News Volunteers wanted! What makes a good demo? Sanborn Co. News Jerauld-Buffalo Co. News SDSU Extension s 4-H Youth Development Program supports a tremendous project area called Shooting Sports. There are many disciplines to try, and there are opportunities for competitions and national trips as you progress through the program. Youth that are eight years old as of January 1st can be active members in 4-H and can start in the Shooting Sports program. The best thing about 4-H Shooting Sports is that safety is of primary focus. From the first meeting, all participants are consistently reminded that safety is the number one objective. Safety not only includes personal safety and proper handling of equipment, but youth are partnered with caring adults experienced with eight hours of training in a chosen discipline as well as four hours of youth development training. 4-H Shooting Sports is available in Jerauld and Sanborn Counties; youth can participate in many disciplines including: BB gun, Air Pistol, Air Rifle, and Archery. Must complete safety training prior and be registered in 4honline.com before first night of practice. If you are interested in becoming an instructor please contact one of the volunteers below or the Extension office. Shooting sports will start in Jan. and run through April. Youth work towards qualifying for the state shoot at the end of April. 4 4 4-H Newsflash National 4-H Conference, April 7 12, Chevy Chase, Maryland Members of the South Dakota 4-H Program, have the opportunity to apply for National 4-H Conference scheduled for April 7 12, 2018, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Youth must be years old by the date of the event to apply. The National 4-H Conference is a premier professional and leadership development event for 4-H members, ages 16 19, across the U.S. and its territories. The conference is administered by the National 4-H Head-quarters of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Held annually, except for several years during World War II, the camp s mission is to assist in the development of the next generation s leaders. Delegates attend training workshops, become acquainted with government and have the opportunity to meet with state leaders. Visit the National 4-H Conference web-site for more information! The National 4-H Conference trip is sponsored and fully funded by the South Dakota 4-H Livestock Industry Trust Fund. To apply, applicants should submit their applications to their local 4-H Youth Program Advisor. Upon approval, the 4-H Youth Program Advisor will submit the signed application, via or USPS mail, to the State 4-H Office by January 1, A designated committee of 4-H Youth Development professionals and/or previous trip participants will review applications and notify youth who are selected to attend National 4-H Conference as a delegate. For more information and the application materials, view Youth for the Quality Care of Animals Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a national multi-species quality assurance program for youth ages 8-21 with a focus on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-being, and character development. The YQCA program is an annual certification created for youth producing and or showing beef, dairy, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits. The program has been designed by Extension specialists and national livestock program managers to ensure it is accurate, current and relevant to the needs of the animal industry and show, and is appropriate for youth learning levels. South Dakota 4-H believes that the YQCA program provides a great opportunity for our youth who are participating in food producing animal projects. For the first year (2018), SD 4-H will require YQCA for youth participating in swine projects exhibiting at county or state fair. Audra Scheel will be a trainer for the YQCA program and will lead in person trainings. For (2019) all youth participating with food producing animal projects will be required to be certified. The registration fee for instructor led trainings will be $3 per person and the online fee will be $12 per person. For more information on the YQCA program please contact Audra Scheel. Youth exhibiting at the National Western will need to be YQCA certified for 2018.

I hear time and time again from teachers that they can tell if a youth is a 4-H member when they get up in front of a classroom to speak. As a horribly shy child this was a fear that I had to overcome time and time again. But overcome it I did, with lots of practice. I am able to speak in front of a crowd of people because of what 4-H instilled in me as a child. For your first talk, pick something you know a lot about or are comfortable talking about. Some of the other things your child will develop for life skills through public speaking include: How to find and research a subject and supplies with initiative and motivation How to plan and organize information and thoughts in a logical manner How to prepare original visuals and use them to support what you say How to express yourself clearly, convincingly and creatively How to teach and show others what you have learned How to select an appropriate delivery method and use appropriate delivery techniques How to listen to the opinions of others and accept feedback How to manage your time How to manage stress 4-H Public Presentation Guide
