6 City Of Prince George A Brief History The origins of Prince George can be traced to the fur trading post of Fort George, established in 1807 by Simon Fraser. The post was centered in the centuries-old homeland of the Lheidli T'Enneh First Nation. Agricultural settlement around Fort George began about 1906 when it was realized that the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (later CN Rail) would pass near the fur post. The railway arrived in 1914 and construction of the railway townsite commenced. The City of Prince George was incorporated on March 6, Growth was slow until the 1950's when many people arrived from the prairies and Europe to work in the sawmills. The 1960's and 70's were years of remarkable growth associated with modernization of the sawmill industry and construction of three pulp mills. By 1997, the population was over 75,000. The City's economy is based on the forest industry with fourteen sawmills, two single pulp mills and a twinned pulp mill, one of the largest in the world. Wood products manufacturing, a refinery, a brewery, chemical plants and diesel locomotive repair shops contribute to the industrial base. The City's role as a regional centre is highlighted by a large, modern library and hospital, a regional college, the main campus of the University of Northern British Columbia, two museums, an art gallery, amateur theatre groups and a symphony orchestra. When entering the city, be sure to wave at "Mr PG" a whimsical 8.2m/27ft tall statue, who stands at the junction of Highways 97 and 16, waving his flag. Downtown Prince George: There are a number of restaurants, take out restaurants, and small stores located in the downtown area. The locally owned businesses typically sell specialty items. There are many more stores located outside the downtown core. Shopping: While downtown offers specialty shopping, a strip mall is located close to downtown ( th Ave) with a large drug store (London Drugs), a movie theatre, the Hudson's Bay department store, Coast Mountain Sports, a golf shop and other retail stores. Pine Centre Mall ( Massey Dr) has a range of shopping from clothing and sports stores to Sears and Zellers. Other stores in Prince George include Canadian Tire, JYSK, Winners, Mark's, Home Depot, Staples Business Depot, Future Shop and many more. An Experience that is Fun and Safe! 6

7 Activities And Attractions There are attractions in Prince George for the cultured, the adventurous or the history buff. Visit the local museums and discover Prince George through interpretive exhibits at Exploration Place, Huble Homestead, and the Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum. The Two Rivers Gallery (725 Civic Plaza) is located in downtown Prince George. Spend a day with the family at Exploration Place, which has interactive and historic exhibits, with a heavy focus on science and nature. Or learn more about the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and its importance to the area, at The Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum. 8 Outdoor Activities: Prince George offers fantastic freshwater fishing, hiking trails, golf and more. Gardens & City Parks : Fort George Park is Prince George's main urban park. Many of the city's festivals & events are held at the Fort George Park Bandshell. Swimming: Prince George has two main indoor aquatic centres for swimming. The university is beautifully built on a hill overlooking the city. UNBC sports centre offers several facilities at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre and are available for private rentals. The gymnasiums, fields, studio, and Wolf Club multi-purpose room are available for exclusive use. The track and weight rooms are available for group-rate use, though remain open to members during most bookings.
