This isn t a loaded card, which is to be expected, since there are four monster cards coming the next two weekends, but there s some depth here and that aforementioned late Pk5 has the seems destined to deliver a big, big payoff. Give an extra look to anything Gary Contessa runs, since he s white hot right now and everything he sends out is firing. 9 Bel #1 Rapscallion (4-1) (turf only) Our Eyes: 5/21 Trailed off far turn, rail advance, rolling late, clipped heels late stretch, lost action, re-broke, running on late, strong gallop-out. UPDATE: His turf races have been very sharp, which includes a run three-back where Rosario didn t even try, so I ll come back to him again on the drop out of a dirt run against better at the Spa. The crack sprinter has won 3-of-6 this year and looks to be an easy spot while kicking off the Rainbow 6. 4 GP #7 El Gran Gayego (4-1) Our Eyes: Has been running against decent company and steps in against many multiple winners. He has the speed to have a negative effect on others that try to go with him and has a chance to run them off their feet. This is one of the finest cards I've seen in sometime. The turf continues to play very fair and quality horses are winning from anywhere. 4 Lrl #7 Skipalute (9-2) Our Eyes: Has the early speed to lull the rest of the field to sleep. Hasn't had a lot of success recently but has run with much better in my opinion. Jose Ortiz on board. Hoping for 5-1 or higher. DC Dino Herrera Dino's Playbook: Win and place bet. 5 Lrl #9 Stella Rose (5-2) (turf only) Our Eyes: 7/17 Well back, wide rush entering far turn, quickly abreast with eventual experienced winner (and solid Shug prospect), repelled late, still running on; some kind of turf debut. UPDATE: Literally toyed with her field last time, as Rosario had TONS left and never asked he to run; only the post keeps her from being a 5-star play. UPDATE: Thought he ran huge last time against MUCH better than what he meets here, and from this post he s going to be a real handful. Is in an allowance race but in reality is probably a step down from what he s been in. LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE Jeff Nahill s LRC Preview: The inside post has not been the place to be during the meet in both sprints and two-turn races. At the start of the week, the 1-post had won just 4-of- 46 (8.7%) races while posts two through four had won 47.8%. It's more of the same in routes, as only two winners came from 22 races (9.1%) while posts two through four had won 64% of their starts. Keep it in mind. 1 LRC #3 Atascaderan (6-1) Our Eyes: This gelding has scored three times over this track and has been in the money 5-of-12 times over this oval. Felipe Martinez keeps the mount off a fourth place finish. Jeff Nahill Jeff s Playbook: 4 units to win and 8 units to place. 3 LRC #3 Nothin But a Smile (3-1) Our Eyes: We are going with the process of elimination in this maiden race as trainers Marty Jones and Cliff Sise win 3% of the time first out. Meanwhile, trainer Phil D'Amato wins 16% of the time first out and the sire Grazen wins 18% first time. Here's hope this filly is ready to go. LOS ALAMITOS Terry Turrell s LA Preview: For the second night, the Pk6 will feature six Quarter Horse races ranging from yards. The Pk6 sequence has only one ML favorite lower than 5-2. I like both of my BUZZ horses in all the exotics. 3 LA #5 Gold Diggin Queen (5-1) Our Eyes: She has been on my horses-to-watch list since last spring when troubled in both starts. In a recent 220-yard gate work, she broke fast in registering a 12.3 clocking and didn't break well in her first two tries.
