5 Background Growth Plan launched June 2011 Primary target to increase participation by lowering barriers ESNZ Board identified the membership/horse registration system as the most significant barrier Previous research had identified a large number of riders/horses/ponies not competing in ESNZ events/shows Attendance at training events anecdotal evidence

7 Core Principles of Review That significant barriers to participation exist within ESNZ s current structures; That those barriers affect potential new participants to a greater degree than existing members; That those barriers are having a significant negative impact on the attractiveness of ESNZ competition to those not currently in membership; That those barriers are creating an increasing climate of non-compliance with ESNZ regulations at local and regional shows/events/rides; ESNZ membership is perceived as elitist, often for those with Olympic ambition;

8 Core Principles of Review That there is a large pool of riders with horses who would wish to compete in ESNZ competitions if the barriers to participation were lowered; That membership of ESNZ, at its lowest level, should be free of charge; That basic non-competing membership should be free of charge; That, where a membership fee is charged, members should pay no more than one fee; That an ESNZ member should be able to compete in all ESNZ disciplines with no additional fee.

9 Survey Results 328 completed membership survey Majority of comments endorse the core principles What members told us: Barriers to participation exist, but if lowered / reduced more people would compete Don t mind paying, but want to pay less as it is currently too expensive Want to compete more often and in more disciplines (if there was a single horse fee that covered all disciplines) Current membership structure is too complex That new members who would wish to compete in ESNZ competitions if the barriers are lowered are Pony Club, Adult Riding Club, Hunt Club and those currently competing at free training days, sports days, ribbon days.

Free would be nice but probably not realistic. That would be nice realistically there has to be some charge but perhaps lower or no entry levy.
