Notice Board Happy December Birthdays To Ellie Augustine Regan Crabtree Montana Stuart December 9th Gymkhana & Christmas Break Up Happy January Birthdays To Matilda Baldwin Cassie Bebbington Sienna McKie-Post What is the gymkhana and Awards Night? Many of you have questions as to how the Gymkhana and Awards Night works. Over the next couple of pages we have tried our very best to explain it to you. It is a fun day where everyone gets to have a go at everything. The children really enjoy themselves and many look forward to it all year. After the Gymkhana finishes usually about 1.30pm- 2pm we all pack up then go home with the ponies and get changed and return to Pony Club for a 6pm start for our awards night. The Awards night runs much like any football or cricket presentation night where we recognise children s and parents achievements and contributions throughout the year. Everyone is encouraged to attend as most of the children are in the presentations. Please bring along your own drinks. No one is to ride on Pony Club grounds unless they are insured

Gymkhana 2017 What is our break up Gymkhana? A Gymkhana is a fun day for every child and horse. The activities organised have been designed so that every child can have a go at everything. PLEASE NOTE: ALL HORSES/PONIES DOING SHOWING CLASSES MUST WEAR A SNAFFLE BIT am start ON YOUR HORSE Best Presented We start the day with best presented for all groups. This is where you line up on the main ménage in your allocated groups and are gear checked. You are also checked for cleanliness of your horse, cleanliness of your gear and cleanliness of the rider. Ribbons are given out at the end of each class. Pony Club Rider Class This class is judged on the riders NOT the Horses. The riders will ride in the ring until the judge asks them to do things i.e. walk, trot, canter etc. this is focusing on the rider and their position. They will look for things like heels down holding the reins properly asking for the up and down transitions correctly (in older classes they will also look at whether the rider is on the correct diagonals/canter leads etc.) Then the judge may line you all up and ask you to do a workout, which will be a bit of walk/trot/canter (depending on ability). Ribbons are given out at the end of each class. Pairs This is a fun activity whereby riders are asked to pair up. Usually they choose friends or horses that are similar in height etc. The judge will ask you to do activities together i.e. walk trot etc. so try to choose a pair of horses that like each other. Maybe even organise it before hand and have a little practice in the morning. Ribbons are given out at the end of each class. Handy Mount An obstacle course is set up with activities like trotting through some poles carrying things etc. Each child rides through the obstacle course and the fastest time wins. You will be competing in your groups for scoring purposes however you may go to this activity at any time during your allocated time. The presentation for Handy mount will be at the awards night. Showjumping Will be a Freshman s course for the 4 bottom groups but you will still be expected to jump in your allocated grades as per the December Groups List. All riders have their grading marked beside their names. If they are incorrect please let Pam know before the rally. You may go to this activity at any time during your allocated time. The presentation for Showjumping will be at the awards night. Fancy Dress This is very competitive & you will need to think hard on what you can do. Past winners have included The Queen, A fireman & a swimming horse & rider. Fancy Dress Rules from PCAV 18 Fancy Dress 18.1 Helmets Always required Boots Always required Armband Always required Horse Leg Wear Leg wear of any description is not permitted Spurs Not permitted. Please also try your Fancy Dress Costumes on your horses before you come to the rally. Pony Club Mount Much like the rider class except this is judged on the HORSE and the suitability of the horse for Pony Club. In this class you will be asked to work your horses out and may be asked to go over a small obstacle or jump. Ribbons are given out at the end of each class. Best Trick Get your imaginations flowing & see what you can come up with & maybe a quick practice before coming to the gymkhana. Pleasure Mount This is judged on the HORSE, they will need to go around on a loose rein at walk, trot, canter, halt & over a jump. Bareback Rider This is without a saddle on your horse. For those that are not comfortable without a saddle can ride with no stirrups instead.

End of Year Break Up What Happens on the awards night? Everyone takes their horses home after the Gymkhana and returns by 5.30pm. We start off with our tea then we then have our awards presentation for the night where we present, the Instructors Awards, Most Improved Awards, our Zone Awards and State Awards amongst others. The cost of the awards night is $20.00 per family and everyone is asked to provide a small offering of nominated food. We also present our Major Awards The Riddle Family Award The Riddle family have been involved with our club for 30+ years & Linda was the DC when our club formed she is also one of our Life Members. All of her children rode at the club & both the girls have been instructors as well. The Riddle family felt they should have a perpetual trophy to the family who shows great commitment & involvement to the club over the year. The family that will win this award have shown a huge involvement since they joined our club. They have put in more than most & are always helping out at EVERY event & more than happy to be involved in the club in anyway. Stan Finch Award To most of you who didn't know Stan he was an extremely devoted worker for our club who always was thinking of ways to help improve the grounds, he was always standing behind a shovel not necessarily using it but guiding (maybe telling) those around him how to get it how HE wanted it. He taught a lot of our children who have now left over the years & gave them all a special amount of time & understanding. We hold this award very highly as he taught our children that anything you did was always good enough just because you had tried your best. The award is given to someone who has shown they have tried but not necessarily achieved anything. Also to a showjumper or eventer as that s what Stan liked the most. Jan Bell Horsemanship Award This is for someone who has been committed to their horse & has achieved results not necessarily in leaps & bounds but in small steps. They have taken a step forward with their horse & found the achievement to be rewarding. They have also maintained consistent horsemanship with their horse. (Mainly about horse & rider). DC s Award This Award is about encouragement. Not everyone can get their horse to do all the right moves & not everyone has the right horse. This award recognises this achievement they have put in over not just this year but in years gone on. They have been involved with the club events & helped the club out a lot behind the scenes. President s Award. For someone who has helped the club out a lot behind the scenes. Brenda Mitton Pony Club Service Award. Recognition of our riding members who regularly help at the club at events, pony club rallies & junior committee events. Itchy Award. This award was in memory of one of our ex members pony who was sadly lost in the 2009 bushfires. This award recognises ponies who have been a valued representative for our Pony Club. Junior Committee Pony Club Spirit Award The Junior committee vote on who they feel has represented the Pony club throughout their pony club years in the true Pony Club spirit. Some of the qualities of the Pony Club Spirit are encouraging other pony club members, being part of a team & never giving up. Junior Committee Encouragement Award. The Junior committee vote on who they feel needs a little extra encouragement as things haven t always been easy. SET UP FOR GYMKHANA This will be on Friday afternoon from 5pm we will be raking all menage s, setting up a Showjumping ring on the Main menage & a handimount course on the small red arena. The more helpers we have the quicker we get home to clean our horses. Gymkhana Cost The cost for the gymkhana will be $20 per rider & $10 for extra siblings. Awards Night Cost The cost of the Awards night will be $25 Family or $10 per person. Hamper for Raffle Could each family bring one thing either to the Gymkhana or on the night, so we can make up some hampers for a raffle. Tickets will be sold during the day as well as the night.

Article Does my horse need a companion? Out & About This Article has been sourced from the RSPCA Australia Knowledge base. Does my horse need a companion? Horses naturally live in herds and a normal horse is never alone by choice. These facts drive the behavior of horses and cause them to do some of the things that can seem irrational to us - such as panic if they get separated from other horses. Living as part of a herd has many advantages for horses such as safety in numbers. A horse living alone in the wild would be much more likely to be caught by a predator therefore horses feel safer when they have other horses around them. Horses take it in turns to watch over each other while they sleep. One horse usually stays standing when the others are asleep on the ground. This horse is more alert than the others (even if dozing) while the others sleep more deeply. This is a good example of how herds operate. When not eating or sleeping horses carry out many other social behaviors termed loafing'. Loafing includes activities such as mutual grooming and playing. Mutual grooming, which is where horses use their incisor teeth to groom each other, is a very important behavior for horses. Areas that they cannot reach themselves can be scratched by the other horse. It is also a way of maintaining bonds among herd members. Horses regularly simply stand together in the shade, nose to tail during hot weather, using their tails to keep flies off each other. In cold, wet weather horses will stand in a sheltered spot together because their large bodies help to keep each other warm. Playing and running around together is another very important behavior for horses of all ages. Why is this important for my domestic horse? Domestic horses have the same instincts and behave in much the same way that their free living cousins, therefore if we ignore these facts about their natural behavior we can cause them to be stressed. Domestic horses do not reason that they do not need to worry about predators. Their instincts tell them that there are predators lurking around every corner and therefore they still feel much safer in a herd than alone. Horses that live alone do not get to benefit from the shared responsibilities of herd life and all the benefits of social behavior. How will I know if my horse is stressed? A horse that is stressed due to a lack of companionship may show behaviors that include running around a lot (usually up and down the fence line that prevents the horse from reaching other horses) and whinnying. They may also lose weight. A horse that has been separated from other horses for a long time may show dull switched off behavior termed learned helplessness'. Can a different type of animal be a substitute for another horse? A horse will bond with another type of animal if that is all that is available. Horses will bond with many other types of animal if another horse is not available. In a stabled situation horses have even been known to bond with a chicken or a cat, but another horse is by far and away the best companion. Different types of animals behave in different ways which does not usually fulfil each of the animal s needs. For example sheep and cows are ruminant animals which means that they eat more quickly than a horse and then spend more time laying down ruminating, whereas horses spend longer grazing and digest their food whilst grazing.

Can a human be a substitute for another horse? Horses need other horses. Humans do not make a good enough substitute for another horse. Apart from the fact that a human cannot be with their horse 24/7, they cannot perform the functions that another horse can such as mutual grooming, standing over the horse while he or she sleeps and playing any of the many (very boisterous) games that healthy horses play. It is not acceptable practice to deliberately keep your horse without the company of other horses so that he or she bonds more strongly with you. Ideally a horse should always be able to see and touch another horse. If horses are separated by fences into individual paddocks they can still become stressed and will often suffer from fence injuries in their attempts to interact with other horses. Keeping horses in herds' will give them the companionship they need and also allows you to manage your pasture better because then paddocks can be rested for periods between grazing periods which allows the pasture to re-grow. Horses can be separated into individual yards or stables for the short time that it takes to eat any supplementary feed both for their safety and the safety of handlers.
