowed Crown, H Bowman stated that he was not disappointed with the colt s effort and that, whilst he had not been held up when racing inside runners in the straight, he had to angle out near the 150m to continue into clear ground, whereby Hallowed Crown finished the race off solidly. A post-race veterinary examination of Hallowed Crown revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Co-trainer Mr J Cummings added that, in his view, Hallowed Crown was always going to be disadvantaged by the inside draw, as it races best when able to wind up and make its run. RACE 5: APN Outdoor Craven Plate (Group 3) 2000m Near the 200m, as Vilanova commenced to improve into a narrow run between Slow Pace and Danchai, the ground of Vilanova and, more particularly, Danchai was tightened when Canny Ballard (C Brown) shifted out when weakening. C Brown was told to make more effort to keep his mounts straight. When questioned concerning leaving his trailing position on the rails and being obliged to race three wide at the 1000m, C Brown stated that, when Danchai crossed Rising Romance in the lead, Rising Romance, when restrained, came back and when it did not immediately shift off the rails and, as his mount was pulling hard, he was obliged to improve to the outside of Rising Romance s heels. He added that, when Rising Romance then was directed to race one out, Canny Ballard was forced three wide. The Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr J Pride for he to arrange an endoscopic examination of Canny Ballard, the results of which were presented to the Stewards. Mr Pride indicated Canny Ballard would now be spelled. RACE 6: Bloodstock.com.au Premiere Stakes (Group 2) 1200m Generalife was slow to begin. Scorpio Queen reared on jumping. For some distance approaching and passing the 200m Generalife and Wouldnt It Be Nice came into contact as J McDonald, rider of Generalife, endeavoured to force a run between Famous Seamus and

3 3 Wouldnt It Be Nice. As a consequence, Generalife could not be fully tested at any stage. In assessing the incident, the Stewards found there was contact between Generalife and Wouldnt It Be Nice for some 150m. The Stewards deemed that S Clipperton, rider of Wouldnt It Be Nice was fully entitled to hold his line and fully entitled to ensure that Generalife did not obtain a run to his inside. Conversely, the Stewards were of the view that, riding competitively, as his mount was full of running, J McDonald was entitled to endeavour to look for a run between Famous Seamus and Wouldnt It Be Nice and particularly so when Famous Seamus had a tendency to shift in under pressure. On two occasions passing the 200m I ve Got The Looks made contact with Sincero when I ve Got The Looks was badly held up on the back of Charlie Boy. As a result of the tightening, T Angland, rider of Sincero, desisted from riding his mount out over the final stages. I ve Got The Looks was unable to be fully tested by its rider, H Bowman. When questioned, J McDonald stated that, in retrospect, he had erred in committing himself to the inside prior to the home turn and he should have angled out and made his run to the outside of the field. A post-race veterinary examination of Sincero revealed the gelding to have a healing wound to the near-side stifle. Trainer Mr S Farley undertook to report back if anything was amiss with Sincero subsequent to the race. RACE 7: The Star Epsom (Group 1) 1600m Jetset Lad bounded in the air on jumping and missed the start. Lucky Chappy and Star Rolling were slow to begin. S Clipperton, rider of Hooked, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he directed his mount in near the 1200m, which resulted in He s Your Man being badly crowded onto Lucky Chappy, resulting in both those horses being checked and losing their rightful running and Honorius being hampered. Star Rolling, which was following, was also hampered in consequence. S Clipperton s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 13 October 2014 and to expire on Monday, 27 October 2014, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account the degree of interference was at the higher end of the scale and that two runners were checked in a Group 1 race. Spy Decoder overraced in the early and middle stages and hung out from the 600m. At the 700m Boban, which was pulling hard, had to be checked off the heels of Liberty s Choice. Jetset Lad, which was following, was hampered in consequence. At the 600m Jetset Lad threw its head up and overreacted when being restrained off the heels of Boban. A post-race veterinary examination of Boban revealed the gelding was galloped on to the near hind leg. Rounding the home turn Toydini and Star Rolling came together as Toydini endeavoured to hold Star Rolling in. As a result, Star Rolling became unbalanced and bumped Toydini, resulting in both horses racing wide into the straight. At the 250m Lucky Chappy was struck across the nose by the whip of J Moreira, rider of He s Your Man. Near the 250m Woodbine, after obtaining a narrow run between Pheidon and Laser Hawk, had to be steadied and was disappointed for a run when Pheidon (T Huet) shifted out slightly under pressure, which resulted in Woodbine and Laser Hawk being tightened between Pheidon and Hooked, which shifted in slightly. T Huet was told that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mounts. In the incident Laser Hawk made contact with Liberty s Choice, which resulted in Liberty s Choice shifting out and contributing to the tightening to Boban, which was awkwardly placed to the inside of the heels of Royal Descent (H Bowman), which was shifting in under pressure. H Bowman was told to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination of Toydini revealed the gelding to be coughing. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes undertook to report back to the Stewards the results of a full veterinary check and the future race plans for Toydini. A post-race veterinary examination of Laser Hawk did not reveal any abnormalities.

4 4 RACE 8: Coolmore Flight Stakes (Group 1) 1600m On Friday afternoon, 3 October 2014 a veterinary inspection by Racing NSW veterinarian Dr C Suann revealed Muscovado unfit to start. Muscovado was subsequently withdrawn on veterinary advice. Thinking Of You was slow to begin. Thinking Of You and Lady Sharapova came together passing the 1100m when First Seal, which was inclined to overrace, shifted out to avoid the heels of Press Report. RACE 9: McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan (Group 1) 2400m On return to scale a protest was lodged by T Angland, rider of 2 nd placegetter Opinion, against Junoob being declared the winner on the grounds of interference at the 600m. In his grounds T Angland alleged that, as Junoob improved around the tiring Deane Martin, Junoob took Deane Martin to the rails in front of him when insufficiently clear, resulting in he then being held up on the heels of Deane Martin and losing ground. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, including C Munce, rider of Deane Martin, the Stewards dismissed the objection when they were satisfied that, when taken to the fence by Junoob, Deane Martin had been clear of Opinion, but the inconvenience to Opinion was caused by Deane Martin weakening quickly back through the field. As a consequence, Opinion was held up for clear running making the home turn. At a subsequent inquiry T Angland was fined the sum of $200 under AR165 for lodging a protest which, in the Stewards opinion was frivolous. At the 1700m Khalid got its head up when being checked off the heels of Kingdoms. L Cassidy, rider of Kingdoms, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that he directed his mount at the 500m to the outside of Wish Come True when insufficiently clear of La Amistad, resulting in La Amistad being tightened out across the heels of Bagman and having to be checked. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account that the degree of interference to La Amistad was compounded by Kingdoms, as the incident developed, being further taken out when Wish Come True shifted out away from Opinion as that runner commenced to improve into the race. Araldo was held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. Passing the 300m Brigantin had to be checked when disappointed for a run inside the tiring Travolta. In the early part of the straight Kingdoms was inclined to lay out and on a number of occasions bumped with Bagman, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. When questioned C Brown, rider of La Amistad stated that he was obliged to race wide throughout the early stages and, once obtaining a position close to the rails, travelled comfortably, but was under pressure as far out as the 500m. A post-race veterinary examination of La Amistad revealed the mare had lost its off hind plate in running. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes stated that La Amistad was unsuited being caught wide and was somewhat disappointing after striking interference on the home turn. Mr Hawkes undertook to report back to the Stewards on the future race plans and the progress of La Amistad subsequent to the race. J McDonald, rider of Spillway could offer no explanation for the performance of the gelding, except that it may have failed to run out the 2400m journey. B Shinn, rider of the winner, Junoob, was fined $200 under AR144 for making contact with the connections prior to weighing in. Trainer Mr B Wallace advised that Deane Martin, which weakened badly after being caught wide in the early stages, would now be returned to New Zealand and spelled. C Munce, rider of Deane Martin, stated that the principal factor for the disappointing performance of the gelding was that he had sustained a tough run, was obliged to cover additional ground in the early and middle stages and was a beaten horse at the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination of Deane Martin did not reveal any abnormalities. GENERAL: Racing NSW Stewards and the Investigation and Surveillance Unit conducted stable inspections this morning of trainers with runners engaged at today s meeting. No breaches of the Rules of Racing were detected.

Race 2: Brazen, Larrikan Prince, Sooboog, Vancouver (2), Stimac, Wolf Cry. Race 3: Hampton Court (2), Duccio, Deadset, Lady Macan, Thunder Lady, Scratch Me Lucky. Race 4: Hallowed Crown (2), Time For War, Brazen Beau (2), Nostradamus. Race 5: Slow Pace, Danchai, Canny Ballard, Rising Romance. Race 6: Generalife, Charlie Boy (2), Wouldnt It Be Nice, Scorpio Queen, I ve Got The Looks. Race 7: Boban, Star Rolling, He s Your Man (2), Ninth Legion, Lucky Chappy, Jetset Lad, Royal Descent, Hooked. Race 8: Winx (2), Thinking Of You (2). Race 9: Spillway, Brigantin, Araldo (2), Deane Martin, Disclaimer, Kingdoms, Opinion. SUMMARY Fines: Race 3: J Moreira (Hampton Court) $500 use of the whip (AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii)).
