Oct., 2014 Inside this issue: Calendar Aurora County 4 Jerauld Buffalo 5 From my desk to yours: 2014 State Fair in Review! Congrats to all of our 4-Hers and their success at the 2014 SD State Fair. Thank you to all of our leaders and volunteers who give time to the 4-H program throughout the year and especially during the fair season. Without you Achievement Days and the SD State Fair would not be possible! Kids tell your parents and grandparents THANK YOU! All your exhibits are in the Extension offices, please stop in and pick these up at your earliest convenience if you haven t already. Make sure you tell Sherryl, Tina and Julie thanks for hauling all your exhibits! Did you win something at the State Fair? Make sure you get your thank you notes sent to those sponsors! It s that time of year and record books are due. Please start working on them now and don t wait until the last minute. Your record book should reflect what you ve learned this year and any accomplishments in your project areas. You may ask why do I have to do this? We do record books to teach the life skill of book keeping. Things to be included: Record Book Cover (available at the Extension Office), Annual Report/Exhibit Record, Accumulative Records, Livestock Financial Sheets, 4-H story, photos, newspaper clippings. These are all placed in front of the previous years records. Your record book is meant to be a simple book containing records and support material for your yearly project work. It is not meant to be a scrapbook. What should you tell about in your 4-H story? I want to read about the favorite things you did in 4-H. Tell me what you learned how to do. What was your favorite project, and what is a new project you want to try next year. What was the hardest lesson you learned? Who helped you the most this year? What community service project did you help with? What was the best 4-H activity? These are just a few of the questions you can answer in your 4-H story:) I can t wait to read each one of them! 3 P a ge 3 State Fair 4-H T-Shirts Thank You The exhibitor t-shirts at the State Fair were donated by Farm Credit Services. A thank you can be sent to Farm Credit Services, PO Box 1317, Huron, SD, Selecting your beef project It s that time of year again as local club calf sales steam up, or maybe you are weaning your own calves from their mothers. Now is the time to evaluate individuals before they enter your show barn. A calf along side its mother in the pasture is a measurable reflection of what it will look like in 11 months. Just a few things to consider as we get into selection: 1. Structure, structure, structure. A calf that is cow hocked or sickle hocked or bow-legged is not going to get any better as they gain weight. 2. Rib shape. Natural, soft rib shape is typically one that feeds easier and carries more natural width and dimension. Feeding rib shape is not recommended. 3. Parentage. Has the dam ever raised a good one in the past or is she a one hit wonder? 4. Registration papers? 5. Shop with an end date in mind. What is a January born steer going to weigh at state fair next Sept? Consider frame size. 6. Don t let hair and fat condition influence your decision. They might be pretty now, but analyze what s underneath. 7. Green calves that are lacking condition are a gamble, but sometimes they pay off! Always choose a calf with good lines, balance and natural muscle definition. 8. Disposition. Does the calf run and hid behind its mother, bounce off the panels as it enters the corrals? Quiet calf = safer project! 9. Decide your budget before you bid. 10. Have Fun with your selection! Fall Prospect Calf Shows Springs Showdown Wessington Springs, SD Nov. 1 Hand Co.
