SDSU Cooperative Extension is proud to offer you new resources for fun and interactive learning about horses. This project is for member's 8 18 years old and is designed for members to gain experience and skills pertaining to the horse project. What can you do in this project? Lots of things such as learning horse behavior, parts of a horse, different breeds, selection, grooming, horsemanship, safety, horse careers and much more! On the first of every month there will be posted on the website below the following items for your benefit: 1. A brief article containing relevant and current information about horse care. 2. Educational videos about how to care for a horse, and how to succeed in the show ring. 3. A monthly challenge for youth in the 4-H horse project. New Youth Horse Training Program for South Dakota 4-H ers! SDSU Extension and the South Dakota 4-H Program have designed a new Youth Horse Training program to replace the former Horse Safety Training. Youth Horse Ownership Responsibility Safety and Education Training, is the NEW curriculum that was developed to assist South Dakota 4-H Youth Program Advisors and project leaders in teaching youth about proper horse management and safety. At the training day the youth will be required to perform two safety activities listed on the Horse Activity Record. Youth will also be required to complete a Youth in Action Event or Talk/Demonstration pertaining to the horse project. Examples of Youth in Action: Horse Judging or Hippology; attending the South Dakota Horse Fair in Sioux Falls on March 17 would count as a Youth in Action event. We would just need proof you participated. If the youth wants to give a talk/demonstration on the day of the training in the county they will be able to do so or they have the option to give the talk/demonstration at a 4-H club meeting. Training and youth in action must be completed by June 1 and turned into the office or you will not be eligible to show your horse at any 4-H level. The Horse Activity Record is attached with the newsletter if you want to look at it before training day. We are very excited about the potential benefits from these changes. We are looking forward to working with you and offering outstanding educational opportunities for 4-H youth. Reminder: Ownership Deadline for Market Beef is April 1! Please bring a copy of your registration papers (if you are showing a Breed steer) to county weigh-ins. A parent is encouraged to come with your child so you can sign the forms the day of weigh-in. Please feel free to call the county offices if you have any questions; that is what we are here for!
