1 1 4-H Newsflash Aurora, Buffalo, Jerauld & Sanborn Counties Audra Scheel SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor Oct. & Nov Inside this issue: District Calendar 2 Event Notices 3 Aurora News 4 Jerauld Buffalo News 5 Sanborn News What is a project medal? 4-H member/club goals 4-H leader goals Aurora County Extension Office PO Box 397 Plankinton, SD (605) aurora.county@sdstate.edu From my desk to yours: Jerauld County Extension Office PO Box 366 Wessington Springs, SD (605) jerauld.county@sdstate.edu Lets Set Some Goals! Sanborn County Extension Office PO Box 397 Woonsocket, SD (605) sanborn.county@sdstate.edu Why do we set goals? Research studies have shown a direct link between goals and enhanced performance. Earl Nightingale put it this way, "People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It's as simple as that." If you don t have a goal in life, you are spending your life running around and not achieving anything for yourself. You get the illusion that you are doing a lot of things, but they aren t what you want. You are just busy fulfilling everyone s goals. It can be the fast food industry enjoying your patronage because you re lovin it, multi-billion dollar consumer goods companies securing your purchase because they convinced you that their haircare products with 76% frizz reduction is something you need, fashion houses getting you to buy their clothes because it makes you look cool, or you working in a job you don t love because it is safe, secure and makes a living. How are you supposed to ascertain what you want if you don t even set concrete goals? How are you supposed to achieve your dreams and visions if you don t clearly spell out the end output, your desire? Setting your goals gives you clarity on what you ultimately want. It makes you configure and articulate the desires floating in your mind. It ensures that you are channeling your time, energy and efforts into things that really matter to you. It makes you live more consciously. Your November assignment: Have each 4-H member fill out the goal setting pdf attached and submit to the club leaders. Leaders you fill out your goal sheet and submit at the next leader meeting. In order to move as a team and mentor those around us we have to communicate effectively to achieve goals. Your goal setting activity can easily be encompassed into your next club meeting. After the exercise you can direct youth to page 2 in their record books to record their personal and club goals. Your goals are due no later than Jan. 1! True Impact = Results Lets take 4-H to the next level and show our communities how valuable of an organization we truly are! 7 7 What is a Project Medal? So what is a project medal you ask It is a medal youth can apply for in their 3rd year of 4-H. Medals promote project achievement and allow youth to learn about a specific project area through exhibits, judging, and demonstrations/talks. So start thinking about the project you have done and those that you are interested in doing. This is why we encourage you to give talks that relate to the project you are learning about and share that knowledge with others at club or county events. There are project medals available in over 50 areas and many ways to exhibit in those areas. Project medal requirements Enrolled 3 years in 4-H Enrolled at least 2 years in project and enrolled the year youth applies for medal. Gave 1 county public presentation or 2 club demonstrations or talks in project area. Show project accomplishment the current year by exhibiting. Completed record book. Participated at judging if available for that project area. Example of my 4-H friend Ally Ally loves the beef project area and this is her 3rd year in 4-H. Last year Ally bought a heifer and exhibited the heifer at Achievement Days and State Fair. Ally learned a lot about the beef project; she even gave her 4-H talk about Rotational Grazing and shared with her fellow 4-H members how this relates to the beef project. Ally has selected her show heifer for this year and will chose another beef related topic to share at a 4-H club meeting. Ally has also attended livestock judging events and has learned what to look for when selecting a beef animal. When Ally turns in her record book in the fall of 2019, she will fill out a project medal application. The project medals are then awarded to youth during recognition events. Project Achievement Youth need to be able to access any materials and resources needed to fully explore the project. SDSU Extension promotes the 4-H mission through research and facilitating mentorship from industry leaders and volunteers. If we don t know the answer we will work with you to find someone who does! Leader and parents encourage your 4-H youth to work towards a project medal when planning your 4-H year.

8 8 My 4-H year goal Goal: (Specific, Measurable, Authentic, Realistic, Timely, & Inspiring) It is important I achieve this goal because: Steps I need to take to achieve my goal: * * * The skills and knowledge I need to be successful: How I will know when I have achieved success: The quote that inspires me to stay motivated: My 4-H club s Goals

9 9 Your Goals as a 4-H Leader Goals for our 4-H Program in county Needs or wants for our Program? I believe that success is within reach of just about everyone. But I also believe that personal success without leadership ability brings only limited effectiveness. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership-John C. Maxwell
