A message from the Board It s Hockey Season Inside this issue: A message from the Board 2-3 Sponsors 4 Try Hockey for Free Recap 5 Shop with Scrip 6 Boosters 7 Raffle Tickets & Dibs 8-9 High School Hockey 10 Trophy Case & Hot Players Golf Tournament Highlights Skate Sharpening Deals 19 Fundraising 20 The Puck Has Dropped Hockey is at full throttle! Our traveling teams have been on the go for six weeks strong and our Mites, Mini-Mites, 8U and 6U Girls are off and running. The final Team Tally is: 1 Jr Gold 4 Bantam 6 Peewee 6 Squirt 2 Girls 12U 2 Girls 10U 7 Mites 8 Mini-Mites 1 Termite 2 Girls 8U 1 Girls 6U How Many Teams Is That? That s 40 Youth Hockey Teams in tiny little Rosemount spanning 640 skaters. This represents the third straight year that our numbers have increased by at least 10% over the previous year. And this year, we are up 13% over last year when we had 568 skaters. Add in the 3 Boys and Girls High School teams and we have 43 teams and close to 700 hockey players. In The State Of Hockey Rosemount is starting to make an argument as being one of the Cities of Hockey in the State of Hockey. There is one problem though. We have just One Full Size Ice sheet in our city to share amongst these 43 teams. Could you imagine if Baseball, Soccer, Football or Lacrosse all had access to just one field? What about basketball or volleyball having to share just one court? Those associations would surely not accept those conditions, so why should hockey? Youth Hockey Is Big In Rosemount Last season there were around 155 Youth Hockey Associations in the State of Minnesota. 22 of those associations had 500+ skaters and Rosemount ranked 16th overall with 568. All 15 associations in front of us and 6 behind us have access to at least two full size ice sheets within their city limits. This simply means that Rosemount is the ONLY association in the State with over 500 skaters with access to just one full size ice sheet. Furthermore, there were 11 more associations with 400+ skaters ranking 23rd to 34th and all but two of those associations have access to at least two sheets. Continues on Page 3 Page 2
Continued from page 2 A message from the Board It s Hockey Season Work Continues Slowly. We have been working with the City of Rosemount for a couple of years now and there has been some progress, but that progress has been slow. The Time is NOW as something has to be done...and done FAST! Enough traveling to Hastings, Inver Grove, St Paul and Lakeville to get in our practice time. Enough of our boys and girls skating until 10:15pm on school nights. Enough of our High School skaters getting up at 4:30am just so they can practice before school. IP Parents, What this means for you. For the IP Parents who are still reading this... this problem will get passed down to you once your skater enters the traveling level. We encourage you to start getting involved with the support efforts now. Young families are moving into our city and the problem is only going to get worse. We can t imagine what it will be like in five years if we are still in the same predicament that we are now. What Can You Do? Please contact Mayor Bill Droste and your city council members to let them know you are less than pleased with the current situation and it s time to help us build a second full size ice sheet. You can reach the mayor and council members by sending a single to Citycouncil@ci.rosemount.mn.us or visit the city website at and click on Government and then City Council, to reach each of them individually. 11 Trophy Case The virtual RAHA Trophy case has been officially opened. The Trophy Case can be found under the News tab on the website homepage. Congratulations to ALL of our early winners. Watch future newsletters and the RAHA website for updates as the hardware rolls in. 1st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place Consolation CHAMPIONS Bantam AA - North American Hockey League Tournament Bantam B1 Fairbault Tournament 15UA Girls - Hopkins Thanksgiving Tournament Second Place Bantam C - Wayzata Sniper Classic 12UA - Eden Prairie Third Place Consolation Champion The 12UA Girls would travel to Eden Prairie for their first tournament of the season and come back with 2nd Place. It was ALL IRISH in Pool Play at they would earn the #1 pool seed with wins over Eden Prairie, won 5-0, Buffalo 15-0 and Woodbury 8-1. A more even match-up against Chaska-Chan in the semi-finals was a great game with the Irish coming back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 and earn a trip to the Chip. Andover would be the Title Game opponent and the girls just couldn t match their speed and skill falling 7-0. Great Start to your Tournament Season Ladies and good luck down the road. Your teams stories and pictures wanted! Submit your tournament victories and team news to Chris Kalata. Page 11
Trophy Case Don t be fooled by the jerseys, but congratulations to the Rosemount/Hastings/Farmington co-op 15UA team for winning the 40th annual Hopkins Thanksgiving Tournament. The girls won 2-1 over Chaska/Chanhassen, 6-2 over Northern Lakes and ended with a 4-2 win over Minnetonka in the championship game. The girls from Rosemount are Olivia Garrity, Carly Bohl, Larissa Hafley, Claire Dupuis, Grace Norris and Ashley Tuttle. Great job girls. Our Bantam C boys make it 1 for 1 in hardware taking 2nd Place at the Wayzata Sniper Classic. The Irish would sting the Hornets of Edina 2-1 to open pool play and follow that up with a 2-0 shut-out of OMG. A 5-1 loss to Wayzata put Rosemount in a must win Pool Play finale against Minnetonka. A 5-2 hard fought victory validated a spot in the Championship game, but it would be a rematch with Tonka. This time around Tonka would get their revenge topping our boys 3-1. Congrats to all the players and coaches on a Great Tourney! Congrats to our Bantam AA Boys for validating Minnesota as the State of Hockey with a perfect 6-0 run to win the North American Hockey Leagues Future Prospect Tournament at the Schwans Super Rink in Blaine. The Irish took down Sioux Falls 5-2, California Tigers 7-1, Omaha 3-1 and the Rocky Mountain Rough Riders 8-0 to earn the #1 overall seed and trip to the semi-finals. Sioux Falls was looking for some revenge, but once again the Irish would hold serve and prevail 5-3. That setup a championship game with Dallas Texas and another chance to put a needle in Norm Green's back, and the boys would do just that with a 4-0 shutout. Congrats to all on a great tournament. The Bantam AA squad are off and running to a start to this early season. Good Luck in your preparation for District 8 play. Page 12
Trophy Case Congrats to our Bantam B1 Boys for winning the Faribault Tournament. The Irish defeated KC Mavericks 8-0, Rochester 7-0 and Faribault 6-0 to earn the Championship game on Sunday. The KC Mavs were looking for some revenge, but once again the Irish would prevail and win the Championship game 7-3. The Bantam B1 squad are off to a great start and remain undefeated with a record. Congrats to the players, coaches and parents on a great season and good luck with the upcoming Best of the Rest Eden Prairie tournament. Go Irish! 14 Hot Player of the Week Andrew Murphy - Peewee B2 Green If you haven't heard the term BRICK WALL before, it is reference to a goalie who doesn't often let the puck hit the back of the mesh. Our first RAHA Hot player of the season was a Brick Wall over a 3 day weekend in early November. Andrew Murphy of the Peewee B2 Green squad would get his first shutout of the season in a 6-0 win over Chaska-Chan on Friday night. Murph wasn't done there as he came back Saturday morning to blank the Minneapolis Storm 8-0 and then complete the tri-fecta in a stellar performance against Prior Lake 3-0. Nine Periods of shutout hockey for the Murph Man stopping all 36 shots that came his way. Andrew credits his excellent defensive crew and host of great back-checking forwards in helping him over this great three day stretch. Congrats to Murph and the Peewee B2 Green and good luck as you continue to prepare for D8 play. Page 14
Hot Player of the Week Mason Wheeler - Bantam AA The spotlight hits our Bantam AA squad and Mr. Mason Wheeler as this week s RAHA Hot Player. Mason and his team-mates recently participated in the prestigious 16 team Battle for the Blue Ox tournament where they would open against Top 10 foe Eden Prairie. Mason would bring the Irish back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits and when Mitch Kohner tied it up 4-4 to force OT It was once again Wheeler Time. Mason would win it for the Irish 5-4 earning his first Bantam Hat Trick. He would go on to add 2 more goals and an assist in the tournament for a 6 point weekend. Page 15
