5 Student Sporting Profile Yr13 Charlotte West Sports Captain I have never been the most focussed of student; I m always thinking about what I would rather be doing and, for me, this has always been doing something sport related. I have tried to participate in as many sports as I can, and even now, I haven t really specialised in one sport. Whilst at primary school, I took part in anything. Name a sport and I would have tried it; gymnastics, dance, football, netball, swimming, the list could go on. I have never preferred performing in individual or team sports because at the end of the day, I will still be doing something that I enjoy. My first involvement in competitive sports came when I was 7 in netball (Woodley Netball Club) and football (Laurel Park FC). I enjoyed them equally, but training alongside all my other sports became very difficult as I grew older so one had to go, which unfortunately was netball. I was fortunate, however, to be able to continue playing netball in the school team and still play matches for the school now. Since I was 10 I have been part of Albatross Diving Club and Reading Athletics club, following an introduction to diving from council lessons at Central Pool and athletics at Aldryngton primary school where I enjoyed cross-country in the winter and athletics in the summer. Through athletics I have tried multiple events, including pole-vault, hurdling, discus and cross country, however I soon realized that these weren t the disciplines I wanted to continue. Instead, I decided I wanted to follow my sister s path and become a javelin thrower. Coaching has been a challenge as there was no permanent coach at Reading so my sister stepped in and no matter how much I thought I was right and she was wrong, she has always been there to give me tips and tell me how to improve. With hard work and determination, I managed to make the English s final when I was first year under 15, however, I got so nervous at my first big national event that I didn t even throw the qualifying standard. After this, I realized that if I wanted to become one of the best, I had to train more and start working harder to get to where I wanted to be. To do this, I started to train regularly both outdoor and started indoor strength and conditioning sessions in the gym. Diving is another sport I got into because of my sister. I enjoyed swimming and gymnastics, and diving was the perfect combination; the ability to fall off a board in style. I couldn t get enough of it, so my coach made me trial for Albatross Diving Club Reading where within half a year of joining I competed in my first national event; National Skills. Following this I moved straight into Age Groups where I competed from 2012 to 2017 culminating in an incredible year achieving a gold and two silvers at the Swim England National Age Group Diving Championships in Sheffield, the same weekend as competing in my second English s National Athletics Final in Birmingham tough I know but my mum is fortunately a willing driver. Following my Age Group achievements I went to Rome where I won silver on the 1m springboard against divers across Europe and as a result I qualified for the GB Junior Elite Diving Championships in As said previously, in 2017 I competed in my second English s National Athletics Final following qualification at Berkshire schools with a pb throw of 41.45m. Following qualification I did not think I could throw any better and I went into the competition trying to forget about what happened last time. Maybe it was the positive attitude, maybe I was relaxed from my silver diving medal of the previous day but whatever it was I matched my qualification throw with 41.13m leaving me ranking 8 th in the country. So could 2018 really be any better, I didn t expect so, but in diving April saw me compete on 1m and 3m springboards at the GB Junior Elite Diving Championships in Plymouth ranking 10 th in Great Britain and in July I went to Barcelona where I gained a bronze medal in the 3m mixed synchronised diving with my brother, James West. Through diving I have gained the Athlete Excellence Award, a recognized external qualification that will give me UCAS points and was funded at a training camp this summer in Croatia. In November I will be competing in Aachen, Germany. In javelin I qualified to represent Berkshire once more in the 2018 English s Athletics Final after keeping my Berkshire s champion title for the 4 th year running despite being the youngest in my age group and now throwing the women s weight javelin. I walked into the competition ranked 8 th without expecting to make the coveted top 8 cut but, in my second throw I threw yet another 3 metre pb of 42.78m pushing me up to a final 4 th place position. Looking back maybe my sister showed me the path in some sports but this has seemed to come to an end as she has decided to take up Iron Man and do marathon running, and I stopped distance running for a reason. It hurts even more than diving. I have been really lucky that in my primary school and at Maiden Erlegh the schools have supported me in my interest of sport by giving me lots of opportunities to be involved inside school and allowed me the time off that I have needed to compete outside of school. It has been difficult balancing my social life, school work, and sports but I have managed a good balance and found that even during the GCSE s I was able to carry on training and this helped relieve the pressure of revision. At the end of the day it has been worth it and I couldn t have asked for a better sporting life, my opportunities have been incredible and I have made so many friends and as a result I cannot see a time when sport will not play an important part in my life.

7 The PE Department In October half term, PE s Miss Chapman & Mr Pringle took on the challenge of climbing the three tallest peaks in England, Scotland & Wales in 24 hours. They did the Three Peaks Challenge to raise vital funds for a local disability sport charity SportsAble. They raised over 5,000 for this worthwhile cause. If you are interested in adding to their fundraising efforts, their fundraising link is below: Over the last weekend, of the recent school holidays, Yr9 Katie Rolfe-Sturgess travelled to Birmingham and spent two full days attending the British Ballet Organisation Scholars weekend. This involved workshops in genres including: musical theatre, ballet, contemporary, Pointe and jazz. Katie is so committed to dance and it is fantastic that she is reaping the rewards of her dedication. Well done Maiden Erlegh team, competing out in Aachen, Germany for Albatross Diving Club. Yr9 James West & Yr13 Charlotte West competing again on the international stage and James once again came away with bronze on 1m. Well done former Maiden Erlegh pupil Matt Pipe who is on the coaching roster. Congratulations to Yr8 Gemma who has been selected to represent the Berkshire U13 County Football league side
