The Area VII Shetland Pony & Miniature Horse Association, Inc., was incorporated on June 14, 1998 by the Board of Directors: President Marjorie Vliet, Director Virginia Flint and Director Jim Curry. It is and has always been member supported and driven, with a dynamic group of people volunteering to run the club. Area VII is an American Shetland Pony Club/American Miniature Horse Registry/American Show Pony Registry (ASPC/AMHR/ASPR) registered and recognized club that is primarily active in California, though our area encompasses California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. Our membership includes owners of both ASPC Shetlands and AMHR Miniature Horses. Area VII welcomes members from all over and you do not need to own a mini or pony to join. Area VII s membership is spread across California and Nevada at this time, with members of all ages, with varied backgrounds and interests. Area VII is primarily a club for those that enjoy their Shetlands and Miniatures, with a particular interest in showing. We are an informal group of people of all ages who gather together for the enjoyment of friendships made, and the promotion of our beautiful equine. 4 A Message from the President First off, I would like to say how honored I am to preside over this amazing club! We have so many incredible things happening this year that will make for an even better club. I am very pleased with the addition of Melissa Berschens, our new secretary, who will help offset some of the many tasks that Michele Nelson has taken on over the years. To that end, Michele has agreed to stay on as treasurer! We have Susan Browning-Wroe returning as vice-president, Robert Blackwell returning as director, and two new directors rounding out the board John Gracey and Richard Radulovich. Presently, we are finalizing the plans for main show, the California Classic, coming up the third weekend in April. Our website, has loads of information about the show. Next, we are planning a one-day performance only show at Sergeant Equestrian Center in Lodi on June 30. The show will also feature a Liberty class, so that those who want to qualify for nationals can go to two shows in Northern California. We are also planning a summer get-together, date and location to be determined. Stay tuned! Thank you for this opportunity. I look forward to serving you with enthusiasm. Award In 2017, the Area VII Board established an award, originally called the Gail Byrnes Yes We Can! Award, to be presented each year at the California Classic. This award is meant for a person who: Has a history of involvement with and support of our club Is known for his/her willingness to help others Embodies the Yes We Can spirit in any number of ways this is a person whose enthusiasm, energy, and passion have contributed to the continued success of our club and our community. This year, the Board is seeking nominations from our members for this award. All nominations will remain anonymous outside of the Nominating Committee. I have been very content with living in an apartment and having the last two stallions I still own out on long-term leases to friends with no regular contact, just happy they are well cared for with no responsibility on my part. News from Jim Curry Overnight all that changed. On Thursday I made a trip with my longtime friend Barbara Johnson to deliver her Arabian gelding to trainer Bryce Baker it was a long day traveling to and from Paso Robles. When I returned to Lodi I checked my s and Facebook page where I found a mention of a online auction for a fundraiser for a Texas club. Bidding was due to end the next day and one of the items being offered was an AMHR/ ASPC stallion donated by John Cherry. John has really nice horses and bids were very low. Barbara and I have often discussed sharing ownership on a horse, so I contacted her and she said make a bid. I did so, and now Barbara and I own SMHC Armani, a 36 eight year old stallion who has siblings that have been exported and won championships in England and Australia. His pictures reminded me very much of my stallion, Royal Splish Splash, who has a home with the Harrison family in Arkansas. At any rate, we now own a stallion that is in Texas and has to be picked up soon, and we haven t made any plans about where he will be located, which is only one of the decisions that need to be made. He will be shown, that is about all that has been decided. So much for impulse decisions! Not one we regret, just not prepared for or planned on. 5 Connie s Itsy Bitsy Ranch News With the C.S.H.A parade season over, it was a great year for Connie and Pogo. They were in 14 parades, winning all in their class, Six sweepstakes awards, High Point Champion, and the overall State Championship for Using a Norena Buckeye show cart from Ohio, Hall of Fame Rodabi J Palute Pogonip (Pogo) and Connie driving, it was a wonderful year for all. We are now looking ahead to this year and making it to the California Classic with Deer Haven Dazzler and Pogo if possible. It depends on many things, but we are trying. Deer Haven Dazzler is looking ahead to this year also being with Connies Time 2 Rumble Angelita. Pogo feels he might slow down a little. With that said we hope to see you all down the trail. Wesco Farms Ranch News It s been quiet recently with only one escapee of the year Lucy (Wesco Farms Ozs Fashionista) that doesn t want to be in the TLC pen where the fresh yearlings and seniors get the extra feed, etc., she wants to be out on the hills with the main herd. We put her in, she finds a way out. After the third time we said fine, stay there! We did get our numbers down, ending 2017 at 33. Keeping a number of seniors, retirees and that one can t leave!! horses does inhibit things LOL! The bad part going from 75+ Minis, we tend to have an abundance of spring grass (we re thinking of adding some goats). Last year we had a few horses get sore feet from it, so we have a few acres designated for those horses. It has nothing harmful as its close to a dry lot even now. As spring progresses we ll probably have the main group on limited grazing as well until it starts getting crispy and the seed heads are fallen. We did use our three stallions last Spring breeding season Topper (WCR Top Cop), Ringo (Wesco Farms Buckerowdyroo) and Ozzie (Fallen Ash Scouts Oscar) as we felt Dixon (Wesco Farms Ozs Venetian Agenda) was still a bit young and we had intentions of showing that didn t happen. He apparently didn t agree with our decision and fell/jumped into the mare/foal pen. To be safe, a stallion report was filed. As per our usual, the boys had their month of fun (May) so foals will be arriving in April. It looks like they took advantage of that time so we should have a nice selection of foals. Most are from experienced mares yeah, but I do have two maidens. Hopefully they ll be sensible and good dams like their mothers. We have started the genetic testing for the ACAN dwarfism that is currently available (John Eberth at Gluck University did this research: dwarfism). We ve only tested Topper and Ozzie so far. Both came back negative so another yeah! The goal is to work our way through the herd starting with the stallions. There is a database in Europe (where they take breeding really seriously!) which is great. Hopefully the registries will get on board one day with testing. Our LGD, Noomi, some may have seen on Facebook, was hit by the man that leases a portion of our property (purely accidental, I saw it) and ended up in emergency surgery at UCD. She s recovering well, but is not thrilled about moving vehicles anymore. As she s been taking more time off, the coyotes have moved closer and we lost a few chickens the past month. So, we re adding another LGD this spring to help out and are likely going to get a Polish Tatra. From our research they seem to wander less than some breeds and aren t as aggressive as others. Other than that, we lost our last two llamas to old age (they were 20+) along with some of our gaga special pets (horse, cat, rooster). Sadly as we re all aging this will happen more boo! I think it was also the first year I didn t buy a new horse! Part of that was trying to stick with my under 30 Minis goal, so until that happens I m trying to not look! 6 Remembering Patti Funakoshi This article will serve as a tribute to an amazing woman in the miniature horse industry. Patti Funakoshi s time in the miniature horse industry (and on this earth) was far too short. It was a life lived richly, and many have had the honor of knowing her and calling her friend. Although she did not necessarily show in AMHR, her support for her friends who attended the California Classic the past two years was unparalleled. Patti had several bouts with cancer, and even up to the end, kept fighting through the pain. She showed so much enthusiasm for others in the face of her discomfort that you Patti and her World Grand Champion Wingate s Infamous Mi. could literally feel the love surrounding you. Patti dreamt of taking a horse to the championship level. She accomplished this goal when she won the Amateur Grand Championship at the AMHA World Show in This dream started when Casey Campbell agreed to take her on as a client. Team Patti at AMHA Western Regionals, that evolved was nothing short of miraculous. The following snippets from friends illustrate a glimpse into the life of this amazing woman. Pam Brown, who was Patti s bestie, met Patti a few years ago. Patti had a tendency to appear in various places around Galt at the same time as Pam. Is this woman stalking me? she wondered. Of course, they were inseparable for the last few years, and Pam was instrumental in taking care of Patti during the hard times. Gail Byrnes, a staunch supporter of Area VII, says that Patti was the best whistler around and asked Patti to teach her. Patti instructed her to practice but to no avail. Gail would always end up with spit on her hands and no whistle! At one of the shows, Patti ordered her to whistle, and lo and behold a small whistle came out that only Patti could hear. Gail still remembers how Patti beamed and stated I knew you could do it! Penny Radulavich says that Patti was always willing to lend a hand with a smile! Haley Yost, a groomer and instrumental employee in Casey s barn says that Patti was not your average human being. Indeed, she was an angel on earth. Anyone who encountered Patti was impacted positively. She is the only person Hayley knew who could fill a church to capacity to pay their respects. Patti was one in a million, and Hayley is forever changed because of her. Casey and his sister Kelly s poignant speech at her service depicted a woman who changed their lives in undefined ways. Her mere presence changed them as people, and not a dry eye was in the house after they told us of the good times they shared with Patti on the road and at the shows. Truly an extraordinary woman, I am thankful I had the privilege to be her friend. 7 News from Black Mountain Miniatures At the time of this writing, it is so warm on Black Mountain that I can not help but be thinking of Spring, Spring here means more than longer and warmer days. It means foaling and breeding horses. Every Spring is exciting but this Spring is particularly exciting. I have five mares that are getting ready to have their first foals. Four of these mares are bred to my Rhapsody s Latin Tango son, Black Mountain Tango s El Presidente. At just two years old, Presidente settled all four exposed mares. The remaining first time pregnant mare and two champion show quality producing mares are bred to Establo Martini on the Rocks, a Grand Champion producing stallion. For the last four to five years, I have been working toward having a breeding herd that produces Shetland/Miniature blends. This Spring, I will be able to realize that goal. All the foals will be Shetland/Miniature blends. I wish everyone beautiful, healthy 2018 foals.
