1 1 4-H Newsflash Aurora, Buffalo, Jerauld & Sanborn Counties Aurora County Extension Office PO Box 397 Plankinton, SD (605) Jerauld County Extension Office PO Box 366 Wessington Springs, SD (605) Sanborn County Extension Office PO Box 397 Woonsocket, SD (605) Audra Scheel SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor June 2017 From my desk to yours: NEW Companion Animal Project Area Added for 2017 Expanding animal science opportunities for youth, South Dakota 4-H introduces a new companion animal project area for members. The companion animal project area is open to any pet which relies on humans for its care. Youth can exhibit turtles, ferrets, beta fish, snakes, hedgehogs, hamsters - you name it. "This project makes animal science accessible to 4-H members who do not have access to land for livestock or a cat, dog, poultry or rabbit - it really opens up animal science opportunities to all members," Skadsen said, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Minnehaha County. Inside this issue: Tagging Requirements State Fair Book Top Chef Contest Fashion Transformation Poultry Requirements Service Project RASDAK Youth Pork Quality Rocket Workshop Aurora Co. News District Calendar Sanborn Co. News Jerauld-Buffalo Co. News Unique to other 4-H animal project areas, pets exhibited within the new companion animal project area are judged on their health, wellbeing and environment provided to them, versus specific breed standards. Members are judged on their overall knowledge of the animal and how to care for it. "This project area provides a framework which helps youth develop public speaking and showmanship skills. If they are passionate about their pet, this project area gives them a venue to share knowledge and information," Skadsen said. "This provides an opportunity for 4-Hers to exhibit and learn about animals not currently covered by other project areas," explained Skadsen. Last year this project area was piloted in Sanborn County. There were several different animals including a parakeet, prairie dog and hermit crabs. We are excited to offer the project in all counties across the state this year. Pets exhibited in the companion animal project area will not be housed on the fairgrounds, but instead will arrive at schedule times specific to each achievement days. Members are free to take them home following showmanship. In some cases, youth may decide not to bring their pet with them and may instead opt to bring a poster board presentation.

Open Beef Show - Parker, SD Aug ~ Brown County Fair - Aberdeen, SD Aug ~ Central States Fair Rapid City, SD Check out the website for entry forms! 4-H Market Sheep Division Updates The 4-H Market Sheep division at the South Dakota State Fair has a new look. Instead of only three lots (white-faced meattype, black-/speckled-face meat-type, and wool-type), the show has been expanded to include breeds and crossbred classifications. Since it is impractical to require registration papers for these lambs, a classifying system has been adopted to sort lambs into lots. Lamb Classification All lambs will be classified during check-in at the State Fair, but for reasons pertaining to entry and youth development, families and youth are asked to self-classify their lambs on the Ownership Verification Affidavit. Exhibitors may show more than 2 Crossbred lambs, if they are classified differently than they are entered. Example: an exhibitor enters what he believes are 1 Hampshire, 2 Speckle-face, and 2 Crossbred lambs. The classifiers determine he has 3 Speckle-face lambs. One of those that classified Speckle-face may be shown in the Crossbred division along with the 2 other Crossbred lambs. For more the full article go to Youth Pork Quality Assurance Training May 30 Youth who plan to exhibit swine at the 2017 SD State Fair must be trained in PQA. A training will be held May 30th at 6PM at the Jerauld Co. Ag Building.
