Albany defeated No. 14 Boston College, 16-12, on March 12 to capture a key nonconference upset, but then went just 3-3 in conference play, claiming the final, #4 seed, for the America East Tournament. However, the Great Danes then launched themselves into the national postseason, with back-to-back upsets of top-seed Boston University and #2 Stony Brook, to qualify for their second-straight NCAA Tournament. Albany s offense is led by sophomore Ariana Parker and junior Jess Antelmi, as Parker has 38 goals, 15 assists and 53 points to Antelmi s 27 goals, 25 assists and 52 points. Mel Rorie and Anna Berman are tied for the team lead with 29 ground balls apiece, and Rorie also has a team-high 20 caused turnovers. Rachel Burek champions the midfield with 64 draw controls, ranking 25th in the nation. In the cage, Berman has started all-but-one game, making 87 saves, tabbing a 9.72 GAA and a.358 save percentage. LAST TIME OUT: No. 3 Florida earned its first-ever ALC Tournament title last weekend, edging Ohio State, 5-4, in the lowest-scoring game in Gator history, and then dominating five-time defending tournament champion Northwestern, The freshmen championed the Gators offense in the tournament, scoring four of the five goals in the semifinals and eight of the 14 in the finals. Nora Barry scored the first two goals against Ohio State, and after the Buckeyes tied the score at three, Nicole Graziano put up back-to-back goals to give Florida a pass to the finals. Emily Dohony marshalled the defense, earning six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Brittany Dashiell had a goal, two assists, two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Shannon Gilroy was the talk of the town on Saturday, scoring seven goals against Northwestern to match the Wildcats goal total on the day. Mikey Meagher made nine saves on the day and earned a combined.560 save percentage over both games to earn ALC All- Tournament MVP. 2 NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES THIRD-YEAR PROGRAMS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: There are four programs in the history of the NCAA Tournament (since 1982) that have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in their third season as a program: North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse and Northwestern. UNC, founded in 1996, had the most success in its third season, claiming the #2 seed (field of 12) and advancing to the Final Four. Duke (established in 1996) and Syracuse (began in 1998) both were unseeded and lost in the first round of their respective 12- team tournaments. Northwestern, originally founded in 1982, turned club after 1992 and reinstated in 2002, made the tournament in the third year of both segments. NU was unseeded in the 12-team tournament in 1984, advanced to the quarterfinals but lost to Head Coach Amanda O Leary s National Champion Temple squad, NU part two earned the seventh seed in 2004, and fell in the quarterfinals once again, this time in a field of 16. The Wildcats earned the No. 1 seed and won their first (of many) National Championships the following season, in 2005, giving the Gators one chance at making history. Junior All-Americans Kitty Cullen and Ashley Bruns each scored three goals apiece, but a flurry of goals by the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels at the end of the first half proved too much for the No. 4 Florida lacrosse team to overcome, as UF dropped its first contest of the year, The Gators got off to a strong start in the game, as freshman Nora Barry won the opening draw and quickly got the ball to All-American Kitty Cullen who put the Gators on the board with a free-position goal just 35 seconds after the opening whistle. Dashiell won the next draw, and drove the ball down to the Tar Heels end. A foul inside the arc gave Dashiell a freeposition attempt, which she converted at 27:58 to give the Gators a speedy 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels battled back at 25:26, as sophomore Abbey Friend notched a free-position goal of her own to get North Carolina on the board. Kara Cannizzaro tied the score at two just over five minutes later, and Friend netted another goal, assisted by Becky Lynch, to take UNC s first lead at 18:15. At 18:03, UNC s Lynch got the first yellow card of the season, and at 17:07, Caroline Chesterman scored the Gators first-ever official man-up goal, assisted by Dashiell, to tie the score at three. Both teams went on a scoring drought over the next eight minutes, until Brittney Coppa broke the silence at 8:59 with an unassisted goal to regain the Tar Heels lead, 4-3. North Carolina went on a hot streak in the final three minutes of the half, scoring three unanswered goals, including a buzzer-beater by Kara Cannizzaro, to go to the locker room riding a solid 7-3 lead. Freshman Nora Barry followed with three goals, and classmate Shannon Gilroy scored a pair of goals and four draw controls. Nicole Graziano recorded a goal and two assists to go along with two ground balls, a draw control and a team-high two caused turnovers. Additionally, Kayla Stolins earned three draw controls. Goalies Mikey Meagher and KC Emerson each had nine saves in the full 66:58. The Blue Jays struck first, as Colleen McCaffrey worked a spin move from the right side for an early goal at 28:35. Kitty Cullen replied with a free-position goal at 27:53, her 50th point of the season, but Johns Hopkins went back ahead, 3-1, on backto-back goals by D Amore and McCaffrey. At 12:42, Brittany Dashiell netted a one-timer from Nicole Graziano, which sparked a 6-0 run for the Gators, putting them ahead 9-5 midway through the second half. Hopkins refused to back down, and just six seconds later, Candace Rossi won the draw control and netted the first Blue Jays goal in 28 minutes. The JHU tally sparked a 3-goal run which brought the Blue Jays within one, 9-8. Alyssa Kildare headed to the sidelines with a yellow card at 8:08, and just under a minute later, Nicole Graziano intercepted a clear attempt by Emerson and scored goal number 10 for the Gators. Taylor D Amore kept Hopkins in the game, netting a crossing shot from the left side at 5:55, to once again pull within one. Then, just 51 seconds later, D Amore found an open Sammy Cermack, who slipped one past the Gators defense to tie the score at 10. Candace Rossi won the ensuing draw control, and after running several minutes off the clock, she found her opportunity and netted the go-ahead goal for the Blue Jays with 1:13 to go in regulation. Gilroy controlled the next draw, but the Gators had a free-position goal waved off with 34 seconds to go, returning possession to Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays seemingly had it in the bag, but Jamie Reeg forced a turnover on JHU s clear attempt, giving the Gators another chance to tie it, and with seven seconds to go, Gabi Wiegand netted an FPG to send it to overtime. Stolins won the opening draw of overtime, but a save by Emerson on a Cullen FPA gave possession to the Blue Jays, and 2:26 into OT, Cermack scored her second goal of the day to give JHU the first advantage, Nevertheless, with five seconds left in the first half of OT, Cullen drove the ball past several defenders and found the back of the net to tie the score and force 2OT. D Amore controlled the opening draw of double overtime, but a huge turnover caused by Sally Jentis put the ball back in Florida s hands. On off-ball foul by Cermack created an FPA for the Gators, and Nora Barry shot in the game-winner, giving Florida its first-ever overtime victory. 15 GAME RECAPS GAME 16 No. 5 Florida 17, No. 17 Vanderbilt 5 April 14, 2012 Gainesville, Fla. Florida closed out the home season in style, cruising to a 17-5 conference victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt. Brittany Dashiell scored a career-high-tying six points to lead the Gators to their 10th-straight victory, running Florida s record to 14-2 (4-0 ALC) with one game to go in the regular season. Dashiell led both teams with six points on the afternoon, scoring two goals and tying the school record with four assists. Kitty Cullen was tops on the Gators with five goals, and Shannon Gilroy followed closely with four. Caroline Chesterman recorded three goals, Ashley Bruns put up two goals and an assist, and National Rookie of the Week Nora Barry scored the remaining goal and assist, adding a team-high five draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Before the game, Coach O Leary stressed the importance of winning the battle for possession, which the Gators excelled at this afternoon, leading 15-9 in draw controls and in shots. Emily Dohony and Mikey Meagher each recorded three ground balls on defense, and Dohony also caused two turnovers. Meagher made seven saves and allowed just five goals in the complete game, while Commodore keeper Natalie Wills put up nine saves but gave up all 17 scores. Senior midfielder Ally Carey, a 2011 First-Team All-ALC selection, led the Commodores with two goals, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Kitty Cullen got the scoring started two and a half minutes in, taking the ball across the midfield and driving into the arc for an unassisted goal. Carly Linthicum bounced a shot past Meagher 59 seconds later, but the Gators followed with an 8-0 run to head into the half leading 9-1. Ally Carey scored her first goal of the afternoon for the Commodores with 28:55 to play in the second half, but Dashiell notched the first of her two goals at 26:57, and a wraparound diving goal from Chesterman made it 10-2 in favor of the Gators. The Commodores continued to fight, scoring three of the next four goals over a stretch of three and a half minutes, but they were unable to complete the comeback, as Florida closed out the second half on a 5-goal run for a final score of The 12-goal gap marks the highest scoring margin for the Gators against an ALC opponent, topping their 14-3 defeat of Johns Hopkins in the 2010 ALC Tournament. GAME 17 No. 5 Florida 8, No. 1 Northwestern 7 April 21, 2012 Evanston, Ill. A 4-point effort from Gabi Wiegand and a stellar performance by the Gator defense led the Florida lacrosse team past the undefeated, top-ranked Northwestern Wildcats, 8-7, to capture the Gators second-straight American Lacrosse Conference regular-season title. Wiegand led the Gators with a total of four points on the afternoon, recording two goals and two assists including the game-winner with under six minutes to go in the second half. Ashley Bruns and Brittany Dashiell each scored a pair of goals, and Nora Barry put up a goal and an assist. Kitty Cullen drove in a goal in the first half, and Nicole Graziano assisted the game-tyer late in the second. Sam Farrell anchored a remarkable Florida defense, scooping up three ground balls and causing three big turnovers. Dashiell added another three ground balls and Shannon Gilroy had a team-high three draw controls. Mikey Meagher made seven saves in the game and held the Cats to their lowest goal total of the year. Shannon Gilroy, facing draw specialist Alyssa Leonard, won the opening draw, and just over a minute into the game, Brittany Dashiell put the Gators on the board with a line drive from the right side. Ashley Bruns then netted a quick stick from Wiegand on the following possession to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. At 24:51, Smith scored the first Wildcat goal, and a minute and a half later, Thornton netted a free-position goal to tie the score at two. The score wasn t tied for long, as Cullen snagged the next draw out of mid-air and drove right into the goal to put UF back on top just 10 seconds later. Wiegand extended the lead back to two on a free-position goal, and after a 16-minute scoring drought, Wiegand found Dashiell making a cut across the arc to head into the break up 5-2. The Wildcats emerged from the locker room a new team, scoring three goals in a 56-second span to tie the score at five. However, just 27 seconds later, a foul inside the arc put the ball in Nora Barry s hand, who sent a quick pass to Bruns to put the Gators back in front, 6-5. Northwestern mimicked UF s free-position play twice over the next five minutes, to hand the Cats their first lead of the day, up 7-6. The Wildcats were in front for just 57 seconds, when Nicole Graziano connected with Nora Barry from the left side of the fan at 19:54, to tie the score once again, 7-7. The game remained tied for a nail-biting 14 minutes, but with 5:47 to play, Wiegand found the top-left corner of the net to give the Gators an 8-7 advantage. NU controlled the ensuing draw, but the Florida defense held the Cats to just one shot in the final five minutes, to bring the ALC regular-season title back to Gainesville for the second-straight year with a final score of 8-7. GAME 18 No. 3 Florida 5, No. 14 Ohio State 4 ALC Semifinals May 4, 2012 Gainesville, Fla. In an all-out defensive battle, the Florida Gators fought their way to the top, defeating No. 14 Ohio State, 5-4, in the ALC Tournament Semifinals. Buckeye freshman Tori DeScenza made 15 saves in the game, but the Gators back line limited OSU to just nine shots on goal, to pull out the one-goal victory. After freshmen Nora Barry and Shannon Gilroy combined for six of the Gators 10 goals at Ohio State back in March, Barry and fellow-rookie Nicole Graziano each put up a pair of goals this evening, while junior middie Brittany Dashiell scored the remaining goal and notched two assists. Gabi Wiegand and Caroline Chesterman tallied an additional assist apiece. Junior defender Emily Dohony tied the Gators season high with six ground balls in the game, while Barry set a new single-season record in the game, notching five ground balls to break Dashiell s 2010 record of 38, now owning 41. Shannon Gilroy nabbed three of the Gators seven draw controls, also setting a new season record with 63. Dohony and Dashiell anchored the UF back line, each causing three turnovers to contribute to the Gators season-best 11 forced TOs. Nora Barry got the scoring started at 20:48 in the first half, when Gabi Wiegand tossed a perfect pass from the left side to Barry in front of the net, earning the second-ever man-down goal for Florida. Alayna Markwordt evened the score on a wraparound goal just over a minute later, but Barry struck again, this time assisted by Dashiell, to put UF back ahead, 2-1. The remaining 18:49 of the first half featured 13 shots and six turnovers but no more points on the board, as the Gators headed to the break holding a slight, 2-1, advantage. The scoring drought continued another eight-and-ahalf minutes, until Caroline Chesterman found Dashiell breaking in towards the goal circle and lifted a perfect pass from the point to stun DeScenza with goal number three. However, the Buckeyes were far from out of it, and at 16:46, Markwordt bounced in her second unassisted goal to cut the lead to one. Rachel Wiederkehr won the ensuing draw, and just 17 seconds later, Markwordt did it again, knotting the score at three. The score remained tied for just over four minutes, when freshman Nicole Graziano dove through the 8-meter arc and laced in a hard line drive to give the lead back to the Gators, and less than two minutes later, Dashiell connected with Graziano for Florida s fifth goal of the night, to give UF a small cushion to protect in the final 10 minutes. The Gators back line kept the Buckeyes silent for close to 10 minutes, but with seven seconds left on the clock, Gabby Capuzzi cut the lead down to one, 5-4. The stage was set for an Ohio State comeback, but freshman draw specialist Shannon Gilroy controlled the final draw and kept OSU from a chance at the game-tyer, as UF held on to win, 5-4. 16 GAME RECAPS GAME 19 No. 3 Florida 14, No. 1 Northwestern 7 ALC Championship May 5, 2012 Gainesville, Fla. Freshman draw specialist Shannon Gilroy scored seven goals and greatly contributed to the Gators 18-5 slant on draw controls to help lead the Gators past top-ranked Northwestern, 14-7, to claim their firstever ALC Tournament title. Tournament MVP Mikey Meagher made nine stops in the cage, and once again held Northwestern to just seven goals, tying the season-low seven NU scored against UF last game. The Wildcats have lost just nine games since the start of 2005, three of which were to the University of Florida. After capturing the 2012 ALC regular-season title in Evanston, Ill. on April 21, Florida did it again, downing NU by their largest margin of defeat since Additionally, with their two wins over Northwestern this year, Florida is the first team since the 2002 relaunching of the team to defeat the Cats twice in the same season. Shannon Gilroy had a standout performance in the midfield, scoring seven goals, nabbing three draw controls, and helping the Gators to dominate on the draw, Kitty Cullen notched three goals and an assist, while Caroline Chesterman had two goals and an assist. Gilroy, Brittany Dashiell and Kayla Stolins each had three draw controls, and Stolins, Sam Farrell and Jamie Reeg caused a pair of turnovers apiece. Additionally, Reeg kept Shannon Smith scoreless, ending her nation-leading 62-game scoring streak. Florida did not allow an assist to either opponent in the ALC Tournament, and for the second straight time against NU, the Gators gave up just two goals from the field. Stolins won the opening draw, and just 41 seconds in, Dashiell passed up the Chesterman right in front of the net for the first goal of the game. Kara Mupo evened score on a free-position goal at 25:08, but back-to-back goals by Gilroy and a pair of freeposition goals by Cullen gave the Gators a 5-1 lead, which they never relinquished the rest of the game. Taylor Thornton netted a free-position goal at 5:33, but Cullen set up Gilroy in the arc at 3:03 to regain the fourgoal lead. Amanda Macaluso notched her first of three on the afternoon with 21 seconds remaining in the first half, but Gilroy got the ensuing draw to Nicole Graziano who sent it back to Gilroy for one more before the horn sounded, heading to the locker room with a comfortable, 7-3, lead. Macaluso chipped away at the Gators lead early in the second half with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes, but a 3-0 run featuring goals by Dashiell, Chesterman and Cullen gave UF an 11-5 lead with 12:44 to play, pushing a comeback nearly out of reach. The Wildcats scored two of the next three, but a pair of late goals by Gilroy and ALC Rookie of the Year Nora Barry put it away, as the Gators won their first-ever ALC Tournament Championship, GAME 20 Albany at No. 1 Florida NCAA First Round May 12, 2012 Gainesville, Fla.
