1 4-H News Flash Aurora, Buffalo, Jerauld, & Sanborn Counties October, 2012 Aurora County Extension Office PO Box 397 Plankinton, SD (605) Jerauld County Extension Office PO Box 366 Wessington Springs, SD (605) Sanborn County Extension Office PO Box 397 Woonsocket, SD (605) From my desk to yours Audra Scheel, 4-H Program Advisor, Look not mournfully into the past, it comes not back again. Wisely improve the present, it is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow So how did your 4-H year go? You need to evaluate what you liked and didn t like in order to set your goals for next year. Hopefully your records books helped you think about some short term goals. It is always good to write these goals down and make them visible in your home, car, locker, etc.; somewhere you will see them every day. Goals are for your development as a person. Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T! Take the time to fill out your goals for 4-H in the coming year. 1. Specific. What will the goal accomplish? How and why will it be accomplished? 2. Measurable. How will you measure whether or not the goal has been reached (list at least two indicators)? 3. Achievable. Is it possible? Have others done it successfully? Do you have the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and resources to accomplish the goal? Will meeting the goal challenge you without defeating you? 4. Results-focused. What is the reason, purpose, or benefit of accomplishing the goal? What is the result (not activities leading up to the result) of the goal? 5. Time-bound. What is the established completion date and does that completion date create a practical sense of urgency? Looking ahead.4-h online is a system that will be put into use extensively by SDSU Extension this year. Each family will have a password and use their address as a login name. This will give each member a more user friendly approach when it comes to signing up for projects and events. We are making plans to meet with 4-H clubs across the four county area to assist with this transition. Change is a good thing and we are going to work with each family as we transition from paper system to online. We are all learning together and trying to make this process as simple as possible. And remember if you have questions call your county office or contact me; we are here to help! Together we can make this a great year.

7 October, 2012 Page 7 1. What is 4-H Online? It is an online program that allows the families to make sure their information is true and correct. Families will be responsible for entering such events as Achievement Days and State Fair. Each family will have their own account where their children will enroll and record their projects. 2. Why does this help your county office? We are taking the data entry and putting it in your responsible and capable hands. All of the office secretaries work a part time schedule; if the family enters their own projects there will be fewer mistakes and we can provide more and better programming. 3. What is the office secretary and 4-H Advisor s job then? We will monitor and approve member records and registrations while continuing to bring fun educational 4-H events to the county. We will be able to see any and all changes you make to your account and all registrations will have to be approved in our office before going to the state level. 4. Will communication with the county extension office be better? Yes! Counties will have a quick way to communicate to all of their families through the 4HOnline calendar as well as uploading newsletters and announcements to 4HOnline. 5. What if we don t have internet access? We realize there will be some families that don t have a home computer or access. We will work with you to ensure that your children are enrolled and have every opportunity to enjoy 4-H!
